Townes Van Zandt - Snake Song Lyrics
You can't hold me
I'm too slippery
I do no sleepin'
I get lonely
You can touch me
I got poison
I just might bite you
Lie in circles
On the sunlight
Shine like diamonds
On a dark night
Ain't no mercy
In my smilin'
Only fangs and
Future, he don't
Try to find me
Skin I been through
Dies behind me
Solid hollow
Wrapped in hatred
Not a drop of
Venom wasted
You can slip in
Try to find me
Hold your breath and
Flat deny me
It makes no difference
To my thinkin'
I'll be here when
You start sinkin'

Townes Van Zandt Snake Song Comments
townez was the king of melancholy and human pain, but now and again he wrote songs that were just straight up bad ass, this is one of them, RIP brother
Excellent. 🙂
Townes is one of the best songwriters ever. His songs cut to the bone. See the documentary "Be Here To Love Me."👍
2019 anybody
He is like Bob Dylan, but better !
Es una delicia escuchar al de Texas ..... grande Townes ☮️
- Your time is gone and you don't even fucking realize it!
- My time will never be gone.
"My time will never be gone..." Fr. James
When one really hears him/herself in this its time for soul searchin..
its a snake its a snake, he sings about a snake.
He's singing about a desperate woman who he tried to love but pushed him away because he had no money or nothing to offer except his Penis and his Poetry.

Thanks for posting this man! What a fucking song. Absolute killer!
Beauty of a tune.
I had no idea this song was by him! I know it from the soundtrack to the film “Lawless”. It was put together, (partially) written by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, and performed by the likes of Ralph Stanley, Willy Nelson, Mark Lanegan - and they got Emmylou Harris to sing this song, which she does in a very beautiful and ethereal way. I was amazed to hear this original version. They’re almost like two different songs, but all the genius was clearly put in there by Van Zandt. The more this man reveals to me, the more I’m blown away and falling in love. What a discovery. It seems I have hit upon a very rich seam to mine...
The genius was definitely Townes. It hurts he's not appreciated more.
Ain't it Bo Diddly that wrote it?
You can't hold me
I'm too slippery
I do no sleepin'
I get lonely
You can touch me
If you want to
I got poison
I just might bite you
Lie in circles
On the sunlight
Shine like diamonds
On a dark night
Ain't no mercy
In my smilin'
Only fangs and
Sweet beguiling
Future, he don't
Try to find me
Skin I been through
Dies behind me
Solid hollow
Wrapped in hatred
Not a drop of
Venom wasted
You can slip in
Try to find me
Hold your breath and
Flat deny me

It always amazes me, how much related the artists you like and enjoy are. I dont know that many songs by townes van zandt and I probably need to change that.
I think the first townes van zandt song i heard was waiting around to die. Great song, but i heard the cover version first on true detective, my favorite series of all time (be good tanyas) great band also. later and unrelated to that I discovered Blaze Foley, a friend of townes van zandt and one of his biggest influences. Very underrated musician, he also toured with the Kinkster Kinky Friedman, who i also enjoy listening to and some other great musicians covered his songs (Bonnie Prince Billy, Johnny Cash etc.)
Today I saw Calvary, directed by John Michael McDonagh (the guard), great director and brother of Martin McDonagh, who also directed really good films (you got to check out six shooter, my favorite short movie of all time) and the song I look up afterwards, is a townes van zandt song...
good art is always connected to more good art. Its like a vein mesh, unrelated to any contemporary fads, uniting a timeless mush of quality content
I frist heard this song a CD in 1995 I did not know who Townes was then until his death in 1997 when I lived in Austin Texas. But man Townes was beyond Genius a musican and a Songwriter I am in awe at his lyrical powers in English.
BELLISSIMA!
A wonderful example of USA blu/country.
it's good
Calvary ♥ Love it !
right on
"Purely medicinal fadder"
Also heard this from movie Calvary - excellent film noir, and haunting music - and I'm in Ft. Worth where Van Zandt was born, took an Irish film for me to truly hear a FTW musician...
Amazing singer, more amazing song writer. Truly a haunted soul. I've done some reading on him and his life and it is one of those things where he gave us great music out of his struggles with the problems in his life. So who ever added it to soundtrack for Calvary either knew this or just appreciated the song. Well chosen either way.
+JusJukin Allen Check out Jackson C Frank Another troubled soul, brilliant music though
I just watched calvary and it lead me here :)
