Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Straight Into Darkness Comments
  1. e.... b....

\this is Bob Dylan's favorite recording of the Heartbreakers, Ir was when they were touring with him. To me, as a woman, this was a frantic call for help; there was nothing to go home to but his infant daughter. ^he Wildflowers project reflected that deep ambivalence and Tom's constant sense of protectiveness that lasted a life time.

  2. L.... M....

Its hard to believe this tune and the killer album are almost 40 years... Dang ... where have all the good times gone?...

  3. Q.... ....

    Such a beautiful, under-rated gem.

    Q.... ....

I still love this song. Today I usually I listen to new music all the time, but this one holds a special place in my musical heart. I think it will be played on my funeral.

  4. T.... C....

There was a little girl.............I used to love her..............absolutely Fabbo Tom. RIP!

    A very reflective song 💔

    M.... B....

I agree Mark. Still hits me after all these years

    M.... B....

@tomsawyermusic same here , many many years gone , still thinking about her.

    M.... B....

Incredible song ! Thank you Tom , all men need to hear this.

  6. e.... b....

If any musicians are out there, is there a similarity in the chord progressions between this song and Don't Fear the Reaper, by … I plead half-zeimers.

  7. e.... b....

This song breaks my heart; it's Bob Dylan's favorite song written by Tom, but situated biographically, his first marriage was in trouble very early on and given his need for the kind of consistency he never experienced growing up with a violent, vile abusive father it must have been so important that his own family not break apart. Of all the really great artists of that era (ok 40 plus years is quite an era) his music has always been the most emotionally accessible for so many people. I love the interview with Joni Mitchell on CBC, Jian Ghomeshi, where she said a lot of incredible things, but one theme she was passionate about was that our celebrity culture is a form of mental illness. When she writes a song and someone responds to it, in her view, they meet in the middle and there's a kind of alchemy about the singer and the song and the listener meeting at that precise point. That holds true for Tom and his Heartbreakers. I didn't take the Pettytheft tour seriously at the beginning, and sometimes cover tunes simply don't cut it, but the more I hear about it the more I am intrigued. Bless them all.

  8. B.... R....

Escaping into darkness is what many of us have to do reality really does bite sometimes toms passing has left a hole and sometimes it’s great to get in the hole listen to his tunes and really enjoy the pease and tranquility of darkness too much light is after all blinding

  9. R.... H....

lots of feeling in this song means a lot to me

  10. t.... ....

This song almost brings me to tears, not sure why. Hits me in the soul.

i remeber a night in the tacoma dome in washington. jackson browne opened. MY FIRST CONCERT!!!! I Miss you so much petty god speed man

  13. P.... E....

Played this album endlessly in 1982, and for me this was the best of Tom Petty. For some reason it never gets played these days on mainstream radio or even Sirius, they only ever play his more recent stuff. Just look at the views: 79,484 for this, 54 million for "Free Falling".

  14. L.... H....

This should have 7.9 million views.

  15. P.... M....

When I was a teen Iwent to visit my college age brother who lived next door to a bass player. He had just returned a day late from cutting a demo at Shelter Records. He had to wait an extra day to get into the studio because an unknown act named Tom Petty was there cutting a demo too. I asked him if the guy was any good and he said,”well,he had some pretty good tunes, but he couldn’t really sing.” It makes me smile every time I hear Tom’s voice. Of course we can’t imagine anyone else’s voice on his songs now,but you have to admit it is a quirky voice. I love it so much!

    P.... M....

Paul Max, hello that is so weird (see below). I think his voice was meant to adapt to his characters, not to sound pretty; occasionally he skirted autobiography but he was essentially a lyric poet; also cameleon (sp sorry) quality; I've heard 'he sounds like the Byrds, no the Beatles no somebody else. He listened to so much music and soaked it all up; I liked the timbre of his voice as he got older and didn't feel he had to handle the high harmonies anymore == he was a genius. My sis is a recording artist and by happenstance knows everybody so I can relate to your anecdote. He is universally mourned, and occasionally some fan posts something like, I knew Tom Petty and we had a special moment etc. which is missing the point entirely. But I appreciate what you wrote, love stories like that!!!!

