Switchfoot - Looking For America Lyrics

[Lecrae & Switchfoot:]
Land of the free, home of the brave
But Lord knows that we need plenty change
‘Cause plenty chains in the past leaving deep scars
But when the sun come down we gonna be stars

The doors are locked where they once stood open
A wound of fear where we once stood hoping
The shattered glass where the bullets broke in
I'm looking for the place that I was born
I'm looking for a way to fix what's torn
I'm looking for America

I'm looking for America

Yeah, you know
Beaten red white and blue for the green we pursue
I’m still looking for you

[Switchfoot:]
America who are you?
Underneath the red blue and white?
America who are you?
I wonder who you are tonight
America who are you?
Is God still on your side?
I want to see a nation rise above the fear and fight that haunts these streets tonight

I'm looking for America
I’m looking for a place to breathe in
A place I could call my home
I’m looking for America
I'm looking for the land of freedom
A place I can call my own

I’m looking for America
Headlines that I can't believe in
But I'm still holding on to hope
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for America

America who are you?
Am I asking for too much
America who are you?
Has your dream become out of touch
America who are you?
Do you get what you deserve
Between the violence and entitlements
Which nation do you serve?

I'm looking for America
I’m looking for a place to breathe in
A place I could call my home
I’m looking for America
I'm looking for the land of freedom
A place I can call my own

I’m looking for America
Headlines that I can't believe in
But I'm still holding on to hope
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for America

I’m singing
Farewell my utopia
Farewell my euphoria
Fare thee well my suburban day-dream
Farewell my utopia

[Lecrae:]
America you so pretty
But you not perfect
Confession of guilt is worth it
These people hurting deserve it
Blood on your hands I saw
When there’s blood on this nations floor
But it’s blood on the upper post of your door
If you need to know

I’m looking for your honesty in skeletons
Do away with your ignorance and arrogance
America the land of immigrants
Check the green card and pedigree
Bless the Choctaw and the Cherokee
That we’ll never see

[Switchfoot:]
I'm looking for America
I’m looking for a place to breathe in
A place I could call my home
I’m looking for America
I'm looking for the land of freedom
A place I can call my own

I’m looking for America
Headlines that I can't believe in
But I'm still holding on to hope
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for a miracle
I'm looking for America

[Lecrae & Switchfoot:]
The land of the free, home of the brave
But Lord knows we need plenty change
I’m looking for America
Plenty chains in the past left deep scars
But when the sun come down we gonna be stars
And may the stripes heal when it’s through
Beaten red white blue for the green that we pursue

I’m looking for America

I have a Learning Disability and the government only supports the mentally ill. I can't graduate because I literally don't understand math nor english. "..because you can get a job" that's careless talk. I have had problems at home because I COULD'NT move out. I can get a job but not fairness. I want to earn the same as how someone in a career. Freedom and Equality. He's looking for America. God Bless.

America who are you? ..A place to breath in! ..AMERICA!
AM i ASKING FOR TO MUCH?
..you so pretty but not PERFECT.
    - sandra a.
America LOOK at me in the tumb!

OBAMA JUST had a heart. He never cared for me... I'm going to die.
    ..I thought he was BLACK.

It's amazing to me how many people seem to misunderstand this song as some kind of blindly patriotic anthem. If you actually listen to the lyrics, it sounds more like they are grappling with the fact that there has been and is still a lot of injustice in America, but this is their home nonetheless. They are looking for the people, looking for healing, looking for change. They don't mention any parties or candidates because this song is looking deeper than that. I see people using that as an excuse to group all candidates together, remind everyone of their imperfections, and point toward God and a generally need for change, but that is a massive cop-out. We should be looking at every candidate and comparing their stances to what we know to be right. We should be voting for candidates who are fighting for justice and love. This song isn't endorsing anyone. If anything, it is reminding us that we need to love each other and work to heal the wounds of this country that we call home.

i can't help but feel like the 'california brainwash' politics etc has influenced this band/song .... but hey keep Jesus #1 is the main thing !

    S.... ....

    agreed!

  8. S.... ....

The first time I heard this song, I was hit by how ballsy and confident it was. Even knowing Switchfoot and their fight to stand for what's right no matter what, I still have that feeling. Thank you so much, Switchfoot.

    S.... ....

    They are amazing like that

  9. B.... K....

Nice tune but I still would vote for trump over Hillary. You obviously are expressing a political opinion. Trump is expressing people coming to America illegally. People are not listening to the whole message.

  10. G.... A....

I don't usually use this word....I find it unusual.....it is used rarely......but this stuff? This is SHOOKUM!

  11. V.... t....

This song is dopey and naive. No country is perfect not even America, no one I know has ever said that it was. People still complaining about slavery and systemic racism are ignorant, those things are in the past and are not coming back. Sure individual acts of racism still exist and will always unfortunately, but to say that America is still a racist horrible country is ignorant. Most of the world out there is nowhere near as free as America. You want to see slavery? Go to Lybia for one, they are selling African slaves for around $400 US.

    V.... t....

