Tom Waits - Day After Tomorrow Lyrics

I got your letter today
And I miss you all so much, here
I can't wait to see you all
And I'm counting the days, dear
I still believe that there's gold
At the end of the world
And I'll come home
To Illinois
On the day after tomorrow

It is so hard
And it's cold here
And I'm tired of taking orders
And I miss old Rockford town
Up by the Wisconsin border
But I miss you won't believe
Shoveling snow and raking leaves
And my plane will touch tomorrow
On the day after tomorrow

I close my eyes
Every night
And I dream that I can hold you
They fill us full of lies
Everyone buys
About what it means to be a soldier
I still don't know how I'm supposed to feel
About all the blood that's been spilled
Look out on the street
Get me back home
On the day after tomorrow

You can't deny
The other side
Don't want to die
Any more than we do
What I'm trying to say,
Is don't they pray
To the same God that we do?
Tell me, how does God choose?
Whose prayers does he refuse?
Who turns the wheel?
And who throws the dice
On the day after tomorrow?

Mmmmmmm...
I'm not fighting
For justice
I am not fighting
For freedom
I am fighting
For my life
And another day
In the world here
I just do what I've been told
You're just the gravel on the road
And the one's that are lucky
One's come home
On the day after tomorrow

And the summer
It too will fade
And with it comes the winter's frost, dear
And I know we too are made
Of all the things that we have lost here
I'll be twenty-one today
I've been saving all my pay
And my plane will touch down
On the day after tomorrow
And my plane it will touch down
On the day after tomorrow

You Never Know What Happens Tomorrow ..brilliant song ..

  2. W.... B....

    We are not worthy.

  3. C.... G....

What beautiful, maudlin and engrossing lyrics of somebodies comment on life as I assume a vet.

  4. C.... G....

He has had a prodigious career and constantly creates compelling music from a unique artist that to me creates characters in his songs displaying a full range of emotions. When somebody says I hate Tom Waits I just sigh

  5. F.... N....

This hits uncomfortably close with all the current events going on.

  6. T.... C....

Stunning track, the best on this album. Amongst his very finest songs IMO.

  7. S.... F....

    I think you're my father.

  8. N.... G....

Who turns the wheel who rolls the dice. On the day after tomarrow...hope?....wtf .I love music

  9. S.... M....

I spent 22 years in the army and have been retired for over a year. I spent all that time looking for something the good fight I guess. I came across this song from Nick Offerman’ a book Gumption. I’m glad I did

  10. S.... L....

One of the best songs ever written, and sung. The two are inseperatable. Just great, by any standard.

  11. J.... ....

You know when your skipping songs, meaningful soft songs, and you get the loud ass fucking shitty YouTube ads and it makes your brain explode.

  12. R.... s....

Best song on this album. Simple

  13. c.... ....

    Happy Veterans Day

  14. J.... O....

I am not fighting for justice
I am not fighting for freedom

    F.... B....

It's definitely not "look out on the street...," the correct lyric is "Will God on his throne get me back home on the day after tomorrow?"

    F.... B....

*what I miss u wont believe

  16. S.... B....

i like this song but it kinda derails the album and its vibe

  17. .... ....

    ظظدجذسس

  18. A.... W....

I'm here today because of people that didn't make it to the day after tomorrow

  19. a.... t....

when I pass through Washington dc I always go to the Viet nam memorial whereon are the names of guys I grew up in with..it is there I can see their faces. the only other time I see them is when I listen to Tom sing this song. Thanks. ok

    a.... t....

This will sound crazy allen thomas. I am not even an especially emotional person, but when I went to the Viet Nam Memorial, I found tears streaming down my face. It was something about the hardness and finality of those names carved in stone and the impermanence of things that people had left at the base for their loved ones.

  20. f.... ....

    Thanks Tom that's fucking beautiful.

  21. P.... L....

This is one of my favourite songs of Tom Waits.

  22. C.... ....

First time I heard this song I started crying. So beautiful....

    C.... ....

That's nothing. The first time I merely became aware of its existence, I literally shit my pants.

  23. b.... ....

    wow. just. wow.

  24. H.... L....

it's a "I'm not fighting for justice, I am not fighting for freedom- I am just fighting for my life, and another day in the world here" kind of day today

  25. r.... ....

it's been argued, is this the saddest tom waits song, or is kentucky avenue? I argue both and say it's "tom trabuerts blues" but that's just me.

    r.... ....

Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis. #1.

    r.... ....

    Georgia Lee.

    r.... ....

"Pay Me" is the saddest song. "They pay me not to come home..."

    r.... ....

    Ruby's Arms and Georgia Lee.

    r.... ....

Yes I agree with others. This is very sad but 'Take it with me', 'Georgia Lee' and another favorite of mine 'House where nobody lives' has brought me to tears in the past. He's such an incredible songwriter though and each to their own interpretation and taste. I wouldn't argue with, or belittle anyone else's opinion on the matter. It's all completely subjective. Peace everyone ✌😊

  26. A.... B....

after all , before it happend... there are souls that are complete... creazy but complete...that is sr. Tom waits...this is a work for a complete soul

  27. C.... O....

A song told through the perspective of a 21 year old soldier sent to fight in Iraq/Afghanistan but universal and sums up so succinctly how ridiculous and tragic war is!

    C.... O....

Yeah... but sadly people have to fight it in order to keep our country safe.

    C.... O....

@Andrew Kinne sadly, people like you are as dumb as horse shit

  28. D.... J....

This song makes me wish that I knew what it is like to be a soldier, and it makes me thankful that I don't know what it's like to be a soldier.

  29. P.... G....

Nobody has The most accurate view of what he means in this song. It's up to your own interpretation. chill out.

    P.... G....

The subject matter may not be open to interpretation, but the exact viewpoint of the narrator is always questionable.  YouTube commentors aren't Tom Waits and can't tell anyone what Tom Waits meant when he wrote the song.

    P.... G....

    exactly

  30. E.... F....

Time waits for no man. Tom Waits for every man.

    E.... F....

are you a wait lifter ?

  31. G.... ....

Isn't the point of anti-war songs like this that soldiers who are sent off to kill and be killed in some faraway land DON'T serve their country? They obey their country's rulers, but they don't serve their country. Or humanity.
And you even claim to have some relation to this song that's more special than anyone else's, and you imply that people who understand the lyrics differently from you don't understand them at all? That's pretty arrogant, man.

  32. S.... ....

    You pompous ass.

  33. E.... D....

What a masterpiece. We clearly feel how free and uworried Tom must feel when he writes his brilliant stuiff. The grates songwriter ever.

  34. B.... ....

This song is so brilliantly anti-war.

  35. V.... E....

This one belongs to me personally. Thanks, Tom, for writing this one. You understand those of us who had to go away from home to serve our country. I don't care if anyone else understands the lyrics.

  36. T.... ....

    me as well

    T.... ....

    i love the way he fingerpicks. this song reminds me of {one last look}

  37. N.... J....

    Veterans Day 2012 theme

  38. M.... K....

    all things Waits..

  39. S.... ....

    Thanks i needed that.
