Sundays, The - Leave This City Lyrics

Gone forever, the writing on the wall
they've boarded-up the cinema
strawberry dreams and the dust-filled beams
shut down in a modern town

see you walking, see you talking

recollection on streets you used to know
forgotten pleasure smoulder
images fade but the town won't let them go

sleepwalking, see you talking
feel the city inside you
(ooh) leave this city behind you

drive wherever the roads will take you to
down beside a river frozen brown
January days and their scarecrow trees
so cold - feel your ears burn

see you walking, see you talking
feel the city inside you
(ooh) leave this city behind you

past and present
they converge on every side
the wires all get tangled
when now and then collide
bittersweet taste of a time and another place before

sleep walking, see you talking
feel the city inside you
(ooh) feel this city define you
(yeah) leave this city behind you

The Sundays - The Smiths - The Cocteau Twins - Prefab Sprout.... these bands dominated my life in the 80s - 90s.......what fabulous music.

    M.... K....

    The Cure also.

    M.... K....

From the same era and the same exact vibe, check out The Innocence Mission ("Everything's Different Now" and "There"). Then check out Shelleyan Orphan ("Fishes" and "Muddied Up"). All very Sundays/Smiths-like and all on YouTube right now. You're welcome.

  8. J.... B....

absolute perfection, my God she can sing right through you

    Warm heart!

  10. I.... ....

It's like English folk music meets Indie, it's overcoming and bewitching, it takes me to the stars no matter the time of day.
What a mark to leave on life... maybe they will return if possible to give us one last spoonful of honey drenched folk meets indie?

I Listen 2 this group every day can't help it!

Harriet and David. what a beautiful destiny. I never will stop listening. Ok I'm 47 and Harriet my friends all miss The Sundays tremendously. Are you guys ever going to perform live again? Very truly yours, Gina Masten

I went to see the Sundays when they played a show in San Diego in 1990.  Just before the show started I was desperately looking for a bathroom but couldn't find it so I though I would go up one floor.  I flung open the door to the stairway and nearly knocked over Harriet Wheeler.  The band's dressing room was upstairs and they were just coming down to start the show.  One of the highlights of my pathetic little life.

    L.... K....

Oh gosh, imagine if you had taken out Harriet Wheeler! The whole world would come after you! Lol. ;)

    L.... K....

This doesn't sound pathetic to me. Hope you are doing well

I still remember so many years ago in the 90s after coming back from a rave, I decided to play The Sundays to help ease the come down of such a wired night & morning, and just lay in bliss and silence listening to their beautiful music, then suddenly a friend responded: dude, gay, this is gay... I suddenly realized that this friend of mine really lacked in the capacity to feel, which is why The Sundays have always been so special to me; when ever i feel empty & dead inside, I know i can find my heart again when i listen to their music..

    M.... R....

Mark R I feel like I’m reading something I would write...I went to a lot of raves in the 90s and I’d do the same exact thing :)

  16. C.... F....

Her voice is so sweet. I love it! <3

  17. G.... B....

The only woman I fell in love with without ever meeting!!

    G.... B....

    Me too !!!

    G.... B....

Graham Ball - Me too but then I met her 😃 - kept in touch briefly, too. Sigh.

    G.... B....

Mercy. I just watched a live video of the Sundays and just fell for her myself.

    G.... B....

After the concert a left with butterflies in my stomach.

    G.... B....

Me too and my now grown daughter caught that ha ha ha ha

  18. K.... V....

Well said. Of course, this was back when singers actually, you know... sang.

  19. G.... W....

    Well mastered.

  20. N.... Z....

    Hermosa

  21. J.... T....

Oh I wish I had seen them live. Such a brilliant band. Check out a band called Interior Castle - I really think they are one to watch. I've seen them live recently in Birmingham.

    J.... T....

I saw them at the Town & Country, Camden....amazing voice of Harriet and musicianship of the band....special place in my heart for that gig.... happy days!

  22. M.... N....

    We surely do miss you!

  23. T.... M....

OK I have to know, at 3:49 is that a picture of Harriet?

    T.... M....

    +Tom Macari no it isnt

  24. M.... R....

I remember buying their first CD on a whim, because the cover and name of the band interested me (reading, writing, and arithmetic). Most awesomest impulse purchase EVERRR

  25. j.... g....

    absolute poetry...immense creation...those sundays...

  26. N.... ....

I have seen them live in Bristol, it was one of those magical moment you can never forget.

  27. J.... W....

    wonderful!

  28. p.... ....

    What a song man

  29. m.... ....

    exceptional

  30. m.... ....

    so good ;)

  31. R.... ....

I'm a long time fan since 1992, I think it's too bad they didn't release a concert video, like many other bands did. I would have bought and wore out 4 vhs/dvd's by now.

  32. w.... ....

Had the biggest crush on Harriet Wheeler in college. Miss this very underrated band.

  33. S.... B....

Hard work, but some of us heard it. Herd it? Great work, except for this song, particularly! Ha!

  34. n.... ....

Was always my favorite track off S&S

  35. A.... ....

man this girls voice is so nice.

  36. s.... ....

    always...huh?

  37. l.... ....

It's true. Her voice is angelic.

  38. n.... ....

I use the expression "scarecrow trees" to this day. I never took an expression from a band before. I use it to describe to myself and others the bare trees in the winter time. They do look like scarecrows. I understand now why I did. On my 4 year old IPOD, I just looked at the "most played" list, and every single song was The Sundays. It's a 64 gig and packed full. ha ha

  39. d.... ....

    not even close.

  40. d.... ....

    @tjmacari NO. that's someone else.

  41. n.... ....
