U2 - Surrender Lyrics

Oh, the city's alight
With lovers and lies
Bright blue eyes
Oh, the city is bright
It's brighter than day tonight

Surrender, Surrender
Surrender, Surrender

Sadie said she couldn't work out
What it was all about
And so she let go
Now Sadie's on the street
And the people she meets you know
She tried to be a good girl and a good wife
Raise a good family
Lead a good life
It's not good enough
She got herself up on the 48th floor
Gotta find out
Find out what she's living for

Surrender, Surrender
Surrender, Surrender

Tonight...

Oh, the city's afire
A passionate flame
It knows me by name
Oh, the city's desire
To take me for more and more
It's in the street, getting under my feet
It's in the air, it's everywhere
My love for you
It's in the things I do and say
If I wanna live I gotta
Die to myself someday

Papa sing my sing my sing my song
Papa sing my sing my sing my song...

U2 Surrender Comments
  1. G.... D....

They sang they sang, they sang their song. No surrender in these lads, just striving for "Musical Supremecy" I'm sure of it they achieved this lofty goal. Bravo Bono et ses amis !

  2. A.... F....

Dad sing my sing my sing my sooooong!!!
Dad sing my sing my sing my sooooong!!!

  3. C.... ....

the first 3 U2 albums will always be the best.

  4. C.... M....

I saw them February 22nd 1982 at headliners in Madison Wisconsin. It was life-changing God what an experience that was as a Young Man

  5. K.... L....

    It's their best! WAR

  6. N.... G....

Remember hearing this song for the first time, early 80's, very late at night on an alternative music station. And being completely floored to learn that these guys were about my age - late teens. No way... 😲
(DJs at the time felt the band was just a one-off wonder. And wouldn't last. I remember thinking, you're wrong. Very wrong. Lol...)

  7. S.... ....

I was shocked to learn that this song was released in 1983, it just sounds too new to be from that time! I swear I thought it was from the mid 90s at the very least. Great song!

  8. F.... O....

    Canción final de álbum war..

  9. C.... T....

This is very very close to musical poetry, early U2 is sure very poetical

  10. c.... j....

Took me 53.5 yrs to die to myself..stubborn twit

  11. S.... S....

So many valid comments.. THIS was the period, no doubt..We were all a bit younger fer sure.....I remember listening to this BOY, OCTOBER and the Unforgettable Fire non stop on a Walkman daily in 84-85'...the Tree was on the doorstep but this was A period. They amazingly continue to make some great music after 35 yrs but you cant go back. I try and just appreciate what they STILL put out because its still the best in the bizz on any given day.

  12. I.... ....

Among many greats, this is their best album

  13. E.... A....

    October 2019

  14. J.... G....

Reminds me of 'I burn 4 u,' by The Police

  15. j.... b....

Once again I will say it, this was u2 at their best before bono became a complete and utter wanker.

  16. S.... R....

One of my all time favorites by the legendary U2. War is my favorite album by them. Every song on there is a masterpiece, and this is no exception.

  17. A.... P....

Edge on fire here, in the flow . . . epic U2, hypnotic, healing

  18. T.... F....

Surrender in French translation veux dire......
    Rends toi,abandonne,laisse tomber......
    Mais sois fier de toi........
    Proud to be.

  19. D.... C....

My favorite song on this album. I don't know if I ever heard it on the radio in the 80s.

  20. J.... W....

Love this song! Everyone in the band was at the top of their game! Edge has some guitar slides reminiscent of Jimmy Page. Kid Creole and the Coconuts deliver great background harmony and vocals! A+++++

  21. P.... A....

In 2018 "Sadie" entered the Top 20 of most given girl names in Ireland 🇮🇪 I call it a win for Bono!

Alternatively I discovered this song when I was 17 and instantly felt a deep connection with it, despite not being particularly religious. 'Two Hearts Beat as One" was another that struck a chord with me.

  22. l.... ....

I have no fucking idea the last time i heard this song shame on me.

  23. T.... F....

    @Justine bidulle
Voila un bon petit morceau.Il y a plus de 35Ans......
    En 1983......Fantastique.......
    SURRENDER U2.
    La messe est annoncée.......

  24. P.... A....

One of their very best songs as far as I am concerned. Tense and gripping, especially when they bring the character of Sadie into it.

  25. T.... F....

    I saw U2 In Live.MoreThan10x.
    Correct Fan......

But U2 Has never played this fantastic's SONG.........
U2 must Sing This Song At Every Show.
    Every Show.All around The World.
    Just For Me.
    Espécially In France.

