Townshend, Pete - Eminence Front Lyrics

Sun shines
People forget
The spray flies, speedboat glides
People forget
Girls smile... people forget
The snow packs, the skier tracks
People forget
They forget they're hiding

On an eminence front
Eminence front, it's a put on
Eminence front
Eminence front, it's a fuck'n put on

Drinks flow
People forget
Big wheel spins
The hair thins, people forget
The news slows... people forget
The shares crash, hopes are dashed, people forget
They forget they're hiding

Eminence front
Eminence front, it's just a put on
Eminence front
Eminence front, it's just a put on
Eminence front

Come on join the party dress to kill

Townshend, Pete Eminence Front Comments

The half-tempo of Pete's singing and his glissanding magic on the ivories turns this tune from a Stratocaster Strut into heartfelt longing and tragedy. So beautiful...

I'd be honored if some P.T. fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of SLIT SKIRTS and A LITTLE IS ENOUGH on my YT channel in tribute to one of the all-time masters of lyricism and composition. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.

Pete Townsend was still great, sorry Kenny Jones just ruined it.Loved Jones with small faces and with rod faces.

    d.... ....

Jones was too uninventive. Or, to quote Roger, he was "simplstic and stifling."

  4. J.... R....

Yes many know that bitch and his explanation I was learning the effects on their children's lives. Sandusky loves you baby

  5. M.... R....

I have always enjoyed this version, you don't hear it often

  6. C.... ....

Sincere question here -- is this Pete noodling around with a chill version of the song years or decades after it appeared on It's Hard? He delivers it in his late-career growl, to my ears. That said, I'd like to hear Norah Jones or Diana Krall record it with this arrangement.

    C.... ....

Yes, this version was recorded by Pete in his home studio in the '90s when he was (re)arranging music for a solo show. When I first heard this version, I thought it was a "demo" for the original song (as in a sketch of what the song would later be), but it's actually a demo for a remake. Superb, either way.

    C.... ....

I agree. It doesn't sound like a demo. It sounds as if it were recorded well after the Who's IH version of the song.

  7. M.... R....

    Gorgeous

  8. N.... W....

a very thoughtful version of an important song..i always go back to this version

  9. .... ....

not bad. however the original is much better. this version lacks the power and dynamics.

  10. .... ....

The Lonely Rocker loves this song!

I'd greatly appreciate it if some Pete Townshend fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal cover version of SLIT SKIRTS, which you can find by clicking on my channel devoted to unplugged covers of classic 80s/90s songs. Thanks and please pardon the self promotion.

  12. i.... 0....

sounds like Petes goofing about on the piano at his flat

  13. P.... D....

Pete Townshend knows very little about putting on a put on for himself, but sees it for miles in others. Such a rare thing for an artist of his magnitude.

  14. C.... J....

This slow version reminds me of how @prince performed at the 2004 Musicology Tour in St. Paul. What is this style called? I'll have to check back on this video for an answer because all my menu options/ email has been taken off my utube view.

  15. M.... C....

    Very unique,lovely,touching version

  16. J.... E....

    People forget.

    J.... E....

    Spring time

  17. J.... E....

Great version. Pete can tickle the ivory. Not many know that.

    J.... E....

@jonathon reardon I know but I'm not sure if that's Pete.

    J.... E....

@Floyd Collins It is. He did it in his home studio. The percussion is synthetic.

    J.... E....

@jonathon reardon townsend has lost his way on this one

    J.... E....

hope you mean lost in a good way-this is dreamy stuff

  18. M.... ....

This is haunting genius like David Bowie's "Aladdin Sane"...

  19. H.... P....

    This is beautiful.
    Pete has so much soul..

  20. J.... R....

I love this take on the song. I would LOVE to have a copy of the backing track (no vocal or solos). The piano work is gorgeous. I would love to play sax over this track.

  21. m.... l....

this song helps me forget.its an illusion

  22. b.... ....

  23. E.... S....

One of the last classic Who songs: this version illustrates how insular Pete's songwriting had gotten by this point and how the sound of the Who really didn't suit his songwriting. The Who version is more fully arranged and a not bad rock song but this is MUCH better. I don't fall for the "under arranged, guy (or girl) at the piano" thing most of the time but it works here because it's such a delicate song and it requires restraint and a more wounded vocal tone.
