They Might Be Giants Will You Love Me In December As You Do In May Comments
  1. A.... S....

Now, in the summer of life, sweetheart
You say you love but me
Gladly I give all my heart to you
    Throbbing with ecstasy
But last night I saw, while a-dreaming
    The future old and gray
And I wondered if you'll love me then, dear
    Just as you do today?
Will you love me in December as you do in May?
Will you love me in the good old-fashioned way?
When my hair has all turned gray
Will you kiss me then and say
That you love me in December as you do in May?
You say the glow on my cheek, sweetheart
Is like the rose so sweet
But when the bloom of fair youth has flown
Then will our lips still meet?
When life's setting sun fades away, dear
And all is said and done
Will you arms still entwine and caress me?
Will our hearts beat as one?
Will you love me in December as you do in May?
Will you love me in the good old-fashioned way?
When my hair has all turned gray
Will you kiss me then and say
That you love me in December as you do in May?

No one sang this song as Albert Cambbell (1872-1947). This vetsion give me nothing. When I hear this with Campbell I feel me blessed by God and get much of good feelings. This vetsion not give me that sorry. This feel only meaningless to hear for me.

Billy Murray fan this version's not supposed to be very emotional. The song's reduced to it's melody and lyrics and I like it like that.

I am interested in talking to you Brian, Jimmy Walker was my grandfather.  I wonder how we are related??

Check out the classic "Gentleman Jimmy" in the Broadway show "Fiorello" to see how cleverly the lyricist worked in Walker's themes.

my 3rd cousin. so cool to hear this

He was also known as "Beau James". There is a movie by that name with Bob Hope in the title role - a really incredible performance. I'm so sorry I never got to see "Fiorello". Is it available in some popular format, like DVD or one of the cable channels? My mother grew up in NYC and listened to "The Little Flower" reading the funny pages over the radio on Sundays.

@bobbiejeanne66 -- unfortunately there never was a movie version -- unlike most of the other big-hit musicals of that era, like "The Sound of Music" which shared a Tony Award with "Fiorello!" that year. And it didn't get a televised revival on PBS (so no home video "Great Performances" release), or even a retrospective documentary. As of 2019, many of the people from the original show are gone ... Hal Prince died this summer, and while Sheldon Harnick and some of the cast like Patricia Wilson are still around, they're getting up there in age and time is running out, if anyone does want to do interviews and collect some of their memories about the show. (Wilson recently published her memoirs, "Yesterday's Mashed Potatoes", with some interesting behind-the-scenes stories. For example, she noted that competing with a bunch of other hits that season may have had implications for "Fiorello!" -- they had been invited to do some scenes for the Ed Sullivan Show, but Sullivan retracted the invitation after the actors singing "Little Tin Box" asked for more pay, saying he'd approach one of the other hot shows instead. This means that there's very little surviving TV footage from the original Broadway cast.)
"Fiorello!" does still get performed occasionally. Not as much as other shows (compare with fellow Tony/Pulitzer winners like "1776"), but I've found mentions of at least a half-dozen runs by community theatres, schools, etc. over this decade. Often they're concert versions which don't have a full cast and are using a shortened script that I think the son of one of the original writers edited. (That was the format used by the shows that were closest to me, in Vancouver and Edmonton -- and I missed them because I had no idea they were on.) For sure I would go to even a shortened version because I haven't seen the show yet either!
Here's the website of the company that licenses the performing rights -- I checked the "Upcoming" listings and didn't see any for the next few months. But maybe something will come up soon. Especially with the increased interest in politics as we head into another US election year.

I haven't heard any definitive explanation about why there isn't a movie version of "Fiorello!" -- it did have stars (it arguably was Tom Bosley's big break) and Howard Da Silva who played Ben went on to appear in the film version of "1776". Some people have said that LA-based studios may not have felt audiences outside of NY would be interested in La Guardia's personal story. But the musical did pretty well on tour, and Fiorello himself was widely recognized across the US. (Admittedly he's less famous now than when the show first came out, since many of the people old enough to have voted for him or listened to him reading the comics on the radio are elderly or dead. Though a lot of New Yorkers at least recognize his name, because of the airport, college, and performing arts school.)
This blogger has written a summary of the musical and inserted links to YouTube clips of the songs, to give an idea of what the whole show is like.

And this video has some excerpts of the songs from the 2013 concert version in New York. Too bad there doesn't seem to be a complete video of the entire show available. But it's better than nothing. It also includes the new song that Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock did for the show -- they felt that Fiorello's character in particular needed a song to explain his feelings during Act II (I didn't realize it but the original show had been written with an actor who couldn't do much singing, that's why Fiorello doesn't have a lot of songs -- and by the time they decided they'd choose Tom Bosley instead, it was too late to change.)

  9. l.... ....

Bootleg! I had an old tape bootleg, and that was how I got it.

  10. H.... ....

first heard this version in the 90s....sometime in the 90s.

but now, i want a copy of this and the release it was initially on, House of Mayors, if i'm not mistaken.

does anybody know how to get a copy of it? thanks.

Gorgeous rendition. Linnell's vocals have never been so heartfelt and passionate. His contribution to "Darlin' Allison" certainly is up there as well.