  26. H.... H....

    I hesitate to investigate u2 after 1999

  27. K.... B....

Without a doubt one of the best albums ever, and that's coming from a Pink Floyd fan best band ever !

  28. E.... 9....

quando era adolescente tinha o vinil war do u2. escutava muito.

  29. m.... ....

2:05 The Coconuts are rocking it on backing vocals (OOOOH)!

  30. m.... ....

Loving the Coconuts on backing vocals (especially during the second chorus, OOOOH)!

  31. O.... G....

Released on this day(February 28) in 1983, U2's "War". Great album. Great song.  Cheers!

  32. R.... S....

Wish they would perform this song live in 2019

  33. C.... B....

I remember Edge saying this album was full of "helicopter guitars". Between that (all those staccato chords) and his slide steel, this record is incredibly ambiatic. UBER classic!

  34. b.... ....

Papa sing my, sing my song

  35. A.... ....

Edge has (or did) a certain Hendrix quality to him, he's not as skilled as a soloist, but thats not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about how to get a certain sonic quality that goes beyond just playing the note.

  36. J.... B....

No matter, music makes time travel, here in Brazil, in 1985, it was a harbinger of new times

  37. c.... c....

uno de los mejores grupos de rock de la historia

  38. D.... R....

    One M0:00RE Time.

  39. D.... T....

The most underrated cut on the album! The backing vocals are amazing!

  40. A.... P....

    bellissima

  41. N.... S....

Can't get enough of this song ughhhh

    N.... S....

It's the hidden gem on war

    N.... S....

@Paul Young Agreed! A wonderful texture of sounds and feelings

    N.... S....

    Giving it one more spin

    N.... S....

It's just so good! Great thing about this band is the number of hidden gems they have.

    N.... S....

    What a song ??

  42. w.... m....

Kid Creoles Coconuts with the backing vocals.

  43. U.... P....

    The real sound of U2

    U.... P....

Yes their early works was so much better till they got too commercialized!!

  44. M.... D....

Álbum excelente. Música boa não envelhece.

  45. O.... a....

Oh, the city's alight with lovers and lies
    And bright blue eyes
Oh, the city is bright, it's brighter than day tonight

Now Sadie's on the street and the people she meets you know

  46. R.... L....

The time when U2 made emotional music. Last ten years orso not a track moved me

  47. A.... S....

    Maravilhoso U2.

  48. P.... H....

Bono sounds like he was going through a tight throat, Robert Smith fase ...

    P.... H....

He still was kinda learning to sing.

    P.... H....

    Make that phase...

  49. .... ....

    My favorite song

  50. J.... V....

The live concert from Red Rocks opens with this. Really heavy shit!!

  51. e.... ....

I'm here for the backing vocals.

  52. D.... P....

    Really underrated song

  53. T.... B....

This era of U2 was - and certainly still is - WAY beyond anything else since that time. Chameleons UK and Swans were comparable, though

  54. W.... Q....

U2 is an easy fix, they need to make a rock album, easy peazy. U2 is not a pop band. Well, they shouldn't be chasing teenagers at any rate, make music for the fans who actually have a history with the band and you might be amazed at the results.

    W.... Q....

    Wayne Quirion agreed

    W.... Q....

100% this. First two decades are good/great albums while post 2000 is good/great songs, there's more consistency in the first two decades.

I'm 23 and prefer the songs that they don't pick as singles.

    W.... Q....

How to dismantle an atomic bomb was a rock album

  55. C.... G....

    What's that Apollo mission-like *BEEP* at 00:25 ?

    C.... G....

Cary Groneveldt 👍 fuck how did u pick that up ? I’ve listened to this track 1000 times over ?

    C.... G....

Good one. Love how they did this all with strings only Apparently errant beeps and resonant frequencies have a way of getting superposed, like waves and difracted rays.

  56. P.... L....

It's nice to hear ladies singing at the back. U2 never really did ladies singing at the back of them, apart from this.

    P.... L....

The troubles,Lykke Li does a duet with Bono, very cool song imo

  57. P.... L....

    Great start, lots of atmosphere.

  58. d.... ....

A masterpiece of an album on which U2 stays true to their roots, before they started becoming all obsessed with America (there's a reason why the critics, by and large, voted thumbs down on Rattle And Hum).

And I'd say there's a definite David Gilmour influence on Edge's playing on this track. :)

    d.... ....

