Tallest Man On Earth, The - Sagres Lyrics

We were travellers, so blind
Went to where the world did end
Read of deaths in waves and out
So this is when we walked away

And the sadness I suppose
Gonna hold me to the ground
Where I'm forced to find the still
In a place you won't be 'round

Was I ever part of knowing
With your hands in mine
Little screams into the wonder
And a wild set of rides

Come on, come on

And so here I go again
Say I want my freedom sure
But it's like end of all the dreams
Like in my life I needed more

And this madness I suppose
Gonna haunt me with the line
That I could drink until I sleep
Through all scarier times

Was I ever part of knowing
With your hands in mine
Little screams into the wonder
And a wild set of rides

Come on, come on

Now was I ever going to be more than these savages in me
As they will sing into silence, just to silence tears
Now what is left in here?
It's not the sting of cities flickering in life no
It's not me knowing there's a deeper in the dust no
It's not the reasoning with shadows that are gone no

It's not me knowing I'm yet to see fire
It's just all this fucking doubt

Come on, come on

And this silence I suppose
Gonna hold me to the ground
Where I'm forced to find the still
In a place you won't be 'round

Tallest Man On Earth, The Sagres Comments
  1. Scott Oglesby

I love this song. I love Sagres beer. I am grateful to have grown up with many wonderful Azorean, Portuguese, and Lusophone neighbors to teach me about tasty and wonderful things from their spot. I love this song. I love the tallest man on earth.

thanks everyone who made this song happen. Thank you to the person who uploaded it! thank you to the folks who made the guitar! thanks for the people who made the computer it eventually was digitized onto. Thank you Kristian!

Sagres is a place in Portugal where a school of navigation was located during the Portuguese age of maritime discoveries. And I can't help but suggest the connection between that fact and this song "we were travellers so blind, went to where the world did end". Or maybe it's just a huge coincidence.

  9. Sagerz

  28. Raymond Gobbis

    I like this unique effort......Sweet....!!!

  29. Alexandre Jones

First time I heard this, I didn't like it much... too smooth compared to The Wild Hunt.

But then on about the third listen, it happened...  this song gave me the chills.  Hair on my forearms standing on end.  Total goosebumps.

Right now this is my " sound of the Summer 2015..."

I've probably listened "Sagres" 100 times in the last month.

Thank you, The Tallest Man On Earth!

    Tack!!!

  30. Sebastian Perez

Que buena canción me encanto 😀

  31. Nigel Carleton

    The Dylan of our times

  32. Miguel Costa

"Sagres" is a portuguese beer. What's the meaning in this song?

    Madeira Island

  33. Tim Kopp

sounds a little like Tom Petty/ Bob Dylan??

  34. Stephen Croes

I saw him last night in Boston.  This song is a highlight but the whole show is magnificent.  Incredible band, great arrangements, gigantic energy.

  35. jalexabaar

does anyone know what "sagres" means?

    Madeira Island

@jalexabaar Sagres is in Portugal, The Westerner point in Europe, it's linked with the Portuguese Sailors who discovered half of the world in the 16th Century...

    The Foreigner & The Filipina

@Madeira Island Also, beer. but its not relevant to this song. also, Sagres isnt as good as Coral ;)

    José Rivera

+jalexabaar people believed that Sagres was the end of the world or at least the known world, how cool is that idea after discovering all the rest of it!

    Madeira Island

    +Nomad Moto Indeed :)

  36. Mark Zucco

It has a little George Harrison sound.

  37. graniteiii

All 10 tracks are "magnifika", can't wait to listen the album on vinyl when it arrives from the post :-)

  40. david letterman

Am slowly putting my finger on this.  This song is a mixture of TME and a few Springsteen songs back when he was legit (The River and My Hometown most prominently).  I wonder what Bruce would think of this.  His influence is quite palpable.  PS I love the song.

  41. david letterman

This is a breakthrough song.  TME has taken a giant leap in a new but authentic direction.  I don't know if the rest of the album sounds like this or will measure up to the quality of this track, but I certainly hope so.  This new vein is a rich one and will hopefully be fully explored before he moves on to the next.

    Luca Lavarini

    @david letterman oh god why

    david letterman

@Asdfasdf Asdf Adolph, go back to bed, for good.

