They Might Be Giants One More Parade Comments
  1. I.... R....

Where did you get the recording for this song? I can't find an audio-only stream anywhere.

  2. L.... l....

Hup, two, three, four, marchin' down the street
Rollin' of the drums and the trampin' of the feet
General salutes and the mothers wave and weep
    Here comes the big parade
Don't be afraid, price is paid
    One more parade

    CHORUS
So young, so strong, so ready for the war
So willin' to go an' die upon a foreign shore
All march together, everybody looks the same
So there is no one you can blame
Don't be ashamed, light the flame
    One more parade

Listen for the sound and listen for the noise
Listen for the thunder of the marching boys
Few years ago their guns were only toys
    Here comes the big parade
Don't be afraid, price is paid
    One more parade

    CHORUS

Medals on their coats and guns in their hands
Trained to kill as they're trained to stand
Ten thousand ears need only one command
    Here comes the big parade
Don't be afraid, price is paid
    One more parade

    CHORUS

Cold hard stares on faces so proud
Kisses from the girls and cheers from the crowd
And the widows from the last war cry into their shrouds
    Here comes the big parade
Don't be afraid, price is paid
    Don't be ashamed, war's a game
    World in flames
    So start the parade!!

  3. t.... ....

In my TMBG playlist with the original version. Thanks for the upload!

  4. m.... ....

I've finally made it, everyone! Someone else took this exact same song and made a video with some of the exact same footage I did. I find the coincidence quite intriguing,@malcolmreynolds99- mine was made 30 April 2003, the day before we invaded Iraq.

  5. C.... P....

Great cover of one of Phil's songs. Be sure to check out the Celebrating Phil Ochs' 75th Birthday Facebook page and the Celebrating Phil Ochs website.

  6. B.... R....

I can't believe how much the 2 cd set goes for online. So thanks for posting up this song. One of the more obscure tracks by TMBG.

  8. Z.... B....

Hey nice job. Found this looking for something appropriate for Memorial Day.

  9. k.... ....

This is cover of Phil Ochs song.

  10. K.... ....

    thank you <3

  11. T.... ....

This, is an amazing song. Why is this not a hugely famous song?

    T.... ....

because Phil Ochs wrote it and he was "a radical" or so they said.

  12. M.... ....

People say they want war to end, but with the right motives, anyone would start one.

    M.... ....

Nope. For what's worth, pacifists do exist.

  13. k.... ....

    Only to cowards!

  14. N.... G....

@loerandloer i think it has a strong political message

  15. N.... G....

i cant believe that some people dont understand this song

  16. 1.... ....

    WTF happened to the audio?

  17. a.... ....

Phil Ochs was a loser, but the day he and Marvin Gaye got married the trees all waved their giant arms.

  18. 1.... ....

    Who stole the sound?

  19. C.... ....

War it stupid. The leaders get elected to govern the people to a prosperous life, instead they make the citizens into pawns in a large game of chess. The only difference is, sacrificing a few pieces means a few human beings get murdered.

  20. o.... ....

The audio still plays in 240p...

  21. m.... ....

    there is no audio

  22. m.... ....

    @beanodonnell Nope.

  23. b.... ....

am i the only one who feels empowerd and get a good feeling from this song?

  24. T.... ....

It's hard to believe only 60,000 people have viewed this video. :(

  25. r.... ....

Great cover -- so wonderful to hear Phil's music being kept alive, it's all too relevant.
Here's to the day it won't be!!

  26. F.... ....

it is a shame, they all look the same. It makes you feel better about shooting someone different than you when they look the same as the thousands of other asians shooting at you. sad sad thing war is.

  27. p.... ....

that whole thing was a pump and dump. there was money in their pockets, and more coming in but I'd hardly call it sustainable. like using water to lubricate metal- it may go smoothly for a bit but wait till it rusts.

  28. K.... ....

    Er....say WHAT?

  29. b.... ....