It's not the past. Police are private security are still brutalizing native Americans to put up the pipelines at standing rock (stock in the company that owns the pipeline is owned by trump) , they scaled back the bear ears monument, which is sacred Native land they'd been fighting for a generation, to expand uranium mining, which is already poisoning many people in the near bye reservations. The united states has the largest prison population of any nation overall, that's not per capita, it's total. Are you naive enough to think all of them are guilty? The 13th amendment prohibits involuntary slavery... except when your convicted of a crime. Ex slave states immediately took advantage of this - charging black people with ridiculous crimes like vagrancy for being homeless and putting them to work in chain games. replace the old excuses with the drug-war and the same thing goes on today
Free, or nearly free prison labor is hugely profitable both to the state and to private prison owners, Slavery still exists in America it just changed form. Land of the free indeed.
I find the comparison to Libya to be true. For all our wealth (wealthiest nation in the world, about 30% of worlds total gdp) power, science, we have the morality of a third world war torn desert country.
You just don't see it because you don't care enough to pay attention to any suffering but your own." Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be."

And the second with someone with any conscience like Jon criticizes this you get all defensive and insulting.
If we keep needing to hear about it its because we keep fucking up. You remind me of the slavers Abe Lincoln talked about who wouldn't be happy until everyone else will "cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right."
All you care about is being able to go about your day without having to here about how our current system is hurting, Well too fucking bad.

    V.... t....

You have a lot of free time don't you?

    V.... t....

    Yep.
And doing this stuff is how I choose to spend it for some reason.
    pretty pathetic, isn't it?

but honestly I enjoy starting arguments.
and What do you expect me to do? To find a healthy, self improving and constructive hobby?

    V.... t....

Might be a change of pace.

If you do I recommend programming and/or painting.

God bless America. in Jesus Christ almighty glorious name.🌅

  16. S.... M....

Two of my favorite artists do an amazing collab I have one question for switchfoot. What made you think of lecrae for a collab?

  17. W.... A....

These guys do sound great together, but I wish Switchfoot hadn't gone political. We already have plenty of celebrities telling us what stances we should take, and Switchfoot makes great music without taking sides.

    W.... A....

Maybe so. He does have a habit of making analogies that aren't always obvious at first. That song still has a great guitar part.

    W.... A....

@Soniccaleb I think Politicians are about politics and various other things but I agree that a Switchfoot song normally does not mean one single thing. However, I would be cautious about putting a wing or party to a band unless the outwardly say so. I'm in support of not boxing Switchfoot up and I'm not saying that you are but just be cautious.

    W.... A....

But...also the opening lyric, "The doors are locked where they once stood open...the shattered glass where the bullet's broken" about the inner city, black crime, and how can it be fixed (as well as "between the violence and entitlements..."). So the song is relatively balanced. Although I did not like the song at all. Not a fan of rap. But liking it more over time.

    W.... A....

Rap can be hard to grow used to. Along with electronic and metal. It's very turn offish and hard to listen to at first but when you know the history of rap, you learn to appreciate it more. It was never supposed to be about money, sex, and ego (same can be said about rock) but it was supposed to be about social justice, equality , and giving attention to things that were not talked about. Of course the topics and purposes go beyond that but I'm just giving my perspective of what got me in and that it wasn't Switchfoot's inclusion of Lecrae.

    W.... A....

I think Switchfoot did a great job with their political choice, especially recently. I think that this song allowed them to use their celebrity name, in order to not take sides, but instead show a viewpoint from someone who hates politics, and show that they find America is acting foolish. Truly, we are looking for the America that the founding fathers wanted, and each day we get further and further from that. So this song should be spread allover, and should be a wakeup call for those out there that are foolish, and acting in ways described in this song.

  32. J.... W....

I have been waiting for this. Thank you. :)

  33. N.... C....

How do you look for something that never truly existed?

    N.... C....

I can see you're trying to be deep but I have no idea what you're trying to say

    N.... C....

@Nick Dasher There was a never once a "good" America. It never truly existed is what I think he's trying to say.

    N.... C....

It's an ideal that we have always fallen short of realizing, but we saw the value of the ideal, strove toward it, and slowly got closer to what we should be. But at some point we began to doubt that the ideal was even a worthy value. We put up cynicism and self-hatred as a virtue and bought into the lie that our ideals were all just a smokescreen to justify our own attempts to gain power. When we "look for America", we can put the ideal back up on the pedestal where it belongs while recognizing the many, many ways we have always fallen short of it.

    N.... C....

Nairo Camilo that's a truly naive and simplistic analysis of America. America was founded on the principles of freedom and liberty for all, sure it's had many stains on its history throughout the years, but it is closer to any other nation in that regard. Why do you think you have people flocking from all over the world trying to come here?

  34. C.... D....

    me gusta 😁

  35. J.... V....

Lord knows we need plenty change.

I think it's about time we prayed for change as opposed to looking for a politician who''ll give it to us. I mean, there are folks who supported Obama hoping for change, we're coming up to the end of his 2nd term and things have changed, but not for the better. Now there are folks who support Trump for the same reason. Things will change if he gets elected, but will it be the change we're looking for?

    J.... V....

I'm voting for giant meteor, ha ha get it?
    True though I mean that

    J.... V....

time to get back to the basics. God, family, faith, country.

    J.... V....

I think Trump's legacy will be bringing a Conservative Supreme Court Judge into the fold. There are two spots open, and Trump needs to put two Conservative judges in them to shift the balance.
