Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me Lyrics
Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain came pourin' down
Me and Billy standin' there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishin' rod
We just stood there gettin' wet
With our backs against the fence
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it don't rain all day
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me
Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettin' dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me
On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said Hey! There you are
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream
Yeah, it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me
Yeah, it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me

I think I can confirm that Van must have "toked up" then wrote this song eh?
I first heard this song when
Reminds me of when i was a kid. I used to go down to the lake near where i lived with my best friend and we would fish and had hamburger we wrapped around sticks to grill over a fire. We had an island we had to cross a 100 foot rock walkway to get to full of birch and poplars that we had fires on, right next to the water with the trees hanging out over the lake. We had corn cob pipes my friends older brother would buy for us since we were just kids and cherry pipe tobacco. My friend caught a 5 pound rainbow trout once and we grilled it up. We also brought a canoe with us quite often, portaging it on our backs and paddling every foot of that glorious lake all summer long. For some reason one time we decided to climb the biggest oak right in the center of this small island and my friend fell, breaking his arm. Great times! Went right back out next day with a cast on! This song was those times. Loved those times in the early seventies and this song!
Whiskey = Water of Life (Literally) This beautiful story is about growing up and the experiences that leave an impression as we grow and learn, and boys become men. Life as it was in a more innocent time, and a better place. Before we all became so jaded. Lots to be learned from this one. It can make us better people if we let it.
Let's take a trip down memory lane
Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light?
The song is about him and his best friend and the bottle
My uncle introduce me to vans music 36 ago still playing it today to my grandson's

love Van the Man...
mwah x
Wow. He's touring. I would love to see him again. Been over 20 yrs ago, at a very small place--the Berkeley High School auditorium!! Wish I could fly out to Nevada.
SOME MUSIC BURNS A PERMANENT SPOT IN YOUR HEART,...WHETHER YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT.
This is a good song about fishing and having a good memory.Going fishing with one of your buddies is a perfect natural high. Having lifetime best friends that are there to the end makes it all worthwhile. Van the man wrote this about a day when he was a kid and had and went fishing with his buddy and met some cool people. I’d love to have a few drinks with this guy. One of the all time greats. I’m a millennial and I recognize this man’s influence

Sounds a little fast.
You left this world last night Dad. I just want you to know that I love you with all my heart and everything will be okay! You are in Gods hands now! Please say hello to Grandpa and Grandma for me. Let your beautiful energy be restored and come back when you are ready because someone will truly need you as your sons and daughters definitely did. Love you Dad, goodbye for now.
I am sorry for your loss.
It cuts so deep.
I know.
Blessed are those, who have passed.
So sorry.
Chris Helms thank you 🙏🏻

Over the years when I listen to this song it puts pictures in my mind, it is like watching a great short film, I have often changed my mind about what the song is about, I put my own story to the words, that is the beauty of Van songs, He will not tell you what it is about, like me Van may also change the meaning of his songs as time goes by.
Like poetry. Van your gifted.
Hell Yeah Van. I love this song
Last time i danced with my mother was watching Van sing this live at a gig on an old TV station.
My mum even at 70 could bloody dance. Miss you mum xx
It reminds me of the musicality of THE BAND !...Who came first ?...It is a stupid question...forget it !
Nothing is a stupid question when it comes to music don’t doubt yourself

Mullet. Mustache. Gold necklace. Do you. Go Gerrit Cole. Astros.
Pooped my pants and then this came on. I was 18 and all I could do was the boogie woogie. Song was so good I didn't care about the smell and the shit all on my butt and balls and taint. Great song.
People who give this beautiful song thumbs down you have no spirit also no taste
Mam o Man what would to be like to able to sing and write songs like my Celtic 1st cousin, Me I would give my old battered leather boots, socks with holes in the toes, my battered old hat, my ripped shirt, my torn and ragged trousers, the last 7 old pennies I have in my pocket and my old horse and this is all that I have got. I hope and pray that my offer will be accepted by the Lord above and I gain a little bit of the skills of this mighty master man.
Makes me cry every time. Youth. Freedom. Friendship. Gone with the wind. Apologies Miss Mitchell.
GB GB and get a grip
Soulful, pure tone and so so heartfelt music, those were the days
This song saved my life. I woke up one morning and this song was playing and honestly I didn't know where I was or how I got there. From that day to this I knew I never wanted to feel like that again.
A friend of mine and I had this whole experience hitchhiking to northern Ontario some 35 years ago. It was clear and pure and sun-warmed. Such a wonderful memory, and such a beautiful, perfect song.
Stoned just listening to this. No weed.

Sweet Blindness (1968) by Laura Nyro. Also her Stoned Soul Picnic (1968). Fantastic tracks.
Every single word that my dear Celtic cousin Van the Man Morrison every write, spoke and sang are out there for everyone else to use but only very few people amung the billions of people on this earth have received God blessings and the gift of using words in a very special and most meaningful way, Phil Lynott was very similar with his songs, he told stories of happening dating back thousands of years, he wrote about the present and the future. How lucky are we to have the likes of Bob Dylan, John Forgery, Bruce Springsteen, Ricky Warwick and similar people around, Bob Dylan will be looked on in the future as the Shakespear of music. Van Morrison should also be classed as a healer because of the stunning brilliant music that he has made all during his recording like
No one else has a voice like Van Morrison !
Makes me sad.... I can't even go outside in the rain and let it wash all over me... We live in a fckin evil world... Have mercy on the souls of these sick people, Father... They can only kill me once... where is that gallon jar, van.... Give me a drink... I thirst.