  42. Benjamin Brown

"Drink until I sleep"...I don't particularly care for alcohol but clandestine subterranean based landlords hack (via synthetic telepathic/neuro-impulse weapons) me incessantly. You see, in Grants Pass, OR there is a huge base underground and in order to be "unclipped and unpinned" (eye clipped is when they place bio-neural intra-ocular tech behind the eye and remotely view through you) and "pinned" is a neck bio-tech chip. And they terrorize your mind and body.  Obama does nothing.

  43. Edwin Brown

What do we think of the change? I really like it. I love that he can be so versatile and isn't afraid to venture out of the style of his previous albums. His voice always brings me back to why I love TMOE. I'd love to hear any thoughts.

  44. ZombieKilla

Oh yeah.... this is totally "weather worn"

  45. TheGroovyMuffin

Almost tempted to sing "my hometown" over the top of it during certain parts

  46. Michael Gregurek

This song kind of reminds me of Like the Wheel

  47. Lorne Malvo

    Nice, sounds like The Pogues

  48. Michael rieck

There's something about this song, that makes me listen to it on repeat 24/7.

    Tammy Doherty

Same, me too! It's addictive. :)

  49. Alex Kessler

i honestly think this is kristian's best song. such a beautiful melody, such passion, such poignant lyrics, such lush production, such a phenomenal vocal performance...that gorgeous bridge that culminates in him saying "it's just all this fucking doubt" with so much pain and longing. and this song, in my opinion, is just on a completely different level from the artists that people have been comparing it to - war on drugs, tom petty, bruce hornsby, bruce springsteen - i appreciate each of those artists, but none of them has a song quite like this.

    Tyler Rice

I agree! I love his music, but this is one of his top songs for me. I love it. :)

    Alex Kessler

@Tyler Rice glad to hear it man :)

  50. Brent Palucki

Look up the official lyrics if you haven't. Really beautiful.

    Alex Kessler

@Brent Palucki they are so beautiful.

  51. Antonio Barroso

    Great!!!

  52. Gus del rio

Reminds me to the cure maybe?

  53. MsMaddieLongLegs

Reminds me so much of Phosphorescent!

  54. Alvaro Marcolino

Come to Brazil, Kristian! Brazilians needs urgently to see your show around here.

  55. Chris Burn

Just discovered this guy thanks to wxpn. Music sounds like Springsteen.

    Dale Gribble

    That was my first thought

  56. kimbit 89

Took me a second to get used to this new style, but i'm loving it now. Instant playlist song, and although the lyrics are a little more muffled than usual, they are still stellar, as usual (I admit I looked them up). I particularly like the "It's just all this fucking doubt" line. There's something kinda rare and awesome about a poetical, lyrical, genius swearing.

  57. Matthew Putt

I am in love with this song.

    Alex Kessler

    @Rambeard me too :)

  58. Paul Scannapieco

Love it, so excited for the album

  59. Brian Oestreich

"This is my hometown....myyyyyy hooooommmmetown..."  ;)

Love The Tallest Man on Earth!

    david letterman

@Brian Oestreich You nailed it as well! It is a combo of My Hometown and The River (and maybe a few other Bruce songs).

    Håkon M

    And Brilliant Disquise

  60. Joel Fortier

sound like the war on drugs !

  61. billygoatredemption

Jason Bentley & KCRW brought me here!

  64. ALEX GIBSON

i love Kristians work, this guy has a powerful soul.

  65. mikebiketrike

What the fuck is this...? hmm No travis picking..

Mann this album might suck if it's going to be like this.. I hate when he makes these songs.

  66. tycho

I'm getting strong War on Drugs vibes from this. Very nice!

I hope there are some guitar-heavier tracks on there too though...

  67. Stephen Mozier

Shades of Springsteen's "My Hometown" and Tom Petty, but a song with beautiful, heart-felt lyrics and a gentle percussion.  I find myself playing it over and over!

  68. matsy17

I love this song and his new sound. Can't wait for the album in May and in October I'm seeing him live 😃

  69. RVAHIPHOP

    great sound!

  70. RVAHIPHOP

i have tracks for really cheap...just wanna get heard, thanks!

