TesseracT - Of Matter - Retrospect Lyrics

Burning bridges as I cower beneath
Trying to salvage the debris
My devotion tied around your waist lest you fall
no one seems to sense the strain
No one seems to know

I don't begin to proclaim that I know
I can't continue down this road

Dwelling on what has come to pass
no force alive will bring it back
I would know
I can feel the pressure getting steeper with every life lost
You hope that I won't see the light of day in time to come
With no conviction founded
Just judgement contorted based on lust
Give me strength
Your assumption brings to a conclusion of no consequence
and I refuse to play into your hands for your appeal

Inadequate, Inadequate
I know
I know
I know
I know
I've hoped
I've hoped
you'll see me

TesseracT Of Matter - Retrospect Comments
  1. H.... -....

Daniel and Ashe really have that vocals that could fit in well with TesseracT

  2. G.... G....

You know a song is good when people comment different parts of the song being the best.

  3. D.... W....

I feel like I get they lyrics, but what exactly are their meaning?

  4. S.... S....

One of my fave Tesseract songs of all time. Perfect example of what Tesseract is if you wanted to demo to someone not in the know. Love the way it builds up Love those chiming guitar tones and haunting vocals.

  5. Z.... S....

love the octave transition on the bass 3:07

  6. O.... G....

Going crazy every time I think that an incredible riff like the 1:06 one is used ONCE in this song.they are genius

  7. L.... L....

3:46 Freaking amazing, I love this band...

  8. M.... R....

2019 anyone? This song is a masterpiece.

i live in chicago. this song will always have a special place in my heart. i remember it was christmas eve , i just started a job at a grocery store in chicago in 2014 working overnights (10pm to 7 am) they failed to tell me that we had christmas eve off. i remember being the only one in the parking garage for my job, 15 minutes early, not a single car or soul around, i texted my boss and asked whats the deal he said its paid time off, enjoy. just as i read that text 3:26 in the song sprang up and i looked up from my phone and knew it was complete silence, a blizzard was happening. i stayed in that parking garage for an hour watching the snow fall and enjoying this song in one ear but hearing complete silence and wind whipping past in the other. anytime this song plays thats the thought i have,

  12. V.... L....

  13. M.... M....

  14. B.... C....

4:03 is my favorite. I love the melody.

  15. L.... C....

    4:05 Tool influence for sure

  16. S.... S....

2:08 sounds like dream theater's stream of consciousness

  17. J.... ....

I love how big the bass is on this track especially

  18. m.... ....

Can someone tell me what time signature 1:06 to 1:34 is? I don't think that math has been invented yet.

    m.... ....

martini1179 time signature in that part changes almost every few seconds... just incredible

    m.... ....

martini1179 it's actually just 4/4. The riff is so crazy it seems like something else. Listen for the snare, it is always on the 3 like a normal halftime groove. Crazy huh?!

    m.... ....

    Twice Triplet 11/4 + 8/4 + 9/4 Time Progression, Or in Compound Time 33/8 + 24/8 + 27/8

    m.... ....

It's literally just 4/4 in triplet feel lol

  19. S.... P....

    i love this goddamn song

    D.... ....

Devourthythrone They're beautiful lyrics, and the delivery is spot on.

    D.... ....

    Thank you ❤

  22. C.... F....

Oh Man! The 4:43 is so damn killing.....!
    Totally Eargasmic...!!

  23. Y.... D....

Gives me chills. Second favorite to Resist

  24. A.... ....

the part at 4:00 makes me scream of joy

  25. M.... C....

    3:50.... epicness explosion.

  26. L.... T....

    tiiiits

  27. g.... ....

Apparently this is an "angry" song. :P

    g.... ....

+ganondorfchampin 1:05 riff sounds very sinister

    g.... ....

    +RBLangR i know

    g.... ....

It's not THAT sinister, it's also rather funky.

    g.... ....

    +ganondorfchampin i know

    g.... ....

@Dim Papanick Though the song is cited as making people happy. :)

  28. T.... ....

I just can't get over how "random" this drummer is.  Obviously it's not random, it isn't even the most ridiculous or most technical stuff but it's so unpredictable when he accents sometimes.

    T.... ....

postones recording some with a pad and put they put the rest in with midi. i have seen them quite a bit, i think how he internalized these songs and changed them is even more impressive than the original writing. plus you can tell in the original writing that some of it would be reaaally awkward to play with certain accents that he uses

    T.... ....

From what I've heard, he doesn't even know the time signatures to the songs. My only gripe with him is that he is a cymbal hog.

    T.... ....

    P o l y r h y t h m s

    T.... ....

Andy McLeod have you heard Between the Buried and Me 's drummer?

    T.... ....

