He was on it while making the album, but got clean in time for the tour. And Howie Epstein couldn't even make it to the cover shoot because he was so far gone. Tough times, but they still put out a hell of an album despite all of that! Tom never liked this album. I think it's the only one he ever felt truly negative about.

Most Tom Petty fans have actually never heard some of his best stuff.

So true! I've spent the past year finding so many great songs that I'd never have known about without going fishing. I watched "Runnin' Down A Dream" and that really got me going. Best music documentary/movie I've ever seen.

Never understood why Echo wasn't a huge album...

Echo is just one of several that should have been much bigger.

This song, and the entire album are one of Tom Petty's true lost classics. But you'll never hear them on the radio or live as Petty was going through a very traumatic divorce at the time, which he prefers not to reminisce about often. Listen to the lyrics and they are so timeless and devastating in their eloquence and truth. This album came out in 1999 and blew me away. Still does!
