Todd Rundgren - Something To Fall Back On Lyrics

If I gave you just a bit more time
Do you think that you would make up your mind?
You can't expect that a flower will grow
Until you get around to giving it more
Like it's only

Something to fall back on
Something to fall back on
Something to fall back on

Like a crumpled dollar hidden in your hat
For the subway home when there's no welcome mat
You'd be left with nothing if it weren't for that
When you need to find it it's right behind you

Remember when you were the talk of the town
And you didn't care if I was around
But still you kept me in the back of your head
Just like the teddy bear that you took to bed
I was only something to fall back on

And to wake up lonely is your deepest dread
So you stay connected by a tiny thread
Though you'd rather try for something else instead
When you need to find me I'm right behind you

I know I'm only
Something to fall back on

I don't know what makes me think I've the right
To tell you what is most important in life
But after all I guess I just don't care
And if you need me I will always be there
'cause when I just imagine how it will be
Then I guess it's something to fall back on
Something to fall back on for me

I need to know you'll need me sometime
Everybody needs somebody to fall back on
Fall back on me
Nobody's going nowhere
You can call me anytime
You can fall back on me
You can call on me
I'm waiting on you babe
When your world is falling down
And there's no one else around
And you're sitting, waiting by the phone
You can call me and I won't leave you alone

Todd Rundgren Something To Fall Back On Comments
  1. T.... ....

This man deserves so much more credit. This album was ahead of its century.

  2. O.... B....

This came out when I was 15, and there are parts of this song that had me wondering at the time if it wasn't Daryl Hall for a second. But though they sing with/in a similar timbre, Daryl has a more dynamic voice. Not saying Todd's voice is bad, it's just not an R&B divo's voice like Daryl's.

  3. B.... C....

Only Todd could get away with a mod-mullet with piggytails.

  4. G.... W....

For those of you who don't understand this kind of music, I grew up loving Todd and I still love him. Todd's a genius.

  5. I.... ....

incrível o uso de e-mu emulator na mímica de instrumentos. cada camada que você ouve é um produto modificado da voz do todd, até mesmo as palmas -- técnica usada depois pela bjork!!

  6. D.... M....

Oh man....another good song ruined by another idiotic video. Way too many of these for my tastes. I won't be able to finish watching this.

  7. A.... W....

    Give me a fucking break

  8. D.... C....

    Pure Genius!

  9. M.... K....

respect to the lyrics from multi talented muscian.

    d.... ....

    LOLOL .....

  12. d.... ....

I love how he used his A Cappella mask. His head is so tall it doesn't fit!

  13. H.... M....

How come this song didn't make at least a top 20 ?

    H.... M....

Bearsville Records held it back and didnt promote it. By the time Todd got out of the contract and signed to Universal, if I recall correctly, the album was treated as a novelty and not properly promoted then either. I'm honestly not blaming them for that one. This album is a little experimental for the public and this song is the only one that sounds remotely airable on the radio.

    H.... M....

This was his first album for the Warner Bros. parent label in the States after the shuttering of their imprint Bearsville (with a deal he had been foolishly trying to get out of), and the phrase "big fish in a little pond/little fish in a big pond" comes to mind. He was never a priority for Warner Bros. So he stopped having hits and his 3 studio albums there sold considerably worse than his Bearsville ones. The ugly video didn't help. Then again, his biggest hit of the MTV era, "Bang the Drum All Day," only had a live performance clip.

Hey, Todd! there is something as 'too much Amiga'

    L.... C....

Actually, this wasn't done with the Amiga but with the Fairlight CVI, or "Computer Video Instrument".

    L.... C....

@MidWest Concert Video How do you know it didn't think it was an Amiga.

    L.... C....

It wasn't an Amiga; this song and video were created in 1984 ... before the Amiga was even released (1985). Bearsville Records was going bankrupt and so they didn't release this in '84, knowing how experimental it was. So they sat on it, Warner Bros. swooped in, and it all was released in 1985. This song was released about a month before my brother's wedding; I took him out to the parking lot, we smoked joint, and I had him listen to it. THEN told him, "All vocals, no instruments." We listened to it three more times before his bride came out, all mad and shit .... lol.

  15. J.... ....

Todd is a freakin' genius. He did the whole album like this ... in 1985. 1985 --when people were still rubbing sticks together to get fire ... or practically.

    J.... ....

And, once more, 100% of ALL tracks, every instrument and vocals ALL Todd.

    J.... ....

    FUCK YOU

    J.... ....

Hardly. This was just another of the great records of the time. All voices, yep, cool. But to down play all the great artists to put todd at the top is just not correct. I was paralleling him the whole time... lots were.

    J.... ....

death2pc duh, if you know this album, you'd be aware, it's all vocals, ... even the drums.

    J.... ....

Bob Harley wow, what did I miss bob?

  16. S.... J....

Todd Rundren wrote and produced this song. He also sings backing vocals and provides the music by altering his voice with synthesizers.

    S.... J....

He used his voice entirely for everything on the entire album (A Capella), using samplers.

    S.... J....

The work of a true genius!
