Tedeschi, Susan - Soul Of A Man Lyrics

The soul of a man touches something inside of me
Something too deep for anyone else to see
And the whole world wants to know, why I love him so
But I'm afraid, oh they just wouldn't understand

My love for a man is something I can't explain
And every tear that I shed, I know it's wasted in vain
But there's something I can reveal, that I so deeply feel
And it must be, oh it's got to be, the soul of a man

I cried and I cried, 'til I just can't cry no more
I know the man don't love me but he won't let me go
He controls my heart, my mind, and my soul
And he's got the power to make me stay home
When I really want to go

Soul of a man turns my mind around
And takes my helpless heart and turns it upside down
And the whole world wants to know why I love him so
And it must be oh, it's got to be, the soul of a man

There's nothing better, than a cold, dark rainy day, and Susan Whaling!nHer voice Warms ma' Soul!

  3. R.... C....

this is not a cover of the Blind Willie Johnson song, despite the title.

  4. D.... M....

Now I know why Derek married you.

  5. T.... M....

I thought she has blonde hair ?

  6. s.... ....

Such a talent. Almost prefer her solo stuff to Tedeschi Trucks simply because they use all the back-up singers; don't need it with her voice, although I do love Derek's slide.

  7. j.... ....

I liked her better before it was Tedeschi-Trucks. It seemed like she did better tunes in those days and we didn't have as many needless slide guitar solos from Trucks. Not that they are bad now but the song selection was better when she was solo.

  14. J.... T....

hey darling :-) have you stop music ??? there's no new video on your channel since 8 years...

  15. r.... ....

I first head this around the mid '60s as Fontella Bass's B side to the single "Rescue Me". Not many folks would be wise to cover it, but Ms Tedeschi more than does it justice. I'm really glad she did it. Now maybe more folks will become familiar with it.

    r.... ....

Many don't even know Fontella Bass

  16. J.... T....

At 3:50 Susan just digs into a note like she was born with a guitar in her hands. Then a fabulous little arpeggio run. She plays. She sings. I would wash and wax her guitar cord just to be in the same stratosphere for a few minutes with her. People compare her to Bonnie Raitt and Janice Joplin. Bonnie doesn't sing anymore; just talks through the lyrics. Joplin had a higher "scream" but Susan beats the other parts of anybody. Watch the Red Rocks video. She gets off some stuff that will make your hair stand up.

  17. S.... B....

Susan if this isn't a TRUTH SONG Hell I haven't known One Thank you 🖤💙

  18. M.... R....

You wouldn't think she ever would be without the live if a man with that voice, sexy woman.

  19. J.... T....

She deserves more respect in the music world than she gets. This woman is AWESOME! Have listened to her for a long time!

  20. R.... M....

Nice recovery from that flub @3:52 at the end of the solo and I liked the acknowledging smile she gave afterward, just before she started singing. It happens to everyone. :)

  34. T.... C....

What a shitty noise that guitar makes.

    T.... C....

+mbsnyderc So was that a yes or no? Do you have the qualification to criticize someone who is more successful than you in music or any other talent?

    T.... C....

+Tmw Camden prove you have any success in Music out side of your inflated ego.

    T.... C....

+mbsnyderc First, (if anyone is still reading...) the bottom line here is music is an art and taste is personal. Not everyone is going to get it. Like my neighbors playing rap at full blast most of the afternoon- they were partying but I found it obnoxious. But I have lived the blues so will always love playing and singing like this (if in fact there IS anything anywhere else today like her)...

But for the guitar critics among us, first can anyone identify the make? It isn't any of the common LP & LP- knockoff brands like Gibson, Guild, Epiphone or Gretsch. I already checked. So that could account for the sound variation.

Still, that said in the lower ranges it has a distinctively-authentic blues quality. Only above the 12th fret does it get a bit plucky.

In other performances she is seen playing the more-familiar (and much brighter-sounding) made in USA Fender Telecaster (with single-coils, not outsourced either like so many now) the preferred choice of many top musicians including Cheryl Crowe. Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Hilton Valentine and almost every early blues player I can think of. Go to another vid of her and compare. (You can even see it on the stand behind her in this one.)

It isn't so much any lack of talent here but most likely some marketers got to her and sold her a B-brand with lots of window-dressing (flame top & fancy inlays) but with perhaps less-impressive electronics. If so it wouldn't be the first time. The wannabes so covet celebrity endorsement. But am only guessing here.

    T.... C....

    @Bill Fife
It's a D'angelico I've seen it played live it sounded fine to me, she is mostly playing a 1970 Strat these day's,but i have seem this guitar pulled out for some songs.

    T.... C....

+mbsnyderc OK thanks! Am always open to competition in the industry and reviews by those with knowledge.
I think she picked this one not because it had perfect tone but because it sounded more like authentic down-home blues. After all most real blues artists didn't start out rich. Thanks for the info.

