Todd Rundgren - Real Man Lyrics

When I was a child
I thought as a child
I spoke as a child
I didn't know better
But now I'm a man
I look like a man
I'm old as a man
And I should know better
Got my head in the sky
And my mind knows what it wants
But my body just drags me down
And my world is something you can't see
But it's still very real to me
You can find it in the hole where I keep my soul
There it is - way down inside me
There's a real man
Forget about my body and be a real man

I see with my heart
I hear with my heart
I feel with my heart
Sometimes it works better
And some so-called friends put me down
And they pity me for trying
Bad emotions push me around
But the vision shines on and on
It will shine when we all are gone
And I'd like to add a little sparkle while I'm here
Light it up - way down inside me
There's a real man
Forget about bad feelings and be a real man

Some men's world is only hate and money
Afraid of everything and they laugh at nothing
And they only live to criticize
You can laugh at me now (ha ha ha)
But the time comes to everybody
When you must decide
When that day finally comes along
You might wish you'd been a little more strong
Then you'll wake up in the morning cryin'
"Oh my God"
There it is - way down inside me
It's a real man
You got to grow up sometime
Be a real man
Suffer them slings and arrows
Be a real man
Now be a real man
Don't sell yourself for nothing
Be a real man
Don't take no crap from no one
Be a real man
Get your trip together
Be a real man

  10. R.... J....

The best song Hall and Oates never wrote.
What a great song. Heard it back in 1975, and it knocked me down.
What a class act. Prince would have made a superb version of it.

  11. M.... S....

This Real Man can write a song n preform it.

    From 1 Corinthians 13:11

  22. s.... ....

Real man? All men are real. Just because you don't like a certain guy doesn't mean he isn't a man.

    s.... ....

sandinyourshoes you don’t get it sand in your shoes probably sand in your brain

  23. M.... E....

Why has no one mentioned how unbelievably 80s this sounds it’s blowing my mind

    M.... E....

    The drums do sound 80s.

    M.... E....

Just goes to show you can always hear the sound of the forthcoming decade somewhere in the current.

    M.... E....

    >Mr. Eighty: Sounds like late 60's early 70's to me. Drums sound like 60's Motown, 70's keyboard, 60's bass. The whole rythym sounds like 60's Motown.

    M.... E....

@Mr. Eighty the way you just put that gave me chills...wow, i never LISTENED to music in that manner..and i am a music freak...u jus expanded my hearing/listening with that statement

  24. f.... ....

this song is always in my head..at the bottom somewhere buried by more practical things. But it goes in and out of my ear somehow at anytime it feels like it!....Rundgren not in hall of fame...then there is no hall of fame..

  25. R.... W....

    What a perfectly performed somg

  26. B.... H....

    Brilliance 👌

  27. S.... C....

This should be a National Anthem for the Millenials!!!!

    S.... C....

Fuck the millenials. Lazy, disrespectful bastards.

    S.... C....

@John Dillon - Just what they used to say about us, John!

    S.... C....

    Who's the one calling names?

    S.... C....

There’s a few of them that have common sense, I’m younger than them. I’m glad I’m not with the retards

  28. S.... C....

Todd you have earned your "sparkle"while here on earth!!!

    S.... C....

    A REAL MAN!!! Thanks TOdd!!!

  29. J.... R....

Again, why is Todd Rundgren not in the rock and roll hall of fame? Why? The greatest musician ever.

    J.... R....

What? Are you serious he's as good as all 4 Beatles.

    J.... R....

The Rock Hall is a sham and I'm originally from Cleveland. Todd should have been one of the first ones ever inducted.Period Point Blank. Not even a question. He finally got nominated and didn't get in. This is even a bigger sham. One of the greatest songwriters as well as musicians of the last century.

  30. V.... B....

"Some man's world is only hate and money..." That is deep, Todd! That is so true! Echoes what we have today!

  31. j.... l....

    be a real man

  32. M.... R....

Man is as Real as he Perceives.

  33. h.... w....

    An American Musical genius.

    h.... w....

    right on

    h.... w....

MUST BE PUT IN THE R&R HALL OF FAME.

And how American he is. He was raised in Philly!!!

  34. m.... s....

Todd at his most Motown. Like so much of that music, impossible to hear too much.

  35. J.... R....

He walked the walk, and he still rocks.

  36. J.... M....

YEP THIS IS ALMOST BIBLICAL...FROM AN LSD POINT OF VIEW..LOL I HAVE A COPY OF THE LP FROM BACK IN THE DAY IN ORIGINAL WRAP!!! I LOVED IT!!!!

    J.... M....

It is from a Bible verse!
    1 corinthians 13:11

  37. R.... 8....

Real men are too far and few in between. Todd IS one.

  38. l.... ....

One of the great things about this song is that he walked the talk. It's hard not to love and respect him for his greatness and his humility.

    l.... ....

lebarosky very true. Too bad so many discredited him & his lifetime efforts for using his 1st ammendment right to criticize Trump

    l.... ....

lebarosky if that were true, then he is in good company with a huge host of celebrities who disagree with Trump's method of doing things- let's start with Steven Colbert and Bill Maher, as some great examples. The fact is when the ego is involved, it can't take the criticism, and shoots back with criticism of its own.

    l.... ....

I love how he mixes Psychedelic Soul and Pyschedelia Pop to perfection with a great message.

  39. D.... c....

    Rundgrenized

  40. T.... H....

all men should listen to this and become a real man

    T.... H....

No. A man is an adult male person. That is it.

    T.... H....

We are real men for listening to it!

    T.... H....

All people should listen to the lyrics and live the message.

    T.... H....

I'd rather go hunting or fishing then listen to you Ms. Hall.

  41. m.... ....

    kick drum anyone?

    m.... ....

    Great bass player here. Kicknotneeded

  42. m.... ....

    811 views? Seriously?

    m.... ....

11,821 now bro'. And darn well earned by the Godfather of Psychedelic Soul Prog Rock

  43. A.... F....

This is the first album I ever bought.

    A.... F....

Did you enjoy the "double album" aspect of the album, one great songs, the other pop electronics?

    A.... F....

Over the (way too many :D ) years since I bought it, I've come to really like the "Treatise.." side a lot more than I did on first listen, to be honest though, took me a while to really enjoy it. I remember the original liner notes said something like 'this LP contains twice the amount of music as a regular record, so crank it up' (the significance of which I probably couldn't fathom at the time). It's an amazing piece, a lot going on, always liked Todd's prog-ish excursions (The Ikon comes to mind).

    A.... F....

Talk about getting it right, the first time.