They were always obsessed with America. There's an interview with Bono and Edge during Boy and Bono talks about how much he likes America

  59. d.... ....

Possibly their best song. Love the backing vocals.

  60. P.... L....

it's weird I've been a u2 fan 4 along time the old albums sound betting than there New stuff but still but band ever

  61. J.... T....

Jimbo dog you surrendering son of bitches to g.w.b ....

  62. P.... T....

This song, "two hearts" and "new year's day" are my favs from this album. More raw talent than the Beatles.

    P.... T....

    Blasphemy

    P.... T....

This blows ANYTHING the Beatles have EVER done, out the door down the street and round the block.

  63. T.... M....

Oh, the city's alight with lovers and lies
    And bright blue eyes.
Oh, the city is bright, it's brighter than day tonight.

  64. N.... ....

Come on now folks, War is not better than Boy.

  65. m.... ....

The whole WAR Album is a Masterpiece!

  66. K.... K....

  71. G.... S....

    G.... S....

George Schlaline life and being young

  72. K.... K....

Surrender!  Awesome.  Where is this music today?

  73. c.... ....

I borrowed this album from a friend (wonder if he 'membaz')

  74. J.... C....

Songs like these come on Deep Tracks on Sirius radio and you wonder how you forgot them? ..smile as you reflect, remembering your life as it was then. Then, you come to You Tube for more!

  75. C.... ....

Starter for 10 - female backing vocals?

    C.... ....

    spot on my friend!

  76. P.... Y....

1st u2 album I bought, wore it out ,had to buy 2nd copy, can you hear "bullet the blue sky" in this song.

    P.... Y....

    Paul Young

  78. F.... M....

I would love to hear this on a rockin road trip, one of those long roads stretching to the horizon........................

  79. M.... G....

Great riff at the end by The Edge

  80. A.... D....

one of the greatest albums ever.

  81. k.... ....

When U2 where once a great band.

    k.... ....

Still are. Every show in their current tour is sold out and nothing but positive feedback. While in San Antonio I met a guy with the JT 2017 shirt and he said the Houston show was great.

  82. C.... a....

Best thing about the older U2 music is that you can feel the angst and the youth in their music. It gives you a sense of hope and peace, while making you mad at the same time. The newer stuff just doesn't have that "feel" to it.

    C.... a....

well said, The turning point was Joshua Tree, I love and I hate that album, as an album it's good, but it just blew them up to big and lost their youth after that.

    C.... a....

    Bollocks.

    C.... a....

I remember cringing when I heard the comparisons between U2 and Arcade Fire, but I see it. The vitality, the hope, and the needing to bounce around endlessly in joy. This is the U2 I miss.

  83. L.... D....

This Album is definitely in.my U2's top 3. AB and WAR.

  84. P.... A....

the edge has the most amazing distorcions on earth

  85. P.... A....

amazing. there is no music similar to this in the fuckin earth. im not saying tha this is the best musi ever. i am a headbanger myself and musicia and this really give me chills everytime

  86. J.... ....

The Edge absolutely rips this in to another dimension. I love listening to older U2 tracks.

    J.... ....

"Boy" turned out to be my favorite, looking back..

  87. E.... R....

By far my favorite U2 album

  88. t.... ....

    My favorite U2 song ever!

    t.... ....

therealsoulproduct this song makes u fly with the music notes. Definitely to smooth and in a strange way sounds sexy by the music.

  89. W.... F....

I learned all these songs on bass, and I had a blast playing them !!!!!

  90. p.... i....

    perfect time
    perfect rythm beautiful sound

  91. J.... P....

    Fuck, The Edge is amazing

    J.... P....

Don't hate the player because his name is cooler than yours, mate!!

  92. J.... L....

    Ah, but he's still sincere.
    How could he not be?
Still, Surrender needs to be resurrected for the stage.
I'd love to see them drop more surprises into their sets.
    The Innocence shows were fantastic.

  93. C.... M....

the guitar work on Surrender and Gloria kick ass!

    C.... M....

That's right! The Edge does it well!

    C.... M....

Christopher Mirkovich fuck i wante to hate u2 bono is so pretty mfer i surrender

  94. P.... W....

    TOP PERSON

  95. P.... A....

My favorite U2 song along with Love Comes Tumbling.

    P.... A....

Absolutely, yes, that one deservers more listening too.

    P.... A....

    Hum,You know And Understand U2 Song's.....

    h.... ....

I'm drunk! It's so good anytime though. Forget the negative comment. Lol