"Death has a tendency to encourage a depressing view of war." -Donald Rumsfeld

  30. J.... B....

Okay.I really no nothing about Germany
pre-WW2, I just found it funny that people were trying to excuse Hitler be reffering to economic reform.

    J.... B....

    Look at Turkey now.

  31. K.... ....

@ConnDevi88: A 25-second clipping of the original you can hear here:
    mog(dot)com/music/Phil_Ochs/There_But_for_Fortune/One_More_Parade

  32. K.... ....

Hitler's so-called "economic reform" simply based on a gigantic rearmament programme, fed by debts and robbery. By 1939 Germany's economy was totally ruined and he needed the war to cover it up.

  33. m.... ....

its a phil ochs song, the 1st track on his
1st album, "all the news thats fit to sing" but do yourself a favour and buy all his albums! he was something special phil ochs. all the best pal.

  34. K.... ....

Genocide tends to take away from economic reform :P

  35. J.... B....

Ah...."The good men do is often buried with their bones." or something. Hitler's ecnomic reform,as positive as it is, will for centuries be soon forgoteen when we rember the the ireedemble acts of genocide he condoned. Great at public speaking though!

    J.... B....

What is it worth when everything the people worked for was made for the war which destroyed it all again..?

  36. J.... B....

very well. I commonly refer to that as republic, but I see no reason to argue over names, as long as the understood system works the same

  37. K.... ....

That's not Democracy. That's Direct Democracy. Democracy is when you vote for a Senator,Mayor,Representative, and president (like we did)

  38. J.... B....

No, I have not heard that phrase during the revolution. Democracy means you vote directly for everything, this we do not .

  39. K.... ....

No not rally we are a Democracy. Have you ever heard the the phrase "Democracy now! Democracy Forever!" during the revolutionary war? They weren't fighting for republic they where fighting for Democracy.

  40. J.... B....

No, Captialism is the concept of competing sellers, although you are correct Socialism is a governing system (Not to be confused with Communism)
    A modern democracy is Switzerland,
while we are a republic with democratic lenencies.

  41. K.... ....

I'm not trying to define the word republic. I'm saying that we are a Democracy not a Republic. And capitalism is. With Capitalism the government does not hand out free health care and let citizens die and fail to their own extant. And Socialism is a Governing system to.

  42. J.... B....

    Utopia's by definition are non-existant
Capitalist is an economic not governing system. Hate to burst your bubble but it appears you have the definitions backward (your current definition of a "republic " is actually a pure democracy).

  43. M.... D....

Actually we -are- a republic. A democratic republic, because if you look at our systems of balance, the people do not elect the president and originally did not elect the senate. The people only elected the representatives on the federal level.

We are not a "capatailist democracy" whatever that is. Capaitalism is just something we used to embrace, not something that is the name of our government.

The actual name is a Federal Republic, that is what we are.

  44. K.... ....

We where never a republic. Just because it says "Republic" in the pledge doesn't mean that. A republic it's generally a bloated democracy where people can vote for laws, military action, and any other action the government is going to take. Anyways we are a usually classified as:

    Capitalist Democracy
    or

    Capitalist Utopia.

  45. M.... D....

Actually, the people who fought for "our right to vote", believed in a voting system where the people were restricted. The Electoral College votes for presidents, and actually, if they wanted, could vote entirely different than their "pledge".

We are -not- a democracy in America, and never have been. We are a confederate republic, and the right to vote for your state legislature and district congressmen is good, but vote for the President or a Senator is really not a good idea.

  46. K.... ....

Finely somebody who understands the word fascism on you tube! Anyways i agree with you .

  47. K.... ....

Generally he was a good leader. Besides the whole Ethnic Cleansing part. He lead Germanys terrible broken economy into a super power. And he promised that so technically he didn't "Con" anyone.

  48. x.... ....

TMBG IS good! Why are they "emo" for making a song about war? This is a very, very, very NOT "emo" song.

