Tony Bennett - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams Lyrics
I walk along the street of sorrow
The boulevard of broken dreams
Where gigolo and gigolette
Can take a kiss without regret
So they forget their broken dreams
You laugh tonight and cry tomorrow
When you behold your shattered schemes
Gigolo and gigolette
Wake up to find their eyes are wet
With tears that tell of broken dreams
Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
But I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town
The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
Gigolo and gigolette
Still sing a song and dance along
The boulevard of broken dreams
Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
For I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town
The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
But gigolo and gigolette
Still sing a song and dance along
The boulevard of broken dreams

Thankfully we still have TB in this era of Fakery and bad behavior, and any other negatives that make too many "celebrities!" Tony was and Is the Real Deal! Thank you, God for Tonyy Benedetto of Corona, Queens!!!

I believe it is a 'castanet'!
This was one of the 78s my mother had. When I discovered the records later in the 1950s, this was one of the records I played the most.
he ripped off green bay
Tony's second version of this song, and one I think to be much better.

I'm not sure who arranged this, but yes---clearly----it's a young Tony, singing. --------------------WolfSky9
My grandad used to play Bennett to me as a baby, it would always make me fall asleep. Even to this day 20 years later, I still get drosey listening to this legend

Love this version, but wonder how others think it compares with Billy Eckstine's recording???
Just stay away from the junk
I hate when people said it's better than Green Day. Just shut the fuck up nd enjoy.

Oh, wow
Goodfellas & Green Day
OK dissenters, this was recorded before Bennett learned how to sing and was being run by Mitch Miller. Listen to the much later recording of him with Sting and hear how much he had learned over the years to become the master he now is.
You're kidding, right?
Just stay away from the gobbidge. You know what I mean.

Bennett is in fine vocal form here, but I think the dance arrangement is a little odd (there were a lot of odd arrangements serving as vocal accompaniments in the 50's - perhaps it was a time of experimentation for arrangers) since Bennett was a singer and not a dancer.
Sounds like a standard tango to me.
100 times better than green day.
Ahora escuche la versiòn original: Veinte años Maria Teresa Vera y Lorenzo Hierrezuelo , troba cubana de 1935
I walk a lonely road, the only road that I have ever known. Don't know where it goes, but it's home to me and I walk alone.

This is horrible.....I have heard so much better especialllyin foreign languages.
It's not horrible--you just don't like it. A lot of people do.
please stop smoking those funny cigarettes. They make you say silly things!
i believe this is the Latin sounding version from 1952 as opposed to the first time it came out in 1950 by Tony
You are right!
Correct! Good ear!
Much better than Green Day's
+Emmy Cate damn

+Patrick Nolin don't worry, u STILL didn't get it!
I'm going through the same thing. Just remember that if she is the love of your life that you would still be together. That is what I have to tell myself every morning
This is not his first recording of this song. Its the second version.

You don't look for good music, you just listen to the radio. I'll name a few good artists:
Seth MacFarlene
Tony Bennett
Michael Bublé
Paul Baribeau
AJJ
Neutral Milk Hotel
Jeff Mangum
Bob Dylan
Joshua Alexander Pagliara-Nydam even the radio has some talented artists. But people are afraid of listening to them because they're pop
#GreenDaydiditbetter
you fucking idiots this is a different song
#facepalm
I agree, but I like this one too.
No comparison to Tony -- a totally different genre and time period.
caleb lowe piss off
It is just a temporary consolation just all, it works but not for a longtime ..
Aww...man. Tony's probably the best male singer ever ! I think he just blows everybody else out of the water !
good sound..
I would have so much more respect for America if they still produced music like this.
@Bolly Boi Well then fuck off. I don't have the time, energy, or the fucks to give to go sifting thru all the shitty fucking dubstep that's out there. That shit's not even music, it's transformer porn.
If you're gonna make a statement, prepare to back it up.
First don't diss America because time passes. Music like this was a sample of better times not nations, second check out puddles pity for an awesome cover of this one
Wehrmacht I wonder if you respect the countries that ban this wonderful music?
America still blows the rest of the world out of the fucking water with the Phenomenal music they produce...the rest of the world could never compete with American Exceptionalism in all fields
First heard in London, used in an ad for "Strictly Come Dancing." Love this song.
TheLadyDiazepam I heard it in an advert for the Apprentice UK
What a decent guy!
Un grande de verdad!!!
Every time I played this record, my two year old daughter would immediately dance to the end.!
You have a very smart daughter, hope she likes it when she becomes a teen
She knows a good tango when she hears it!