You should watch his live streams on here and twitch, he goes over it and you can hear what goes on in his mind during this very cool

  29. h.... R....

Son excelentes músicos espero que sigan así, como banda.

  30. C.... ....

    So fukkin' good.

  31. J.... L....

    One of my favorite songs.
Just posted the first bass cover of this with TABS on my channel. Check it out!

  32. A.... S....

As a musician I have a huge appreciation for amazing harmonies, and these guys have it all, technicality in the Djent genre, beautiful harmonies, dynamic buildup, and my favorite part is no screaming (maybe thats a personal thing)

    A.... S....

@Theodore Schantz @AddHazers Though I personally enjoyed Dan's screaming on One, I have good news for you guys! I've read interviews where the TesseracT guys have said they probably won't have any screaming at all on the next album, and even in live shows Dan has been letting Mos do the screaming for some of his old parts, which means Dan is probably moving away from screaming and focusing on cleans!

    A.... S....

@InfamousPillarKid What sucks for me is that I really enjoyed Ashe on this album and I do not like his other stuff for some reason. Not his solo stuff, and especially not his stuff on Voices from the Fuselage. Ashe and Tesseract created something truly special with Altered State. We'll see how it goes from here.

check out this site and see what you find.
this band is Russian and very talented.

    A.... S....

Spandan Madan check out dead letter circus. Pretty neat band!

    A.... S....

Screaming is just a way of using your voice too. The same as the difference between dark, metal-y chords or a bright lead melody on e-guitar

  33. D.... L....

My favorite part is definitely 3:18 on, such a small buildup and pause, but once the instruments drop after 3:26, it's such a powerful little shift in the song.

  34. i.... n....

i'm confused. i love love love this guy, one of the best male clean high registers in business but i can't fucking stand djent. HALP! fans, lend me a hand, any albums with lots of stuff like this?

    i.... n....

+Bevan Dsouza if you want a less heavy or metal approach listen to white moth black butterfly

    i.... n....

my collection is basically everything between ambient on acid and low-fi bm. everything is fine if its good. will check now ty :)

    i.... n....

I know this is from a year ago, but this is not the guy who sang in Skyharbor. Dan Tompkins USED to sing in Tesseract before Ashe (the guy you hear now), and rejoined after Ashe left. He also sang in Skyharbor.

    i.... n....

Ashe has his own project called Voices from the Fuselage... its a little less djent.

    i.... n....

Caligulas Horse, pretty much anything off in contact

  35. D.... W....

They are so amazing live! Many feels, such tone, much prog.

    D.... W....

indeed saw them in cologne! nailed it!!!

    D.... W....

Yeah man, got to open up for them on the start of the Altered State tour, such an amazing time.

    D.... W....

@Danny Whitt i just noticed i read "such amazing time"

    D.... W....

Haha, I had to re-read what I wrote after you said that.

    D.... W....

Mediocre singer. No one can perform what they record for some reason. The albums are great. But they aren't replicated live. And he uses prerecorded layers for harmonies, mainly the higher ones

  36. M.... ....

Love the feel to this its awesome !

  37. K.... K....

    3:18 so much power

  38. M.... S....

    goosebumps

  39. E.... t....

TesseracT- the masters of the subtle build up.

    E.... t....

@ProjectONI616 GYBE are the true masters for me. This track is great regardless

    E.... t....

Ever the Outcast I'd give that title to Tool. Check out Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2. Tesseract is awesome at it though.

    E.... t....

lol why would you compare post rock to metal?

  40. D.... ....

This, ladies and gentlemen, is music that can heal a broken soul...

    D.... ....

+Adrian Jones Its a good way to look back at any disappointing aspect in life. Lyrically a phucking tear jerker. Instrumentally a great headbanger.

    D.... ....

    nice one haha

  42. G.... ....

The whole song is like a gentle progressive lullaby. The few times I played it, me and the bassist were always waltzing left and right. The rhythm compels you to. And the melodic members in the band are almost like rocking you to sleep.

  43. S.... B....

you know its good music the break in the song sends shivers down your spine
    1:02

  44. B.... W....

Absolutely brilliant song. So profound and haunting

  45. I.... ....

2:30 .. the soundscape he creates with his vocal harmonies is incredible

    I.... ....

@blindox Yep Yep, take it from an engineer.  That stuff is the work of the man behind the board.  It is fantastic though.

    I.... ....

I'm also an audio engineer. I know what you are saying but, Ashe wrote the vocals. Who knows though, maybe the engineer suggested the harmonies. Either way, it's been written and it sounds fantastic.

    I.... ....

@InceptorEyes I've done some audio engineering and from what I can tell, all that's been added is a slight echo and some gain and EQ to fit in with the guitar sound, though I might be wrong.