    P.... M....

Thanks for your nice comment Paul =)

  16. B.... O....

Do you find yourself becoming obsessed by Tom Petty songs? This one is totally in my head right now. I can feel myself going back in time. Flying straight into darkness, from Vancouver to London, 1978. I just wish I'd seen the band there.

    B.... O....

    Ii am too......❣️🎶

  17. W.... B....

    Best song he ever did.

  18. H.... ....

Every 2nd day of every month, I count the months since he's been gone. RIP Tom.

  19. e.... b....

Bob Dylan;s favorite song. Everything Tom Petty wrote and sang with his brilliant band was numinous; it affected everyone in such a profound way.

  20. e.... b....

It`s wonderful that so many people love this unique man who died before his time because he felt such a deep obligation to his audience. Extraordinary loveable man. But what if he could hear everybody still back here on earth who alternatively celebrate and mourn him? We`re in the millions. It`s so hard to let go of someone who has been such an inspiration but I think that`s necessary. This is not to say we ought not to listen to his brilliant music. He loved dogs and I think of him as a brilliant light, part of the Orion constellation.

  21. s.... ....

    Killer tune!

  22. B.... C....

Oh joy! Yet another hidden gem from Tom Petty. Strong echoes of the Byrds. May those ringing Rickenbackers play on forever.

  23. e.... b....

I didn't identify your moniker as tomsawyermusic. I should have spoken in the name of Huckleberry Finn the name of my dog and best friend. One of my most poignant memories is a reference Tom made to Samuel Clemens and almost no-one got it. Tx my friend.

    e.... b....

I love that reference, too! Tom would have looked great in white linen!

  24. s.... ....

I miss you. There's quite a band where you are now. Play on...

  25. s.... h....

I cannot stop watching Tom Petty videos. Just watched the four hour movie of Tom and the Heartbreakers on Netflix.I bet Heaven is a more colorful, kind and rockin' place now.

    s.... h....

I felt like that 7 months ago: I`m a free-lance writer so I set out to write about my favorite videos and got a good response from a publishing company. I felt awkward because I was very sad that this brilliant man was gone and I didn't want to try and capitalize on his death. I still think the stuff I wrote was good but its primary purpose was therapy -- I put it aside when I realized it was getting personal. Learned a lot however: Runnin Down a Dream is a great example of how Tom Petty who was essentially an introverted genius, comfortable really only with his mates and needing the stability of a family and someone to love, had an uncanny ability to choose the right people to set the record straight -- and to let them get on with it. I do know what you mean; I've got everything I could find that was recorded, but there is a good reason for videos and sometimes it's just a joyous moment to watch the band playing. Certainly 7 months ago. If there is a Heaven, I agree. He's hanging out with George and Roy and Dell and possibly my Dad (always hoped he would find excellent company up there). Cheers! Tx for great posting.

  26. T.... C....

This was one of m,y favorite tracks of of that album. I was about 15 when I bought it. I am really going to miss him.

  27. C.... D....

    RIP brother.

  28. M.... B....

My personal favorite of t.p. and the heartbreakers. R.i.p., tom

  29. M.... G....

Rest in Peace Tom Petty--one of my favorite TP and the Heartbreakers songs....sad to see him go...

  30. c.... ....

pulled out my copy of Long After Dark on vinyl tonight.... Straight into Darkness... a world without Tom Petty? I remember a concert at Tinley Park Illinois in the 90's when I held my daughter on my shoulders so she could see a real Rock'n'roll band play....she was only maybe 10 years old....I remember the feeling at the time.....

  31. K.... B....

    RIP Tom

  32. R.... S....

Beautiful song. Rest in peace legend.

  33. B.... K....

    RIP Mr. Petty.

  34. D.... L....

    RIP Tom Petty.

  35. R.... ....

    Rip, u will be missed!

  36. e.... b....

