he's referring to himself I believe..
I met Tommy and Thomas in Alaska. Tommy said only thing worse then dying was waking up everyday wishin you was...Thomas said" sick people do sick fucking things". I say- "recovery from what ailes you in life is a gift, some assembly required".

I understand Tom is in a coma following cardiac arrest. He most likely had hypoxia, and maybe anoxia. His condition is still very critical, but unlike many uninformed posters on here have said, he is not dead. I really hope that they put him in a state of hibernation during this most important healing time. I know that he will not be conscious for a good amount of time, but this song really signifies what I wish for him. I was in a coma following hypoxia in 1993, and music including Petty was my motivation to get better,

Except for the voice, this could be Jackson Browne...........Tom is amazing. We wanna' put a statue up for him here in Gainesville, but there's a lot to do before that happens.

Heh math, statues are good. Best wishes. They knew each other as you know. Just don't let anyone tell you Tom was a minor version of Bob Dylan, ever. He was a free-standing structure, needs no extra support, in my book vastly underrated.

I've Always loved Tom Petty's music I guess he and Bob Dylan smoked the same kind of pot in high school or something Lol

It's actually not funny. Dylan doesn't give a flying fuck about other people despite his nobel prize winning genius and Tom never was a minor example of him. I still think he is underappreciated : The Travelling Wilburys didn't begin with Dylan but George Harrison who like Tom had the gift of true friendship. And for all those idiots (not you) who think Tom sounds like Dylan; yes, sometimes, he was a born musician and a natural unconscious mimic but take this album, Dylan? Voice? Nobody was like Tom. Best wishes and sorry for mouthing off.

IT´S WAKE UP TIME, love the all album

I had never heard of or knew anything at all of this album and after finding out about it & hearing it for the first time, I was just very in awe of what I believe to be a sort of thing he wrote about himself & I have more respect for him. it's not an easy thing to admit to being human & having a hard time of it when you are a famous person, that you are only human, like the rest of us. I say, Go Tom Petty!!

Rhonda Grefsrud In interviews he tried to say a lot of these deep songs weren't about him personally. He equated it to an actor playing a role. But I have to wonder if they were about personal experiences that were just a little too raw, a little too painful to share and also admit were about his own life... an attempt to have at least a thin vail of privacy.

Wildflowers is crazy good. It's his best IMHO.

@alex deatley He admitted that the songs were about him later and called this "the divorce record." It's always been my favorite of his and took on an entirely new meaning after I read that interview. Rick Rubin also had some things to add to what he said. Amazing record. It was Tom Petty's favorite in all of his career and was originally slated to be a "double album" but the label squashed that idea. Anyway, I only read this stuff recently so thought I would post it here. Enjoy!
