Remember hearing this song for the first time, early 80's, very late at night on an alternative music station. And being completely floored to learn that these guys were about my age - late teens. No way... 😲
(DJs at the time felt the band was just a one-off wonder. And wouldn't last. I remember thinking, you're wrong. Very wrong. Lol...)

I was shocked to learn that this song was released in 1983, it just sounds too new to be from that time! I swear I thought it was from the mid 90s at the very least. Great song!

THIS was the period, no doubt..We were all a bit younger fer sure.....I remember listening to this BOY, OCTOBER and the Unforgettable Fire non stop on a Walkman daily in 84-85'...the Tree was on the doorstep but this was A period. They amazingly continue to make some great music after 35 yrs but you cant go back. I try and just appreciate what they STILL put out because its still the best in the bizz on any given day.

One of my all time favorites by the legendary U2. War is my favorite album by them. Every song on there is a masterpiece, and this is no exception.

Love this song! Everyone in the band was at the top of their game! Edge has some guitar slides reminiscent of Jimmy Page. Kid Creole and the Coconuts deliver great background harmony and vocals! A+++++

In 2018 "Sadie" entered the Top 20 of most given girl names in Ireland 🇮🇪 I call it a win for Bono!

Alternatively I discovered this song when I was 17 and instantly felt a deep connection with it, despite not being particularly religious. 'Two Hearts Beat as One" was another that struck a chord with me.

I have no fucking idea the last time i heard this song shame on me.

I remember Edge saying this album was full of "helicopter guitars". Between that (all those staccato chords) and his slide steel, this record is incredibly ambiatic. UBER classic!

Edge has (or did) a certain Hendrix quality to him, he's not as skilled as a soloist, but thats not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about how to get a certain sonic quality that goes beyond just playing the note.

This era of U2 was - and certainly still is - WAY beyond anything else since that time. Chameleons UK and Swans were comparable, though

U2 is an easy fix, they need to make a rock album, easy peazy. U2 is not a pop band. Well, they shouldn't be chasing teenagers at any rate, make music for the fans who actually have a history with the band and you might be amazed at the results.

100% this. First two decades are good/great albums while post 2000 is good/great songs, there's more consistency in the first two decades.

Good one. Love how they did this all with strings only Apparently errant beeps and resonant frequencies have a way of getting superposed, like waves and difracted rays.

It's nice to hear ladies singing at the back. U2 never really did ladies singing at the back of them, apart from this.

A masterpiece of an album on which U2 stays true to their roots, before they started becoming all obsessed with America (there's a reason why the critics, by and large, voted thumbs down on Rattle And Hum).

And I'd say there's a definite David Gilmour influence on Edge's playing on this track. :)

When U2 where once a great band.

Still are. Every show in their current tour is sold out and nothing but positive feedback. While in San Antonio I met a guy with the JT 2017 shirt and he said the Houston show was great.

Best thing about the older U2 music is that you can feel the angst and the youth in their music. It gives you a sense of hope and peace, while making you mad at the same time. The newer stuff just doesn't have that "feel" to it.

well said, The turning point was Joshua Tree, I love and I hate that album, as an album it's good, but it just blew them up to big and lost their youth after that.

I remember cringing when I heard the comparisons between U2 and Arcade Fire, but I see it. The vitality, the hope, and the needing to bounce around endlessly in joy. This is the U2 I miss.