    I.... ....

    @InceptorEyes
Just heard them live the other day, with Dan as the vocalist though. He delivers Ashe's perfectly written vocals even better than the author himself. Absolutely incredible. The soundscape even works with him as a solo vocalist :)

    I.... ....

I just discovered this song and I totally thought this was a woman singing.

  46. M.... C....

Oh my god that vocal thingy at 4:50

    M.... C....

    the vocal thingy

  47. M.... ....

    dat bass! love that sound

  48. J.... C....

Why aren't bands like this in the top 40????

    J.... C....

@TopixSorin haha i do but thats not all i do when i listen to it, i like to sit down and really focus on it is what i mean ;)

    J.... C....

Around here, Tesseract seem to confuse most people. I got it first listen!! Beautiful sounds

    J.... C....

@blacktherion23 Don't wanna sound mean but you basically said that popular bands are popular because they're popular.

    J.... C....

+Jonathan Carrier Because in the top 40 people make music that other people want to hear. And these guys make the music they want to hear! Nothing better then creativity coming straight from the soul and not just from the wrist.

    J.... C....

Because they don't contribute to delinquency, ultimately setting up the second civil war/WW3

  49. M.... W....

So much feels. I get goosebumps every time.

  50. Q.... S....

    nice...

  51. T.... S....

    Phenomenal everytime.

  52. M.... ....

Great, great Work. Beautiful and magnetic Sound.

  59. M.... F....

This is 10/10 this whole album gave me hope for humanity srs

  60. P.... E....

I think that this song could be my favorite one of entire album, and one of my favorites of whole life. Great album.

  61. B.... B....

too bad it's perfect and has no holes.

  62. D.... C....

Dude! You hit the nail on the head like epic, or what!
    Awesomeness!

  63. M.... _....

    amazing album. amazing band.

  68. l.... ....

lucky U good SOnGS onlly make it worse 4 me.i hope i join u later on.thx goodlife.

  69. A.... S....

I wouldn't say REAL music, since everything is subjective, but i must admit, i am falling in love with this band. Their rhythms and melodic vocals are so ethereal and leading, and it takes me to a whole other place.

  70. m.... a....

    this is real music.

  71. E.... E....

    DAT lyrics dude!

  72. 6.... ....

    I wish you well, man.

  73. N.... L....

one of the best albums released this year, well, probably ever...

  74. D.... P....

Tessaract is a excellent band with two albums go very well.....................

  75. W.... ....

And that :-D awesome. Meshuggah is also very proficient with polyrhytms but jens' growling tires me after listening to it for a while. Not to say their music isn't awesome, though.

  76. S.... C....

thats also a bit of polyrhythmic beats

  77. A.... ....

Since the government makes laws.. they abuse it and think they own everyone.

Some people think because they listen to Tesseract, that they're better than anyone else. While that is true...... just because you listen to complex music doesn't mean it's better than anything else lol

  78. A.... ....

musical elitism is congruent in the same sense as intelligence. You could listen to metal and be pretentious about it, or you could be open to all other genres.

Just like being intelligent. You could be a smart-ass or be open to other peoples ideas

  79. C.... ....

The entire album is flawless in my opinion!

  80. K.... B....

    Fuckin totally dude.

  81. K.... B....

    fuckin totally.

  82. D.... V....

If this song had a hole, i would put mi dick in it <3

  83. W.... ....

That syncopation at 2:05 is golden

  84. Z.... ....

    Awesome! (?)

  85. i.... ....

In iTunes I cut the song in half at the odd break (sounds like should be two songs at that point). So now I have Of Matter- Retrospect and Of Matter- React.

  86. C.... C....

    its progmetal (djent)

  87. C.... ....

I would agree, but show a song like this to the majority and they wouldn't get it... especially songs with screaming in it, most people judge it as shit because they "Can't hear the lyrics". It's just popular culture. So in this case, I say fight fire with fire ;)

  88. t.... ....

I will gladly listen to TesseracT and then listen to One Direction right afterwards. I'll jam to Selena Gomez in my car then go home and listen to Between The Buried And Me. Knock it off with your pretentious musical elitism, because it isn't wanted here.

    t.... ....

    thisisjayse
    nobody cares

  89. R.... h....

    thats fairly pretentious

  90. T.... ....

    Awesome as fuck.

  91. W.... R....

    Lightening force

  92. C.... P....

This song actually made me count.....haven't been counting in a long time ;)

  93. k.... ....

epic sound epic song = magnificient !

  94. i.... ....

This is beautiful. When one is listening to it you get so many mixed feelings. Yet it seems perfect. Favorite song? I think yes.

And it is a nice fresh change to see civilized viewers.
