Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up Lyrics

When I'm lyin' in my bed at night
I don't wanna grow up
Nothin' ever seems to turn out right
I don't wanna grow up
How do you move in a world of fog
That's always changing things
Makes me wish that I could be a dog
When I see the price that you pay
I don't wanna grow up
I don't ever wanna be that way
I don't wanna grow up

Seems like folks turn into things
that they'd never want
The only thing to live for
Is today...
I'm gonna put a hole in my TV set
I don't wanna grow up
Open up the medicine chest
And I don't wanna grow up
I don't wanna have to shout it out
I don't want my hair to fall out
I don't wanna be filled with doubt
I don't wanna be a good boy scout
I don't wanna have to learn to count
I don't wanna have the biggest amount
I don't wanna grow up

Well when I see my parents fight
I don't wanna grow up
They all go out and drinking all night
And I don't wanna grow up
I'd rather stay here in my room
Nothin' out there but sad and gloom
I don't wanna live in a big old tomb
On Grand Street

When I see the 5 o'clock news
I don't wanna grow up
Comb their hair and shine their shoes
I don't wanna grow up
Stay around in my old hometown
I don't wanna put no money down
I don't wanna get me a big old loan
Work them fingers to the bone
I don't wanna float a broom
Fall in love and get married then boom
How the hell did it get here so soon
I don't wanna grow up

Hakenkreuze, Acht (!)

Conformism is evil. I was a happy child until my parents started trying to force me to conform to their narrow vision of what they thought I should be. I never conformed but their attempts at conformism took something from me that I don't think I ever got back. Never conform, never give in, never surrender.

Ramones, ramones, ramones. Cmon, it is like comparing penis with finger. Two different styles. Aaand Ramones sound is flat and they sound flat, boring for me.
This is the only version, sorry Ramones fans.

    K.... K....

Didn't know Tom Waits wrote this song but the Ramones capture the spirit, lyrics are clearer, and good guitar solo.

  42. j.... ....

Garbage. All this music from this guy is garbage from garbage town

  43. J.... ....

Ha! I must’ve forgotten that the Ramones didn’t write this originally

  59. G.... ....

Tom Waits is a better singer than Ariana Grande. If you disagree, fuck you.

  60. D.... V....

  64. F.... D....

beavis and buutt head is my help to know tom waits but i litent heavy metal but tom is original and particolar

  65. S.... P....

People are more familiar with the Ramones version but ultimately it's dispassionate. There are very few artists who have ever done a decent cover of a Tom Waits song, if you don't dig it don't do it in my opinion x

  66. D.... ....

Tom Waits is a fucking genius. End of Story point blank.

  67. J.... S....

Glad to see that someone covered the Miley Cyrus version. Still, she blows this away.

  68. d.... a....

    Ramones did it better

    d.... a....

I suppose if you prefer watered down pop masquerading as edgy punk that's 20 years past its expiration date, they certainly did.

  69. J.... H....

I first heard this song back when I was about 9 or 10, back in the early nighties (via beavis and butthead), and for some reason it always stayed with me. I never heard another Waits song until about two years ago when I finally bought Bone Machine and thus begun a journey into the back catalogue of the most original, badass, diverse artists I think has ever graced the earth. This is still my fav waits song. I love the simplicity, the sentiment, and the sense of nostalgia it conjures. Sheer genius. Love it

  70. W.... ....

love all Toms music, bloody genius

  71. C.... J....

    Happy birthday, Tom

  72. R.... B....

to grow up it means to be an enterpreneur or self employed and not to obey some stupid social norms

  73. L.... P....

This conveys all my underlying values!

  74. M.... P....

This must be a mid-90's video, where bands tried to come off as weird as imaginely possible, and with no deep meaning.

    This video_song fucking sucks

    M.... P....

Marco Parada i think you grew up

  75. M.... m....

Only a genius could write this song but Tom is the only genius who did.

  76. L.... G....

Personally I prefer the Ramones version.

  77. D.... ....

What's that vintage guitar he's playing? I need one for my collection.

