Sundy Best - Mountain Parkway Lyrics

A tin roof on an A-framed house
A barren field with a horse and cow
A wide one room church where people say their vows
Naked trees and evergreens
A hitchhiker walks in holey jeans
A big yellow school bus is loaded down with dreams.

I drove for miles, this is what I've seen
Yeah, I've gone to all these places, like a door without a screen
I've been to Nashville, through Bowling Green
Yeah, there's nothing like the lines that run, from here to one-fourteen
If the road was a song, this is what it'd say when you drive the Mountain Parkway
Yeah, when you drive the Mountain Parkway.

The wooden crosses and exit signs
The road contruction's faded lines
A place where all of these flat lands turn to mountain skies
An old barn where tobacco hangs
Farms where folks were born and stayed
And every house that I pass by has a worn flag that's raised.

I drove for miles, this is what I've seen
Yeah, I've gone to all these places, like a door without a screen
I've been to Nashville, through Bowling Green
Yeah, there's nothing like the line that runs from here to one-fourteen
If the road was a song, this is what it'd say when you drive the Mountain Parkway
Yeah, when you drive the Mountain Parkway.

Yeah, I know it like the back of my hand
Yeah, we're close just like a kin
I could drive it with my eyes closed, but I wouldn't want to miss
At mile marker twenty-two, where the hillsides show their face, right there, on the mountain parkway.

I drove for miles, this is what I've seen
Yeah, I've gone to all these places, like a door without a screen
I've been to Pikeville, route twenty-three
Yeah, there's nothing like the lines that run, sixty-four to one-fourteen
If the road was a song, this is what it'd say when you drive the Mountain Parkway
Yeah, when you drive the Mountain Parkway

Nick and his family are honest, hard working and inspirational people. I remember running track in high school. Sometimes when we would travel to track meets, Nick would play guitar and sing on the way to the meets. Tremendous and gifted artist. Sunday Best is Awesome!!!

This brought so many memories up for me. I'm surprised I had never hear this before! My father was from Pike Co. and I have all these now-idyllic memories of driving from Richmond, through Irvine, then to Clay City where we'd stop sometimes for gas or a Coke, then get on the Parkway. Back when it had tolls, I remember as a young kid it was so fun getting up in the front seat so I could throw the coins in the plastic "basket" at the toll booth. I would anticipate the next toll booth so I could do it again... Then, when the Parkway ended in Salyersville, there was Druther's/Burger Queen and their delicious fried chicken and potato wedges. Then, we'd travel on toward Prestonsburg, passing that once-great "cultural institution," Marlowe's. From there, it was only moments to Pike County. There are so many small touchstones from those trips I remember that this brought up such as all the swinging bridges that used to be between Prestonsburg and Pikeville off of US 23, the numerous barns with Mail Pouch or Colley Block signs painted on them (some still stand), that crushed blue, late 70's - early 80's car the huge boulder fell on that sat like that for at least 20 years, the Christmas lights and the one house with the quarter-mile driveway that was lighted all the way up to the house, seeing the mountains lit from behind you by the setting sun, the fall color, marking distance with the signs for Dwale, Allen, Banner, Ivel, Tram and Coal Run Village--each one bringing me a little closer to my mamaw's fried apple pies; and so many more. The road is still the same, the echoes of the memories past are wearing a little, and there are a few more McDonald's along the way, but that same draw of home continues to resound. Thanks for this song!

I was born in "67 and have traveled the Mountain parkway since I was old enough to remember. My mom, papaw, granny and I would Go visit family using the Mountain parkway. It lead us to Dayton Ohio, and Battle creek Michigan. I remember when it was a toll road, and mom would let me have the joy of throwing those few coins into the basket at the toll booths and hear the ding as the signal light turned green, telling us we could continue our journey for a while longer. At the end of the Mountain parkway, a series of rumble stripes alerted us that we had left the remnants of the mountains that we loved and would soon be entering the big city of Winchester, Lexington, then eventually we would cross the bridge into Cincinnati where the Ohio river, and Riverfront Stadium, the home of our beloved reds would welcome us. Thank for the memories Sundy Best!!! Can't believe I'm just now hearing about you guys. Your guys cover of Tina at the teardrop inn lead me hear. Can't believe I'm just now discovering you.

I will never forget driving that highway in October of 2017, it started raining with the heaviest downpour I have ever experienced, less visibility than a lot of snowstorms I have been in. This was in the Stanton area. When it stopped there were rainbows galore. This highway is already gorgeous but when you add rainbows it is a just a million dollar sight. I love the mountain parkway.

Good to see some boys from back home making it somewhere. This song plays in my mind every time I head home from school. The sights on the Parkway are amazing and it feels great to see those first set of mountains. Very welcoming. Lets me know I'm almost home. You can take to take a boy from the mountains, but he will always find his way back. Hope to see you guys live soon!