I believe both Springsteen and Bob Dylan cited this as a track they really admired (Conversations with Tom Petty, P. Zollo). The lyrics are simple and possibly dangerously autobiographical at the time, but it's the keyboard/bassline that provides the dark emotional ballast to the vocal phrasing; it's a bit like U2's "it's a beautiful day" or Sting's "King of Pain" at the beginning and becomes something utterly other. Just an amazing songwriter and band; can't be captured, but definitely distilled experience as no other artist can create and transmit it.

    e.... b....

When Tom died, Jackson Browne said he was jealous of Tom because Tom could say it in 3 words whereas Jackson needed 3 pages. Think about "Even the losers". You know what the song is about just from the title. This song is one of the best, the words are compact and almost everyone has had this experience. The music is simple
and so beautiful and so complimentary to the words.

  37. K.... B....

the minor notes break my heart, then build it back up again.

  38. N.... W....

    God bless the Rickenbacker.

  39. M.... P....

Tom Petty and the Breakers are my Beatles for the past couple of
decades. TP is a genius musician, composer, singer, arranger, manager of
his band....my gosh....how many catchy tunes and deeply meaningful or
fun songs does this man have in him? Best rock group around for years.
No praise does them justice. Proud to say I live 10 minutes from his
boy hood home. I'm a musician too, so I go park my car in front of his
boyhood home and just sit in wonder and praise............and get the
vibes, man!!!!!!! He's made my life significantly more enjoyable. I
play along with my various music devices (vinyl, cassette, CD's) with
him and the band on my keyboards and pianos all the time. I add some
harmonies. Many tunes just a few chords. But each one is crafted SO
well...........so so well. If I go to heaven, I want to thank PT for
his gift to us of his work and music!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    M.... P....

Right back at you! I grew up with the Beatles and the Whole Catastrophe, as Zorba the Greek would put it. My sister's a musician and I spent many hours in the studio watching the process -- it was riveting. Wanted to be a sound engineer in the analogue days. ....... So glad everybody keeps rediscovering this beautiful noise. It's not a good time for so-called popular music, but I do believe the news about the near future is heartening; passing on the torch. I'm trying to write about themes in Petty's lyrics. I can read music, and listen, but I'm not a musicologist like Paul Zollo. So much drivel produced about Dylan recently, probably vr soon about Cohen too. But they were essentially poets who could be separated from their musical medium. Can't do it with Tom Petty & H. Thanks for posting your comment. Grew up an amphibian: classical music and that of my time. I agree with you: Best rock group for ... 40 yrs and counting. Wow! Best wishes.

  40. M.... P....

This song has no words to describe it for me...it rocks right through me in a fantastic way, and it feels like it always will. Timeless. Hey, did you see Gainesville, FL, at the start of the vid on the map? Tom P. is from there, and so am I....I'm about 10 minutes right now from the house the genius grew up in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    M.... P....

Your comment put a big smile on my face man :-D
I know TP is from Gainsville FL, thats why it's on the globe on this video.
    Take care Math

    M.... P....

You're so kind tomsawyermusic. Thank you!

  41. B.... T....

Good song. Long After Dark is the best Petty.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Straight Into Darkness

  44. C.... ....

"Long After Dark" was one of the very first rock albums I bought new (on cassette) when I got my first paying job. It sounds as good if not better almost 35 years later.

  45. s.... ....

What amazing sound quality on this video. Petty and the boys are just amazing.

  46. A.... W....

"I don't believe the good times are over
I don't believe the thrill is all gone
Real love is a man's salvation
The weak ones fall the strong carry on"

    A.... W....

a beautiful brilliant man with a life long sense of justice whose music belongs to all of us and nobody. I love everyone's experience of this song and others. Tx to all for posting vital experiences, read each one with my puppy on my lap, best thing that ever happened to me; yes I went to many rock concerts and nothing moved me more than the generosity of this rock genius essentially an introvert who had a special relationship live with his audience, awesome.

  47. M.... V....

Tom always loved the cutting truth. It must be a very hard way to love.

  48. d.... k....

