When this song came out in '81, I was struck by how much Tom had grown as a songwriter. It wasn't just first-person narratives loosely based on events in his life anymore. He now could create mini-movies, four minute long books told in song. I was and still am impressed. It's held up well. Still sounds good; still tells an intriguing story.

It turns out that Mr. Petty was writing about more than what this song touched on; he was writing about his own mortality, his own passing. It is indeed "something big."

Tom Petty was in concert here a couple years ago.  I did not attend the concert, but I read reviews.  Tom played Something Big and commented to the crowd that this was one of his favorite song but he rarely gets an chance to play it in concert.  Love this song.

He used to play it in Stockholm One of the best songs ever
