Styx - The Serpent Is Rising Lyrics

In the abyss of space
From the center of time
A superman race
Moves the Serpent to climb

The journey has lasted
Seven ages or more
Life after life
Must pass through the door

The secret revealed
When you leave your cave
Is a glory of thunder
And life from the grave

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The people have massed
In the center of town
We drink from a glass
And the world turns around

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

The Serpent is rising
Uncoiling in your spine
Bringing you light
From the depths of your mind

    "Witch Wolf"
    Reoccurring symptoms
    Answer the baleful howl
    Bringing me dreams of darkness
The doer of all that's foul
    Raping the minds of infants
    Sower of unplanted seeds
    Full moon warrior
    Doer of sordid deeds

    Witch Wolf
    Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

    Thirteenth hour madman
    Bringing my soul to fire
    Visions of my sweet Beulah
    To torment soon retire

    Witch Wolf
    Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

    Got my one-way ticket
    on this hell bound train
I can't seem to stop falling
I bear the wrath of Cain

    Witch Wolf
    Night Rider
Why do you call for me?

Reminds me of Head East band

  21. N.... ....

Saw Styx in a battle of the bands in 1975 in a high school gym in Evergreen Il.
Cost to get in was fifty cents. They had just released the 1st album. This was
the the opening song of that show. They rocked. The Party at their brownstone
    in Evergreen also rocked.

    N.... ....

Wow!....That is amazing history that you were part of!...I only had my moms LP's untill I saw them in 83 for Kilroy

    N.... ....

Was there good dope at that party, Grandpa?

    N.... ....

    NotAToy outstanding!

    N.... ....

    +Lycan Seijin $10 a lid

  22. M.... ....

I like how it gets all calm at 2:53

  23. J.... D....

Wow! What diversified comments... I was 5 when this album came out and my mom was a STYX fan and had the 4 wooden nickel LPS, which I raised on...And I love the early stuff and the later stuff...cause this simply is great music! JC left...Tommy came in and they even became more successful because of his talents...So what can I say? Other than listening to The grand Illusion and Paradise theater on 8 track in my moms hot rod? I had a great childhood and STYX was a very big part of that...so much so that that they have become my favorite band!

  24. b.... i....

I have these old Styx on vinyl from wooden nickel days. Mr roboto was crap,Paradise Theatre was ok ,their best music stopped at Grand Illusion imho........

    b.... i....

Totally agree. I have every Styx album on original labels and cover art. Not the re- issues with the lame excuses for cover artwork up until that Mr Roboto crap. Refused to buy that album or any one after that.

    b.... i....

Pickle Jar Dennis didn't leave, he said he was sick and wanted them to wait to tour, they didn't want to keep waiting and got Gowan. That still could have been temporary, but a war of words started from that and basically shut the door on Dennis being able to come back.

    b.... i....

    I agree

    b.... i....

Pieces Of Eight was great. Cornerstone went sappy and they rebounded nicely with Paradise Theatre. Kilroy was an 80's album. It is what it is.

    b.... i....

Couldn't of said it better myself.

  25. I.... B....

i see no dislikes, so this song aint to bad. is a little different than most styx songs, but still good song.

    I.... B....

    @IRON BLACK SABBATH MAIDEN
When people say Styx sucks and come sail way or babe is all they have ever heard. Man in the wilderness is a good one so is shooz but because they got no airplay a lot of people don't know them.

    I.... B....

@labtide I know like blue collar man, renegade, suite madame blue, etc in my opinion styx is the best soft rock band ever even better than journey or foreigner.

    I.... B....

@IRON BLACK SABBATH MAIDEN  I see them as a borderline Prog-Rock band.

    I.... B....

@borgduck fair enough but not metal or classic rock like zeppelin and floyd.

    I.... B....

U have the right 2 ur own opinion & freedom of speech. These rights do not guarantee that a person's opinion is at all accurate. U know what they say about opinions don't u? Ur's stinks so much I can smell it over the internet. U r no more of a expert on rock music than I, so come down from ur high horse & quit judging others based on ur narrow point of view.

  26. J.... M....

    Good Guitar!

  27. L.... S....

    Early Styx rocks!

    L.... S....

@Liz Sosa Agree! Have been looking for some live stuff from the early (Wooden Nickel) years, but only one track (Best Thing) is on YouTube. Shame.

    L.... S....

I was never a big fan of them...but this record rocks

    L.... S....

    It does that!

    L.... S....

Yes it does as all of there early stuff

  28. P.... S....

    John is a badass

  29. A.... N....

I always liked JY's voice better than Dennis.

    A.... N....

Until "Lady" made the Top 10 in 1975, JY did most of the lead vocal duties.

    A.... N....

"Sigh" Apples and oranges. JY is good for what he sings and DDY is good for his. Nothing more nothing less.

    A.... N....

    @MrSilksoul steaks and navy beans.

    A.... N....

No comparison. DDY has a superior voice. Superior talent.

    A.... N....

Tommy Shaw was better than both!!

  30. J.... M....

Saw these guys three times in the seventies.  Each time they were better than the last!  They were my favorite rockers back then!  Very tight band in concert!  Nailed every tune!

  31. M.... 6....

Takes me back to 73' throwin' big party's in the Mountains of New Mexico. Best Of Times !!! I bought a pair of Styits to see them in 74'.

  32. s.... ....

Witch wolf is  one of my favs from early STYX.  JY sounds wicked

  33. B.... H....

Styx when they were men.  See also Man of miracles.

  34. P.... ....

Hard to believe they went from this to 'Paradise Theatre" What a piece of crap that album was..Broadway showtunes Crap.

    P.... ....