  49. M.... D....

If it was because he went jail.. he was in jail for trying to forcefully take over German parliament. It wasn't so much a 'cult' but a Workers Party movement, that ended up becoming Fascism.

Hitler wasn't the worst of the Nazis, and to think they were 'easily led', you should watch the world today!

  50. C.... H....

actualy, you should still go to vite. even if you jsut deface the slip, you've had you're say.

  51. T.... ....

That's a great thing about America. You have the right to vote and the right to not vote.

  52. m.... ....

youre entitled to your opinion pal, and i for one will stand up for your right to be wrong. better people than you or i gave their lives for the right to vote, if you dont want to use yours, fine, thats your democratic choice, but remember the people who fought for your freedom to choose and a big part of that was the right to vote, if you want to insult their memory by not even bothering to vote all i can say is shame on you, remember there are people in the world still fighting for a vote.

  53. C.... ....

You can make a difference, but not by voting, bro.

  54. m.... ....

" it is good fortune for governments that people do not think" - ADOLF HITLER

to stop madmen gaining power you must think and question everything, the next time you hear "i dont vote, what difference does it make". from someone, tell them how dangerous that attitude is! I think phil ochs would have loved this cover of his song, its fantastic, he spent his life saying to people YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

  55. R.... B....

not in his opinion he mustve thought we were insane since he was trying to 'cleanse' humanity

  56. M.... ....

what we might call bad? i do agree he was quite a persuasive leader although he was fucking insane

  57. P.... ....

lol uhm yeah id def say it was very "bad"

  58. V.... ....

wow, this was great! Only the 2nd time I gave vid with dead kids 5 stars.

  59. B.... L....

It came out around 1990 -- it was on an Elektra compilation. Then-Elektra artists (like TMBG) covered songs by former Elektra artists (like Phil Ochs).

  60. A.... M....

Thanks, Phil. Thanks, John and John.

  61. s.... ....

TMBG are citizens too? They've got a bunch of songs from other eras like this, if you look through all the stuff they've released.

  62. B.... S....

Referring to all the sh*t going on now?

  63. V.... M....

IT's not so much as an "emo" statement as a strangely true sentiment of militarism. What's more, it's actually a cover. The original was written in 1964 by Phil Ochs, when people could make rather dark claims without being dismissed as "emo" because it didn't fit with someone's sunshiny perspective.

So there you have it. It's a protest song which uses sardonic humor as its tool of realization.

Not everything is ponies and rainbows, you know. ;)

  64. A.... ....

    It's tragidorable.

  65. a.... ....

seriously kick ass song, right at the end they should have done some sorta heavier breakdown like thing. But still awesome tune

  66. m.... ....

    What were you looking for?

  67. D.... ....

As if I haven't posted enough about the things I like about this, I like how in the beginning of the song, the pictures are all of happy, anticipating soldiers, but as it progresses, they get more and more downtrodden and depresssed.

  68. D.... ....

I agree. I find the exaggerated cynicism of the TMBG version is much more powerful than the straightforward depression of the Ochs version.

  69. R.... S....

The last time I saw TMBG in concert they gave a little speech on them not liking Lou Dobbs. It involved Lou knocking on their bus asking to be let in and a response of "No, Lou; go away and take off the Walter Cronkite mask."

  70. D.... ....

Because illiterate and pointless comments annoy everyone, as do those that leave them. Plus, this is a very serious subject matter.

  71. T.... ....

Intelligent discourse happening all by itself is rare on YouTube, theonly44552. Don't spoil it.

  72. J.... S....

The added synthesized brass and higher tempo does make it more "march" like, which to me makes it feel more like a parade(or even a circus). I think TMBG's version emphasizes the irony by being more "upbeat". John sounds more like he buys into what he is saying, which I think is deliberate.

Its difficult to describe, but I feel like TMBG is taking the situation and saying, "Look how absurd this is."
Phil Ochs more stark version takes the situation and says, "Look how terrible this is."

