Tom Waits - Bad Liver And A Broken Heart (In Lowell) Lyrics
Well I got a bad liver and broken heart, yeah,
I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
And I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink
And I wish you'd a-known her, we were quite a pair,
She was sharp as a razor and soft as a prayer
And so here am I slumped, I've been chipped and I've been chumped on my stool
So buy this fool some spirits and libations, it's these railroad station bars
And all these conductors and porters, and I'm all out of quarters
And this epitaph is the aftermath, yeah I choose my path, hey, come on, Kath,
He's a lawyer, he ain't the one for ya
No, the moon ain't romantic, it's intimidating as hell,
And some guy's trying to sell me a watch
And so I'll meet you at the bottom of a bottle of bargain Scotch
I got me a bottle and a dream, it's so maudlin it seems,
You can name your poison, go on ahead and make some noise
And hey, what's your story, well I don't even care
'Cause I got my own double-cross to bear
And I'll see your Red Label, and I'll raise you one more,
And you can pour me a cab, I just can't drink no more,
'Cause it don't douse the flames that are started by dames,
It ain't like asbestos
It don't do nothing but rest us assured,
And substantiate the rumors that you've heard

Tom Waits Bad Liver And A Broken Heart (In Lowell) Comments
A long time ago I picked up a Tom Waits and a John Lee Hooker CD. The clerk said "You ain't gonna buy any whiskey are ya?"
He'll be 70 this year and his liver is hanging in there.
Quit drinkin some time ago. Thanks Kathleen! We get to keep him around.....
This guy is so fucking underated. A genius , it takes a certain kind of fan to appreciate his talent.
This was on the first Tom Waits album I ever bought and he sang it at the first live concert I ever got to see. I've loved him for over 40 years!

So welcome to the continuing saga,
She was my better half, and I was just a dog

I ain't sentimental, this ain't a purchase, it's a rental, and it's purgatory,

I bought this Small Change album with this song in the early 1970s and instantly fell in live with Tom Waits. I got to see him live in Kansas City and heard this live. Still think he's the best!
tom waits and bukowski..
It can't douse the flames, that are started by dames. What a line and so true.
no the moon ain't romantic, it's intimidating as hell
what a Maestro
he is a true artist who paints with an experienced brush and vivid colours
Great song. I feel like I've run out of things to explain how great tom waits is... If this is a new song to you or, your just getting into his legacy, this album did it for me... Among many others... It just depends what your into-- he is very fun and unordinary
"unordinary": sums him up in one word. Perfect.
I've loved his stuff for over 40 years and was lucky enough to see him live twice in Kansas City years ago, He's great!