This is production is best enjoyed in a satirical scope. Very bold for 1950!
I like the song and Tony. But the speed is way too fast for the sentiments being expressed. And the instrumentals here are nearly dominating his voice. Sounds like he's being forced to keep up with the orchestra. I' suggest you listen to Billy Ekstine version to hear a much more mellow and commanding vocal arraingment.
Tony signed with Columbia Records in early 1951, His first record was "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", It went nowhere. two other recordings followed with the same results. They were thinking of dropping the young singer but gave him one more chance which was "Cold Cold Heart" and "Because Of You" a two sided hit. The rest is history, "Boulevard" was recorded again but never was charted.
Its funny that you say this is overlooked (presumably in America) because I'm a 19 year old from England and the only 2 songs that we know is that "fly me to the moon" one and this, It's one of my favourite songs from the olden days :)
"he recorded" -- typo.
Sinatra called him "a singer's singer." Thanks for this particular version. I like it much better than the original her recorded.
I know Christopher Walken as an actor, but I have never heard him sing
Music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin.
nice old song :-)
For some reason in England, this is one of Tony's most popular songs.
Awwwsome! He is so goood
I love this man, I am googoogaga for him...
Sem dúvida a versão de Tony Bennett é a melhor
that is a beautiful voice you have
The years have been very kind to him. I love his voice :)
Yes! I saw him in August and oh dear Lord he still has the same beautiful lungs he once did! He is such an astounding performer!
If you like a slower version, look for Bennett's original on this one, which is slower. I like this better, but everyone should listen to what they enjoy most. The original is also here on youtube posted by overjazzrecords.
I have the 40 Year set and when I listened to it, the tunes sounded as I had remembered, except for this. I have an LP, Tony's Greatest Hits CS8652, on which Boulevard sounds like this. Assuming care was taken for that 40 Year set, I guess that is the original. As his voice sounds the same, one can assume this second recording was made not long after. I'm with you, I like #2 better. I think Tony understood the tune better and sang it with more confidence and in more of a the tango tempo.
I bpught this recording as a 45 back in the mid 50's. since it had not been a hit I thought it was the orginal but after I put this on YT I've been told that this was rerecorded after he made it big. I still think this is the best version.
Early on his label asked Tony to agree to 3 changes, 2 of which he gave in on. Antonio Benedetto became Tony Bennett, he agreed to wearing a hairpiece, as a prematurely balding man, but Tony refused to get the nose job that was requested. He was afraid that it might have changed the quality of his voice. Supposedly why Steisand also demurred. On the other hand Vito Farinola became Vic Damone and did get his nose fixed. Certainly didn't have any negative effect on him.
This is not the version in the 4 CD Forty Years Bennett box set, but it is the better one, though both are early in his career versions.
One of my 3 favorite early Bennett songs, along with Rags to Riches and Just In Time. Great posting. Tony really shows in this song that is he a great talent.
OF COURSE.. wow.. i cant believe you asked that. he just released a new album.
he sang today at the Giants World series parade
I saw him perform in july in Rotterdam, I have uploaded a short video of the performance.
God this is hot!
I'm sure Green Day knew that there was a song called this. That's the only reason this phrase is in the lexicon.
Green Day♥
yes, he is still around , and is about the last of the big singers of the fifties.
I so totally agree-- try looking up Hurt -- I wanted the old Timi Your 60s song AND boy! what a surprise!!
I do wish that when people write a song they'd take the time to find out if the title has been used before, and if so, DON'T USE IT. Shania Twain had to go write a song called "From This Moment On," which was already taken, by no less than Cole Porter.
As to Tony, he is awesome in every way. IMHO, he's an even better singer now than when this recording was made. The voice is rougher, and the highest notes aren't there, but there's a maturity and above all a wonderful joy still in his singing.