And Tommy and JY didn't want to do any more concept albums after Paradise Theatre.  Of course Dennis ignored them and put together Kilroy was Here later on.

    P.... ....

Paradise Theatre is like their third best album wtf

    P.... ....

Well I wouldn't say PT is that bad... *Kilroy... & Edge Of The Century* were worse. But I know what you mean. Styx went from doing real
rock-N-roll, to bubblegum pop, and adult contemporary love ballads...

    P.... ....

@Deborah Kerns Grande illusion is still their best: Castle Walls,Come Sail Away,Man in the wilderness, fooling yourself...most hit songs album in their entire catalogue

  35. P.... ....

    Still my favorite Styx album

    P.... ....

I don't know what to tell you all but I'm going through trials and tribulations real bad praise Jesus holy name come for me 🙏 father I don't know how people can be unaffected something is just around the corner and it is biblical I feel it amen

    P.... ....

God have mercy on us all that love you and wait for you

  36. j.... ....

Some great double kick drumming on this album.

  37. D.... P....

    Very cool music!

  38. m.... T....

This sure brings back some memories...I think I was the only one I knew that had this album...I played this so much it wore smooth...Thanks for posting it...

  39. H.... ....

Yeah, not too many members of Styx....past or present...are very fond of the Wooden Nickle albums with the exception of Lady of course. I think there are some hidden gems from this era. Listen to this albums title track if you want proof.

  40. W.... ....

    Deadwood Jam

  41. W.... ....

Seen Styx 3 times also. The last time was in Deadwood SD. Check out Styx live in Deadwood - an awesome performance.

  42. J.... M....

Saw Styx do this in concert at MSA in Indy in 1976. I saw them 3 times and they were more awesome each time! They played tighter than any group I ever saw. styx still kicks ass!

  43. V.... D....

    Agreed 100%

  44. C.... Z....

You never hear this song on the radio, which is a shame.

  45. F.... ....

"one of the worst recorded and produced albums in the history of music." Dennis DeYoung

  46. G.... ....

Great, great number. One of the chief hard rockers from a generally hard-rocking era for Styx. The day I got the Wooden Nickel Recordings was a great day! JY was pretty much the leader then, I believe.

    G.... ....

GreenerHill ~ You're correct there. JY wrote a lot from Styx's Wooden Nickel days... He wrote most of their
*Man Of Miracles* Lp... Unfortunately, it was ignored by the radio stations... And in its place *Lady* was played to death, until it finally became a hit, two years later... *Best Thing* was actually Styx's first top 40 song though, which JY wrote the music to, and some of the lyrics in it...

    G.... ....

@Deborah Kerns: Hi, and sorry it took me 5 months to see your reply! Love Best Thing too. Have you seen that 1975 live recording on here? John Curulewski era. :)

  47. I.... P....

    great as hell

    I.... P....

Tell me, just how great is hell?
    Really, I want to know!

  48. D.... W....

Because it reminds them of the one member they let go of that was the true inspiration for their sound. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT Dennis DeYoung, but John Curulewski.

    D.... W....

Darin Walker ~They didn't let go of JC, John Curuleski quit because of Dennis DeYoung, in '75.

  49. D.... F....

Giving me goose bumps reflecting on the days of my youth in my 1970 Ford Maverick and listening to my 8-track. Parked at the edge of the getty looking into the Pacific where I would surf daily, more likely a quart of Colt 45 Malt liquor between my legs, cheap weed on the side, and "Witch Wolf" blaring on my system.

  50. b.... ....

I was about to agree with this guy, until I realised it was me!

  51. .... ....

    ギターが好きです。

  52. A.... ....

Why does the band hate this album? I don't get it.

    A.... ....

ACrackInTheWall2006 Dennis once said that since, at the time, "Lady" didn't become a hit, that he would go in the complete opposite direction and write "goofy" songs. I guess he didn't like doing the sci-fi lyrics as much as love songs.

  53. P.... ....

An obscure gem from the old pre-mainstream years.....

  54. C.... ....

This album was released in October 1973, only three months after the release of their second album, Styx II, which contained "Lady." 1973 would be the only year Styx would release two studio albums, correct?

    C.... ....

When we were kids they gave us this album, riding down our block.

  55. b.... ....

This stuff is something to listen to after watching Xena/Hercules, or before Conan The Barbarian!

  56. M.... ....

    One band...so much great music...

  57. H.... ....

Renegade is overrated, there are so many other good Styx songs.

  58. H.... ....

I think these albums are great, too bad the only song you ever hear done from them is Lady.

  59. T.... D....

    @countmagnus08 I loved his scream,

  60. G.... ....

Probably the heaviest song on the album. I think all the Wooden Nickel albums are great.

  61. c.... ....

The scream at 3:30 is up there with 'Won't Get Fooled Again.'

  62. T.... ....

@HeavensDemon966 I highly recommend buying the double CD called "The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings." It has all four of their Wooden Nickle albums plus a nice track that wasn't on an album ironically called "Unfinished Song."

  63. T.... ....

@Dragonfly6160 Styx pretty much followed The Beatles' lead in that whoever wrote the song normally did the lead vocals. JY is singing it, and yes, he wrote it along with a gentleman named Ray Brandle.

  64. t.... l....

Yes this is a JY tune. And its great.

  65. C.... Z....

I think James Young wrote this. Much different than other Styx songs.

  66. C.... Z....

    Great early Styx

  67. H.... ....

I have been looking for this song on U-tube forever!!! I had a, "Best of Styx" cassette from way in the early 80's with this tune on it. I wore it out. My all time favorite song of Styx is this one. Thanks!!!

  68. m.... ....

Thankx 4 the post of this overlooked early Styx tune!!!!!
