Van Etten, Sharon - Don't Do It Lyrics

Said you need to do it 'cause you can't feel it tonight
Well you can if you want to
Want to take you outside, want to show you the sky
To remind you why you shouldn't.
Do your worst if you can, do your worst if you can do it.
You can if you want. You can take it -- yeah, you want to run.
Said you wanted to then kissed the gun.
You can if you want to do it.
And you want to do it, and you want to do it
If you want to do it, you are going to do it,
even if I don't want you to.
Say it outright that you don't want to see me tonight
and you won't if you don't want to
Hide it from me if you must hide it from me
if you don't trust anything I say right to you
And you want to do it, if you want to do it
You will if you want to
And you want to do it, if you want to do it,
You will if you want to.
And you want to do it, and you want to do it,
if you want to do it, you are going to do it,
even if I don't want you to.
I was inside painting your name on the window
I was somewhere in sight.
And I wanted to find out why you're hiding
I was tired of the fight.
Look me in the eyes say you can't do it,
look me in the eyes say you can't do it,
but you will if you want to.
Look me in the eyes say you can't do it,
look me in the eyes say you can't do it,
but you will if you want to.
And you want to do it, and you want to do it,
If you want to do it, you are going to do it,
even if I don't want you to.

Shake it down. So much better.
Tell me that you don't know what you do.

And you want to do it, if you want to do it
You will if you want to.
And you want to do it, if you want to do it
You will if you want to.
And you want to do it, if you want to do it
You will if you want to.

I wish I could make you right.

I listened to this song when it first came out in the fall of 2010 when I was depressed and alone my first time trying acid. God lol.

    T.... S....

Just about to turn 30 and freaking out.

    T.... S....

7 years later. 4 years away from the ex.

    T.... S....

Tara Suzanne I can relate. I had to walk away from someone who meant everything to me. For myself this song has a close, yet different meaning.

  7. c.... b....

you wrote a pivotal life changing song-----
    ....Thank You.

  8. B.... B....

reminds me of the melody from a coldplay song...

    Mükemmel keşif

    A.... S....

    kesinlikle

  13. M.... D....

i would change some things about this song (like the oversung main vocal line and it's crescendo use at the end)... but that didn't stop me from listening to it all day at work today.  Saw it at Glastonbury this year and downloaded it asap.

  14. M.... D....

hear a little Brandi Carlisle in there too, if this hasn't been mentioned.

  15. t.... ....

My favourite song, it means so much

  16. J.... S....

this song is simple and amazing. Can't stop listening.

  17. s.... ....

To beatfarmm.  Just seeing this now, and surely you have seen her live by now.  To those who haven't.  You will never experience and more friendly, responsive, and accessible band; and I've seen 'This bike is a pipe bomb', so that's saying something!  The Breeders may eclipse them, but only by a small margin (I hugged Kelly once, and Kim and I talked about fretboards for like 2 hours years ago) but mainly its because of their history.
Sharon is beyond description live, even on 'ill' nights.  If the songs in album form seem transportive, then you have no idea.  Live may send you into a coma.  I will say this till the end.  Seeing her live will stay with you forever, like watching Patti do 'Pissing in a river' or 'pale blue eyes'.  To me, there is no use in questioning, or wondering how you'll get there.  Hitchhike if you have to!  She is definitely worth seeing.

  18. F.... B....

About someone contemplating suicide. Please don't do it.

  19. J.... R....

"Envelop" for example, she made backgrounds for
Epic & Tramp.. great artist by herself.

  20. J.... R....

you can find her stuff on YouTube or Spotify.. ambient-artist.

  21. J.... R....

    Julianna Barwick.

  22. J.... R....

Probably the best song about suicide/depression ever.

  23. J.... R....

It's about suicide (self-destruction) definately, from a good friend's/sister's/parent's point of view, what she's saying "If you want to you will, but I don't want you to, but If you want to, it's your choice, even if I don't wan't you to." that's fcking beautiful.

  24. J.... R....

    *a similiar

  25. J.... R....

Lana is nothing compared to Sharon. They have similiar voice, but Sharon is a musician.

  26. J.... R....

    this song is about responsibility.

  27. S.... C....

*3 years later* Only 63 thousand views :\

  28. K.... ....

  29. S.... m....

IF YOU READ THIS hey sharon hey sharon hey thank you for following your heart and sharing your music.

  30. A.... A....

It carries a feeling of cold and dark, worry and anxiousness. Really hits hard.

  31. I.... J....

I saw her live recently and she was phenomenal. She deserves to be a lot more popular than she currently is.

  32. g.... ....

I agree, and I'm an atheist...

  33. g.... ....

wow, this is a great song...

  34. d.... ....

oh man. i saw her in concert and had no idea what i was in for as a live performance. she was freaking amazing. how much she put into her voice, emotion, passion.. i felt like i could feel my soul in my chest listening to her sing. truly the best performance i've ever been to. i'm not a spiritual person in the religious sense, but her voice and lyrics just made me feel like i was going to burst with this amazing feeling.

  35. m.... ....

haaa! I came here looking for a very really popular and mainstream song...that basically I think it says: just do it tonight...do it tonight...or some crap like that. her name came up, and this may sound absurd but her name sounds like those european techno djs, so i thought this would be the song.gladly I was wrong. she sounds good, sooo my type.

  36. T.... F....

she was so outstanding at sasquatch, IF ANY OF YOU GET TO SEE HER GET THOSE TICKETS, SHE IS SOO WORTH IT. trust me.

  37. m.... ....

So powerful, still gives me chills after 20+ listens. To me an uplifting track. Added as no 2 on my top 100 songs of 2010, over at my blog moviesandsongs365

  38. N.... ....

  45. N.... ....

this one i even better live :)

  46. P.... ....

Thank you Robin Pecknold for showing me this amazing artist!

  47. C.... O....

NELLY FURTADO, Sharon Van Etten and Aimee Mann all on the same ticket -- how freakin awesome would that be.

  48. f.... ....

She talked about this song's meaning in a recent interview:

"It is about suicide, it is about addiction. It's about people— Sorry, I'm still learning how to talk about it. When I first wrote it, it was more about specifically seeing somebody that— It initially started as me starting to see somebody—we didn't hang out very much—and trying to be cool about it, just being really simple and not seeing each other very much."

  49. d.... ....

Based on an interview, and listening to the lyrics, I think this song is about resolving internal conflict through music.
    I was somewhere inside
And I wanted to find out why you hurt
    And I was terrified
Dangerously close to the edge of a self-destructive act (maybe even suicide), Sharon chooses to release intense emotional feelings through her God given ability to write & sing beautiful songs.
She is probably a Gemini, like me. Carrying on a self-dialogue is not in the least unusual for us.

  50. B.... M....

is this about trying to stop someone from suiciding?

  51. d.... ....

    beautiful voice & acquiescent attitude

  52. p.... ....

    this song makes me spacy

  53. r.... ....

as Joyce Carol Oates would say its so beautiful it hurts it just touches my soul

  54. r.... ....

i heard this song on npr when i was half asleep and half awake wow this song is soooo gorgeous its so haunting

  55. T.... ....

Her voice is perfection and I absolutely love the dreamy angelic chorus in the background! Why haven't more people watched/commented?!

  56. i.... ....

    beautiful...

  57. g.... ....

should have more views and comments. great song.