  73. m.... ....

Yeah, pretty much, but I'm usually one who employs understatement in regular diction!

  74. A.... P....

    Yah like all the time

  75. A.... R....

Didn't The Else come out this year? Or was it last year?

  76. d.... f....

have they made any new albums

  77. j.... ....

    BEST. FAN. MADE. VIDEO. EVER.

    srsly, good job.

  78. p.... ....

Just record your computer's sound while playing the song.

  79. P.... ....

    nice.
I just recently found out he did the theme song fro Pee Wee's Playhouse and many other things in TV.

  80. A.... V....

This song is amazing, it really has truth to it.

  81. m.... ....

That video is amazing....but here's something interesting: Jerry Casale of Devo is one of the biggest names in advertising. If you notice, Devo songs are used in a lot of commercials. I suspect he's wisely cashing in on his own band wherever he can. It's exactly what the message of De-evolution intended. I consider the man a genius!!

  82. m.... ....

War is war, whether it's civil or with us. Innocent people die over power control. Before this war, Iraq and Iran hated each other and that was sort of our safety net. Saudi Arabians attacked us and suddenly we were at war with Iraq, aggravating Iran, and making a mockery of our global "policing skills." We have nothing to be proud of regarding this war.

  83. m.... ....

Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely take it in mind when I work on the 2.0 version of this - if I ever get a chance!

  84. m.... m....

Iraq was on the verge of civil war before America went in; okay. They're a shitload closer now. Plus all the other countries are really angry.
Good video; I'd probably cut down on the appearances of Hitler, though. He's a bit obvious, and excessive references to him can corrode the argument.

  85. B.... L....

Oh, so THAT'S why we invaded a country that posed no threat to us -- and not because of WMDs, democracy or nonexistent ties between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. Thanks for clearing that up. If I could twist like a conservative, I'd be dancing on Broadway.

  86. C.... Z....

Are you serious? We're lucky we intervened when we did. Iraq was on the verge of a civil war, US forces are keeping Iraq stable, and stopping Iran from doing anything. Should we not have invaded, Iran could have sent in its military and its influences throughout Mesopotamia/The Middle East, and establish itself as a lone, renegade hegemon, leading to the genocide of any that oppose them. That'd be millions. Get a fucking clue you liberal jackass.

  87. m.... ....

    We're all Devo

  88. b.... ....

    that was great!

  89. E.... T....

Thank you. Jeez, I was looking for that. I figured it was on their first album, 'cause that was the only one I didn't have, but I finally found that one, and it wasn't there. I was distraught.

  90. D.... L....

Dulce et decorum est, pro patria mori.

  91. c.... ....

Great vid! Ochs would have loved it!. War is no joke!

  92. M.... R....

TMBG covered Phil's "One More Parade" on the Rubaiyat compilation. The song wasn't on any TMBG album.

  93. P.... ....

    Well done!

  94. r.... ....

Sardonic, is what i would use to describe this, a dark video coupled with dark, sarcastic lyrics, gotta love tmbg

  95. M.... W....

"war is supposed to be horrible, that's the point." what kind of bizarre logic is that? can we not find some sort of alternative solution than "WAR,WAR,WAR! KILL IT ALL!"?

  96. m.... ....

HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH Alright, you are officially my friend.

  97. m.... ....

HAHAHHAAHAAHHA bravo, Recreant! Well, I'm no Bush administration fan and I didn't vote for him, but I'm less of a war fan, no matter what era. I thought making a movie with graphic, vintage footage would show the timeless horror of what sacrifices people make and how we package this into something "positive". It was really difficult to make this little movie.

  98. N.... D....

Its not from any album its just a random song they have a bunch of those.

  99. m.... ....

The song itself is a Phil Ochs tune from 1964, but They Might Be Giants are a modern band. I'm not sure what album this is from, though...

  100. m.... ....

I thought I'd stick to WW2, but you just gave me an idea for a scathing sequel...!