One flies 'up to' or 'over to', Long Island. Tom, is flying 'OUT to London'. Listen to the f**kin' words. Long Island? Hello??

    d.... k....

    @david knowitall Even a know-it-all doesn't have to be a dick.

    d.... k....

+david knowitall : It's called "lyrical license" ... same as poetry.

    d.... k....

'Lyrical license'? It's 'poetic license', btw, but this dude is going to London, not Long Island. Sorry, if I am a dick... ;) (OCD)

    d.... k....

You do know about the urban myth that American Girl was written about a student who committed suicide? All crap. And I know Mr. Petty is concerned about his enunciation ... but his musical phrasing is way more important. People are always going to misinterpret or mis-hear his lyrics. I was interested in this track because both Dylan and Springsteen cite this as one of their favorites. Interesting coincidence. Also song was dangerously autobiographical for a poet who needs his masks and metaphors. But yeah, the keyboard and bass line are really hypnotic; lyrics are spare, no messing about in the studio. Another haunting masterpiece.

    d.... k....

    He says out to London.

  49. D.... D....

    Fantastic song.

  50. M.... D....

The line is "I remember flying out to Long Island..."

    M.... D....

lol wrong. "flying out to London"

    M.... D....

Damn... I went to like 10 different lyrics sites and they all say London... at least tell me you can hear "Long Island" now if you listen for it, lol

    M.... D....

    @Melissa Dawn

yeah, i cant blame ya. Tom had a problem enunciating his words when he was younger.

    M.... D....

Very astute observation; a lot of people hear it as flying out to London. Improbably, Grace Jones did a cover for one of his songs and wanted an extra verse and some clarification of lyrics, and after that he was much more careful about his diction. I always thought his voice was awesome; didn't have to be mindlessly pretty but I think I'm not wrong that he had about a 4 octave range and adapted to each character he created.

  51. T.... P....

One of my all time favorite Tom Petty songs, and I have like 500 on my computer. :P Obsessive? Meh. A little, I guess. LOL

    T.... P....

Are you Jewish? I am (it's matrilineal). You picked a good thing to get obsessive about. It's my understanding that Tom Petty was unrelentlessly obsessive about his work, and the world is a better place for it. So was Peter Bogdanovich, who knew nothing about rock 'n roll and dedicated about 3 yrs I think putting together that brilliant doc. Runnin Down a Dream. In fact, nothing in my experience gets done unless someone is obsessive about a creative idea.

I admired Warren Zanes' bio which had to be written, and was written with full permission of Mr. Petty. I like the format whenever it's possible: George Plimpton turned it into a recognizable form when writing about Truman Capote. The oral biography: interview everybody, assemble a chronology and the unreliable narrators make themselves apparent, sometimes early on. (Stan was a shit disturber, I like the word in my language "emmerdeur"; same thing. But he had some really valid insights after the fact.) I'm thinking of Stevie Nicks, my sister's hero. It's really hard when those god(esses) have feet of clay. No-one talks about Paul Zollo's interviews. He had no ulterior motive; pure love of music and how great music is made. You probably subscribed to Sirius Channel 30, Petty's Buried Treasures. His music collection must be beyond counting. An extraordinary education, listening to that podcast. I read music (years of piano lessons) and love the anecdote of the cellist they felt they needed who arrived, never having improvised a day in his life. And the result was magic and he went home a happy man.

I haven't mentioned Tom Petty's death. Of course he should have died hereafter. I'm just glad he was in the world. And now I have to get a pesky cat off me because I really hate that excess heat. And what about my dog? He has to sleep in his own bed ... "like breaking up a dog fight, like a deer in the headlights, I'm losing my mind". Time to move on.

Tx for your post my friend.

    T.... P....

    evelyn baron wtf?

    T.... P....

Than you have good taste my friend. It's my favorite TP song of all times as well

  52. M.... O....

Yes, and don't forget "Something big" recorded about the same time 30 years ago and a really good part of his live show in 2012.

  53. B.... ....

The first rock song I ever listen in my life ... lots of memories :"-)