The song and production is outstanding!! Fucking love this!!
This always makes me think of going fishing and just generally hiking around with Ricky F. when we were about fourteen. I always loved you Ricky. You always made my faggy little tummy flutter. x
Is Van the Man, a better story teller than a singer? Discuss. Loved him since Domino.

Holy crap, 420 dislikes at this point :') obviously those 420 people have never been stoned!
Mikah John I would hope
How can there be any "thumbs down" it must be some kind of sick joke? I am so much into THE greatest blues-soul artist known as Van Morrison that I intend to have his music played for 2-3 hours at my funeral service for all to enjoy!!! I guess most of us appreciate his endless talent!
I'm with you. Love Van,what a entertainer! Into the mystic & brown eye girl are my all time favorites!
This song will forever live as a reminder of pine tree forests, blue waters and times of innocence with a sublime beauty in my memory.
In 72 I started spending summers with my sister and her boyfriend. He was a very big coke dealer. They'd blindfold me to go to other dealers houses! They all had this album and the best systems money could buy! We spent full days counting money! We got high for 3 - 5 days straight, then sleep. I was familiar with cocaine psychosis long before it was a thing! I was 12, already 5'9" and with long blonde hair and a body, so I really don't think anyone realized the impression they had. I hear this music and I am right back there. (I wanna look behind the dresser for a stack of money or lg. Ziplock!)
Um....right on I guess! Lol good story though
Polly Dennis good god how old are you
Met my wife in pub 35 years ago this was on the jukebox, we looked at each other fell in love and still are.
Michael Richards that’s beautiful man, best wishes for you guys !
If you connected over this song, I'd say that's a deep connection. Peace.
The man from Belfast, like my wife and my family origins. He played in my hometown Killyleagh County Down, Ireland in 1995 and 96. A month later I met my wife, that stoned me to my soul
Is she your "Brown eyed girl"? Or are you 2 on the same "Wavelength"? Or do you 2 "Let it all hang out"? Or do you 2 play "Domino's", or do you 2 ask each other,"Have I told you lately, that I love you"? Or, do you 2 ever have a "Wild Night"? Just asking, glad you 2 found each other, and make it work! It's a great thing, finding that someone that does it for ya!
Lots of ups and downs like anyone, yes she’s my brown eyed girl, we’ve both brown eyes as is our daughter! I’ve been given my dad’s vynil collection as he’s upgrading to cds, I’ve wavelength, St Dominic’s Preview and a Period of Transition amongst my dusty treasures, all I need to do is purchase some needles! Wavelength was the first Van Morrison album I remember listening to as a child. There’s something precious about reliving that memory, especially holding it in your hand ! Peace all ☮️
Superbe
This song used to be played a lot! Just abt everyone I knew got high back then!!! Great song! I still listen to it once in while.........

like a jelly roll?
Jelly Roll is the nickname of a famous jazz musician he's referencing. I was confused for years too before a friend explained to me
@kuwinsitall TY !♡ I grew up, being lucky enough to see/hear many musical stars of the 60's / 70's, but this man, was sooooo impressive on his Tupelo Honey Tour, it was unforgetable, & a rhythmic-heaven he shared from inside himself, to us all. I was 15. What an incredible treat.
Jazz pianist, Jelly Roll Morton.
Lol. My first thought was jelly roll doughnut after getting the munchies.. 🍩
@Z1000Jeff "jelly roll" has other meanings as well: http://onlineslangdictionary.com/meaning-definition-of/jelly-roll

Memories... beyond belief
A hidden gem
There's absolutely nothing about this tune that can be considered hidden. Everyone knows it.
'Ooooh the water'....heaven
I don't really know why I like this song, but I do. Maybe I just like good music ?
LEONIDAS bottom line is that when an artist pours themselves heart and soul into their craft, and it speaks to that part of you waiting to be reached. Then the music steps into the realm of timelessness. That's what you can't put your finger on. Lol, same with me when I get blindsided by it.
M E -- Excellent hypothesis.
I would say because it is a well crafted song to be quirky, and aesthetically in a rarely achieved sweet spot ... and our "ear" ( musical aptitude ) recognizes and experiences, and gets thrilled by, it.
When I listen to songs like this, I'm just totally humbled and I never fill up listening to them.
( I'm competing with ME for best hypothesis, if you haven't clucked your tongue ( 😠 tsk !.. ) in disapproval already ... )
I like the story . It makes me (almost) remember when it was possible to feel like that.......
I love this song..thanks dad for making me listen to them now I live many old songs..❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love***
Sooo hope my 7 year old daughter feels the same way when she's grown