  71. Fábio Silva

Why the name Sagres? I'm Portuguese and Sagres may refer to the name of a very pretty portuguese village in Algarve, or to a portuguese beer. Is the name of this song related to any of these two?

    Manuel Campos

+yellow otter Sagres não tem apenas esses 2 significados. Na verdade, D.Henrique construiu uma escola de navegação chamada "Sagres" de onde surgiram os navegadores e os navios para a descoberta de metade do mundo , que até então, era desconhecido.

  72. Virmir

A huge change but I think that he will switch around between the two styles, I love this song just as much as every other TTMOEs songs :) Cant wait for the new album :D

  73. dakotaz

Can't wait for the new album!!!

    criBaroque

Brett, youre so fking good person.

    Evilfox

Dakotaz brought me to TTMOE, seen him in downtown Orlando....GREAT SHOW! Cant wait for him to come back

    1994goro1994

@Evilfox Fox I heard him in Dakotaz stream first but Sp4zie actually got me to listen to him.

    Guilherme Silveira

+Dakotaz i just bought a ticket to watch the TTMOE live in Lisbon. Dakotaz got me addicted

  74. Liliana Leal

    Finally news of TTMOH 😭!

  75. Ross Rohan

Does he do a pared back fingerpicking version of this track (haha), because from a massive TMOE fan of a fair few years, sorry, but this marks something of a low point for me. As said before, this sounds like Springsteen, or Tom Petty, which definitely isn't such a great thing necessarily. It just sounds bland, very bland, and fails to show off one of his best assets, namely his incredible guitar playing and that particular brilliant style. I'm praying his new work isn't all in a similar mode.

  76. Remy Chevalier

Lots of people channeling Tom Petty these days, aren't there? Still... A great song.

  77. ALEX GIBSON

    better than ever ^-^

  78. Dustin Richards

Started crying half way through. Straight raw emotion pulled right out of source and channeled through a beautiful being.

    Mercurydylan89

I had the same thing happen. Totally agree.

  79. Chase Fiebig

A bit of a Shins influence, eh?

    Alex Kessler

@Chase Fiebig i totally hear that

  80. Rodrigo Monteiro

wonderful song, the kind of melody Bruce Hornsby would die for.

  81. Lucas Tormin

When I found out about the new album , I was really excited. I've always appreciated his unique lyrics and guitar work. Personally, I dislike the changes. I prefer Kristian + his guitar instead of these new stuff they added... However, I still trust him and my hopes are still high for this album. That man is really talented , I'm sure there will be great things in his new album !

  82. Augie090

What a BEAUTIFUL!!! song. Heard it in the car while driving with my nephew today. Really love those lyrics he speak's of. Just gets me thinking. It's so interesting how music can explain how us humans feel sometimes : )

  83. Josiah Shank

this definitely has a War on Drugs feel to it. While I prefer his older lo fi albums, this is really good. I like that he is trying to branch out and sound different while not sacrificing quality. There has been a progression toward this in his music, but TMOE doesn't half ass anything. Can't wait to see him in May.

  84. Andrea Lucchi

    I missed his music

  85. imalazynub

The vocals are way too quiet.

  86. Lukas Gadelha

    I love this new song!

  87. Manuel Betancourt

I'm loving the change! A bit of Kurt Vile going on and that's never a bad thing...I'm loving this <3

    Kurt Duvel

    Ahhh man, great observation!

  88. mikael appelkvist

Love his music...but wish he could change studioproducer....almost every song sounds better live! Yes and I also think the music is to loud on this track, hard to hear every word! I think he is wasting his chance to sell many more records, sadly!

  89. Eric

Music is so Irish, I love it.

  90. Guillaume Ricard Svensson

Not as lo-fi as his other stuff. I think it's better this way.
Reminds me a LOT of The War on Drugs' "Lost in the Dream" (the album).

  91. FriendlyFantom

    Aww Shieeeet

Jamie Brown what song? I can't think

  93. MichaelHortonEsq

This is absolutely glorious. Underneath all that lush instrumentation it's still unmistakably a TMOE song. I love it so much.

  94. andyhounddog

    Didn't expect this...but loving it! :-)

  95. Nicklaus White

Different and spectacular to put it simply.