  35. r.... c....

Never ever lets us down ,DA Best!!

  36. e.... ....

  57. C.... H....

I just want to point out that she was born November 9, 1970.... Janis died October 4, 1970... Sounds like someone didn't wanna stay homeless energy...

  58. k.... ....

    <3 bb <3

  59. R.... G....

Amen, them two need to take it out back to the alley. Any bouncers in this club.

  60. R.... G....

Sounds to me like she was just going for a different tone and sound than your typical wailing away blues solo. Pulled it off pretty good, there was a brief moment near the end where it sounds like she got her fingers tangled on a couple notes.

  61. D.... R....

Oh lol, shes still very much around! On quite frankly the best Blues Band in the Land.

  62. M.... B....

DUKE AND FERNS......BOTH OF YOU GIRLS ARE PRETTY ...SHUTUP..IM LISTEN TO MUSIC

  63. A.... R....

I was being sarcastic you pompous jerk. Anyway, since you seem to be the authority on Tedeschi's "talent", I defer to your bad judgement. I've spent enough of my precious time replying to your stupid comments. I'm moving on with my life and suggest you do the same and stop harassing people whose opinions are not the same as yours.

  64. A.... R....

Sister, insulting me is not going help you prove your point. Yes, I find her vocals abrasive. That is MY opinion. You may not agree with it. Yes, I have listened to blues and all the artists that you mention. NO, I do not find them abrasive. What do they have to do with Tedeschi anyway? What a childish argument! Now please go and spew your petty, resentful insults on someone else and leave me alone.

  65. A.... R....

What is wrong with people like you?Why do you find it so hard to accept that someone’s definition of talent may be different from yours.Do I make you justify your poor taste? So why do you feel threatened that I don't agree with u?OK if it makes you feel better,Tedeschi is the epitome of talent-she has single-handedly redefined blues. She puts E Fitzgerald to shame with her breathtaking vocal abilities & puts Clapton to shame with her stupendous soloing. There,I have conformed & I am now one of you

  66. S.... L....

wow!! to jimmydriveby and asslesha fernandes (that is what your name should be!) i would like to ask you all to put some of your music on youtube so we can see how much better than susan you are. She was a known artist long before she married derek!! I have seen her live many times and she is amazing! Her vocals are abrasive??? Have you ever listened to blues before?? Etta James, Koko Taylor, Janis Joplin, guess their vocals are too abrasive too!!!! HATERS!!!!

  67. s.... ....

Look at her face after her solo and you can see she's not too happy either. Her voice was in fine, fine form though.

  68. A.... R....

You didn't have to make this personal. But since you felt the need to feel better about yourself by demeaning me,i'll clear a few of your misconceptions.I am a musician too so don't lecture me about performing.I don't listen to Bieber.I have seen this lady perform live& its clear that she has got this far by riding on her husband's coattails. Her singing was abrasive & her guitar skills non-existent.Now you go off &listen to this torture while I put on some Albert King & listen to some real blues.

  69. E.... D....

What a voice. How long you been playing, jimmydriveway? 15, 20, 25 years? Would have been 9 yrs for ST, if she learned in 1995. She recognizes it wasn't top shelf (check the smile at band) and she is humble about her lead skills. You, however, come across as a frustrated/jealous third-tier musician. I'm sure friends at the pub are amazed by your elegant solos. (comment about Derek is goofy too = DT would "pick up slack" for nearly every guitarist on the planet.)

  70. A.... R....

If people think this woman is talented then there's no hope in this world

  71. R.... M....

    The new queen of blues!!!

  72. j.... ....

damn man, i agree. that solo was pretty bad. shes married to trucks. she can sing good enough for the both of them, but hes gonna have to pick up the slack on guitar.

  73. h.... ....

Arrgh...what can you say about this. Susan is such a crazy great talent I can barely sit in this chair!!

  74. R.... W....

I just wish she would not try to play blues guitar. Her voice is so fine; why must she masquerade as a blues player?

  75. J.... M....

To ask why people seem to prefer something ordinary to something great, is in no way insulting to great stuff.

  76. J.... M....

For the same reason that children prefer picture books to fine literature.

  77. C.... D....

Only the comparison is pretty insulting :P

  78. W.... F....

She is just getting started; on the road to becoming one of the greats

  79. S.... S....

    completely disagree

  80. V.... R....

I agree she sounds a lot like Miss Bonnie Raitt, though there are times when she really belts it out and sounds a more like Janis Joplin

  81. V.... R....

LOL...yea she's certianly not one of the greats, she married one though!

  82. V.... R....

Each to their own friend, each to their own

  83. T.... G....

    montel on keys, nice

  84. V.... ....

    that's pretty bad ass.

  85. e.... z....

    bravissimaaaa
