Tammy Wynette - Dancing Your Memory Away Lyrics

It's Friday night you must be alone
That's the only time you ever phone
But if you drop by don't be surprised
Cause darlin' I won't be there tonight

I'm dancin' your mem'ry away in the arms of a stranger
For now I'm okay my heart's out of danger
Tonight while I'm waltzin' as the band softly plays
I'm gettin' by one song at a time dancin' your mem'ry away

Once twice tell me how many times
Was I a fool for your lyin' eyes
But I won't be your fool anymore
At least not while I'm out on the floor

Dancin' your mem'ry away in the arms of a stranger
For now I'm okay my heart's out of danger
Tonight while I'm waltzin' as the band softly plays
I'm gettin' by one song at a time dancin' your mem'ry away

Dancin' your mem'ry away in the arms of a stranger
For now I'm okay my heart's out of danger
Tonight while I'm waltzin' as the band softly plays
I'm gettin' by one song at a time dancin' your mem'ry away

@kaylynn1986 That's great that your mom sang this song in Nashville. Sorry you lost her. I know how that is. I lost my Mom in 1992. But she got to see a little of my success. She had a copy of the BMI award for this song on her wall.

Our publisher Dave Burgess played it for Gene Ferguson who was Charly's manager and the rest is history. Norro Wilson produced a great session with Nashville's best musicians and singers. It's been recorded over 30 times and has sold over a million copies world wide. You would not believe the doors it opened for Tom and me. We won 2 BMI awards, one Pop in Beverly Hills and the other for Country in Nashville. Nice 30 year ride.

Thirty years ago next month my partner Tom Grant and I went into a basement writing room at Merit Music on 18th Ave. in Nashville at 10am and by lunch time we had this song. The next day we demoed it with me on guitar my wife Pat McKinney singing and Tom doing harmony. I played it that night for Paul Richey, Tammy Wynette's brother-in-law and he asked for a hold over the weekend. She recorded it for CBS records a few weeks later. When they made the decision to hold it for the second single......

I wrote this song with Tom Grant in 1981. My wife Pat McKinney sang the demo it's been recorded by about 30 artists world wide . I think it's ready to be a hit again. What do you think?