  78. J.... B....

The intro could seriously be for a Marilyn Manson video.

    J.... B....

    J Baxter Fuck mary lynn

    J.... B....

i think Marilyn was inspired by Tom. His voice sounds similar in some songs and he indeed used that weird thing with the magnifying glass in his video

  79. L.... ....

    Cudo utwór!

  80. F.... B....

começei a gostar dessa música só por causa do Filme ''Ô Magnata''

  81. R.... K....

  82. J.... C....

Beth Greene sings it best :')

  85. T.... ....

I love Tom Waits, but I've got to admit that the Ramones cover is even better. They nailed it perfect!

    T.... ....

This is a cover of the Ramones. It's a Ramones song.

    T.... ....

    Nope. The other way round.
Tom Waits wrote, recorded and released the song in 1992.
The Ramones covered it in 1995 for the Adios Amigos record, their last record.

    T.... ....

I really like the Cold War Kids Version, its only available live and you can tell there is emotion behind it.

    T.... ....

If Lorde covers it you'll probably prefer that one

  86. S.... K....

My dad always said growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

    S.... K....

    fuck yeah

    S.... K....

    Hey aphex

    S.... K....

if you don't grow up you shouldn't be treated like one either though. be careful what you wish for.

    S.... K....

I ain't got no dad, tom waits is my dad now ill tell him someday....

  87. D.... J....

My Life Anthem since I retired just over a year ago.  And Tom Waits' version is my favorite!  Thank you, Sir!

    D.... J....

Dom Jervis Hayes Carlls my favorite, also just want to point out Tom wrote this...also it's two years later so who cares

    D.... J....

@Joe Norton I'm partial to the Ramones' cover but Tom Waits is the man.

    D.... J....

Dom Jervis Tom Waits’ version is the only version 😉

  88. o.... ....

    Video not available ???

  89. D.... J....

Beavis and Butthead brought me here.

    D.... J....

Really? Johnny, Joey, CJ and Richie brought me here...

  90. m.... m....

Love him love him love him . . . REAL REAL

  91. G.... ....

How can anyone prefer this to the ramones version? He sounds like Bobby Hill.

    G.... ....

    Fuck yeah,,

    G.... ....

The Ramones song is a good Cover, but way to much pop feel to me.... :D

    G.... ....

You mean they made their own pop version of this rough, beatup, interesting song? :D

    G.... ....

The Ramones version sounds lifeless and dull. It's essentially an antiseptic version of this song. The vocals on their version sounds like some dispassionate southern hick reading these lyrics off over a banal guitar riff. If this sounds like Bobby Hill, The Ramones version sounds like Hank.

    G.... ....

    the ramones would not agree

  92. O.... H....

If I had one wish free ... I wish me back in 1990 ... best time ever ... even I was 5 ... The world was perfect!

    O.... H....

    I was born in 90

    O.... H....

I'm from 85 too... 1990 was amazing for me!

    O.... H....

    I was 15. Fun times.

  93. M.... M....

    growing up sucks  :(

    M.... M....

Mattyramone53 it sucks and im only 30 :( shit

  94. m.... ....

I identify with this video.I never wanted to grow up. I liked being a child. It is a much richer world. I had a very abuse filled childhood and if I can still prefer that over adulthood that is a very strong statement. I had a very strong and rich inner life which I still have to this day so I know I am a still  a child inside.

    m.... ....

    well said.

  95. O.... H....

sad.. 1992 ... this was one of the best times of all time... no war .. great music and nobody has sorrows about the future ( not yet :) )

    O.... H....

Well, there was war. There's ALWAYS war. The USA was out killing people even then. But yeah, the 90s were killer. Too killer. It's why the establishment had to concoct 9/11, buy up all the radio stations, and pump us out CRAP ever since. We were getting "too" enlightened and creative.

    O.... H....

Wasn't perfect. The AIDS epidemic had claimed Arthur Ashe and Freddie Mercury (among many others who weren't famous), and racial injustice in my hometown of LA resulted in the worst urban riots in U.S. history.
