Thompson, Richard - If Love Whispers Your Name Lyrics

Next time I promise
I will be ready
Ready to move when the clouds roll apart
Next time I promise
I will do better
When the sun shines on me and pierces my heart

If love whispers your name
Breathes in your ear
Sighs in the rain
Love is worth every fall
Even to beg
Even to crawl

I won't act so cool
I won't be the fool
Next time
And I won't quote the law
Won't be so sure
Next time

'Cause I once had it all and
I once lost it all and
I won't miss again
If the chance should come my way
If love should look my way

If love whispers your name
Breathes in your ear
Sighs in the rain
Love is worth every fall
Even to beg
Even to crawl

I won't act so cool
I won't be the fool
Next time
And I won't quote the law
Won't be so sure
Next time

'Cause I once had it all and
I once lost it all and
I won't miss again
If the chance should come my way
If love should look my way

If love whispers your name
Breathes in your ear
Sighs in the rain
Love is worth every fall
Even to beg
Even to crawl

Love is worth every wound
Each lonely day
Each sleepless night
Love is worth every wound
The price that you pay
To live in the light

Isn't it extraordinary that such an amazing musician should also be a brilliant lyricist?

----- If it weren't for genius creative masters like this who come around once (maybe twice) in a blue moon these days, I might not listen to 'contemporary' music AT ALL anymore... Such degeneration at the 'popular' level... Thanks, Richard, for the ray of hope you offer for true 'music' and those who appreciate it... BRAVO... ('shit-hot' SOLO, too...)

Within weeks of the UK release this song was accompanying the funeral of one of two "vieux aimants"
Neither of their families understood why two elderlies could be so bound up with each other. I hope this helped them to understand.

Only ever saw him do it solo which was lovely but I'd really like to see him do it with a band it really missed the electric guitar at the end superb thanks for the post

Welcome then! A treasure chest brimming with gold waits for you in his back catalogue!

RT is a living legend two times over--as a guitarist and as a songwriter. But the last time I saw him, it was at a glorified middle school auditorium in suburban Portland, Maine. And he came out to the lobby after his spectacular 90-min. solo show to chat and sign autographs! The man represents everything an artist--and person--should aspire to be. "Dream Attic", by the way, is an absolute masterpiece.

Of course this was never a common practice, and in the 50's/60's was mostly relegated to folk artists/groups. Every folk act of the period had to have one live album of exclusive material in their oeuvre. The Kingston Trio "At the Hungry i", Bob Gibson and Bob Camp "At The Gate of Horn", The Limeliters "In Person" & "Sing Out!" are sterling examples. So I wonder: Is this Thompson showing his folk roots?

Wonderful. It took me a while to understand why this is a live recording, but I remembered having read that this album was not produced in a studio. Some may not realize that there was a time when artists would debut new material before audiences and subsequently the recorded performance would be released in lieu of a studio album. This practice has virtually ceased altogether since the late 50's/early 60's. A lot of credit must be given to Richard Thompson for reviving the idea.
