Ultravox - I Remember (Death In The Afternoon) Lyrics

We turned the dial, we heard the news and laughed, we don't know why
We drank the wine and spoke of times we knew of days gone by
We flicked through photographs we had, somehow they made us sad
Remembering the times we used to have, it made us cry

Oh I remember death in the afternoon

A silence fell about the room with harsh and heavy calm
The lovers and the friends all felt the same, it kept us warm
We raised our glass and drank to times we had, but'd see no more
The pictures of the past would haunt us still, and there remains

Oh I remember death in the afternoon

[Chorus x2]

I love how it builds to that crescendo of the piano and strings and the guitar emerges. They were my favourite band because they sounded different, marrying that almost classical element from Billy. Warren was always underrated as a drummer, but I realised as I grew up it was his driving and cerebral drums that gave another distinctive angle to Ultravox. Everyone played their part well and brought something to the whole - hence why it sounded bad when U-Vox came. I wished they'd patched things way sooner as it was way too late by the time of ... ahem ... 'Brilliant'.

  6. s.... 1....

Rage in Eden and Systems of Romance are my favourites.

    n.... m....

Great minds think alike my friend, midge is a very underrated guitarist, he isn't the fast wiz kid player, he's all feeling, great vibrato and melody. I got to meet him a few years back and wot a lovely, down to earth, modest, lovely human being.

  49. J.... W....

remembering the times we used to have

These lyrics had no meaning back in the day but 30 years later they resonate.

    S.... ....

Indeed, beautiful photo album. I really enjoyed it. This song started playing in my head out of the blue yesterday, so I had to go listen to it!

  61. M.... F....

This song is a pure Magic.

  62. m.... ....

The guitar track on this song is just awesome. The nuances, the flowing lines, the screams of agony. I don't know if he used an eBow on this or not, but it sure sounds like it with that kind of sustain. There's even a little bit of the solo with two parts. Fantastic work and great production.

  63. M.... ....

Ich bin gerade wieder 18 jahre alt geworden!?Danke dafür,gruss...

  64. 5.... ....

    Beautiful imagery...

  65. B.... S....

pewnie masz rację, nie znam angielskiego.... Słuchałeś z polskim tekstem EPITAFIUM grupy King Crimson? Zostało to usunięte, a tam był jedyny tekst. Zmieścił to NaFalachDunaju, ale usunięto... jakbyś miał ten tekst polski, to będę wdzięczny. Pozdrawiam z Płocka.

  66. S.... T....

  67. l.... ....

I always come back to this claasic Ultravox ...all the time .

  68. a.... ....

Haunting, beautiful music. The resolution reminiscent of Tubular Bells, albeit more grand. Well done

  72. d.... ....

    true timeless music.

  73. B.... S....

niesamowite!!! nie znam angielskiego, ale przetłumaczyłem sobie tytuł...

  74. P.... R....

@stinkycricket I will agree with you and say this is the ONE song I keep coming back to year after year. It is a work of art in the way it conveys its dark mood--timeless, heartfelt without being ridiculous, damn IMPORTANT in the way it moves, almost spider-like, through the solo until it reaches that HIGH point where the song explodes open. Real and true drama in a pop song. So hard to find. My #1.

  75. d.... ....

awesome new wave new romantics sound love it

  76. m.... ....

@stinkycricket Just read your comment mate and I really couldn't agree more .I'm a dyed in the wool rock fan so the "New Romantic " was ignored by myself ....the I heard this album ....it's beyond any trend or movement or label .This happens to be one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to ,absolutely awesome .

  77. s.... ....

This is the one, the SINGLE GREATEST TUNE EVER RECORDED!

I could go on and on about the many depths within this tune, the constant thummer bass (thummer, thummer, thummer), the exquisite drumming, the geeetar solo, the way it starts and ends with that little piano tinkle that's there throughout the tune and dies away at the end.

Brilliantly crafted tune, great lyrics, climax after climax and then an end that just drifts to . . .
This tune, is the GREATEST, thank you.

    s.... ....

Of course I agree, but I come to praise the crafting of your comment itself. Bravo and thanks! And my thanks to the original poster with some fine photographs! This posting has certainly attracted more discussion than the vast majority of the postings (mostly live) of this song. Very welcome discussion!

  78. l.... ....

Ahead of it's time even for the 80's and would make a great soundtrack to the end of a hollywood epic ....my all time fav Ultravox track

  79. j.... P....

Rage in Eden is a real classic, one that still sounds just as fresh as when it came out. It was great time for music in England with the electronica bands.

  80. R.... H....

We turned the dial, we heard the news and laughed!, we don't know why.

Gosh the beauty of trees, the photos are amazing and they really go well with the song 'Death in the Afternoon'. It is amazing how you always feel better when you sit near trees and today I am going to sit in the garden of the Mops and Brooms. and re-energise myself.

  89. k.... ....

    @LizardT couldn't agree more!

  90. S.... T....

This was last winter in Maine, USA. Most northeastern state...juts up into Canada a bit.
