Styx - Love Is The Ritual Lyrics

Little sister
She got a lot of time she got a lot of money
Don't you know that ain't enough
Pretty thing
All dressed up for the main attraction
Like a baby doll looking for love

And she doesn't need a reason
She just hears a calling to the wild

God gave man the breath of life
To grow up strong to take a wife
To change the world and love is the ritual
You learn to walk & talk & laugh & cry
Heart & soul til the day you die
And above it all love is the ritual

Little man
Beating his chest & flexing his muscles
Gun for hire, he shoots for a star
Like a handsome prince
Walking down the streen in his shining armor
Romeo in search of his heart

There's a method to this madness
And a message calling to the wild

God gave man the breath of life
To grow up strong to take a wife
To change the world and love is the ritual
You learn to walk & talk & laugh & cry
Work your fingers to the bone til the day you die
And above it all love is the ritual

Come on dance little sister, little sister wants to dance
All night looking for true romance
When in a black leather jacket walks little brother
To rock her world, to be her lover

So signal all the children
Send a message calling to the wild

Styx Love Is The Ritual Comments
  1. L.... M....

El mismo del clasico exito de los 80,s.mr robotto..y baby..de los años 70.s.

  2. c.... ....

    Why wasn’t this a hit?

  3. Q.... U....

Does absolutely nothing for me...never did...sorry.

  4. P.... R....

Menurut saya group band rock yg paling hebat yaitu styx di amerika serikat dan kapan styx konser di indonesia

  5. P.... R....

Love is the ritual lagu yg hebat walaupun tommy shaw tidak ikut serta juga vokalis nya bukan dennis de young

  6. M.... ....

More like Def Leppard than Styx.

  7. E.... M....

    Where is Tommy Shaw?

  8. D.... P....

    Great song great album

  9. B.... R....

This song was good but, overall the album sucked hind tit. By the release of this album, styx best days were behind them regardless of replacing Tommy shaw.

  10. J.... ....

This is a REALLY hair metal song, I never heard it back then at all, although I remember "Show Me the Way" all the time on VH1 as a kid

    J.... ....

how much does this sound like 'can't get enuff' by Winger?

  11. P.... S....

Love Styx! Don't like this song. It sounds like cheap Bon Jovi / Guns'n'Roses, too commercial, not my kinda Styx. Beeeeeh

  12. B.... o....

This song rocks! It has a flare STYX was lacking. I have great respect for Tommy and Dennis but this phase of STYX is noteworthy! You may not like it but you have to admit their line up was solid and they ROCKED!

  13. W.... H....

This does not sound like Styx. This whole album shows how important Tommy was to the sound.

  14. D.... K....

    Uhh...yuk.

  15. z.... ....

    Glen Buttmunch?

  16. D.... P....

I've seen Styx 4 times.  Once was in '01 when Glen Burtnick was playing bass on that tour.  At one point he stepped up to the mic, said a few words (we knew what was coming), and they began this song.  It was my highlight of the show.  It's always good, but tossing this into the setlist added something.  It was awesome.

  17. D.... K....

Those of you who say this is terrible, I have to disagree. This was keeping up with the times. Bands such as Styx couldn't keep doing the same old type of material at this time in their career. They needed someone to change it up a bit, which Glen did. Tommy was in Damn Yankees and that served him well also. Once he came back in 1995, he had a different music perspective. Which worked for Styx' 1999 cd "Brave New World". Dennis should have taken a pointer or two, because he came with the same old tired show tunes & ballads he has been doing for the last 20 years. But this album, was a nice change with Glen. It was too bad A&M didn't think so, and released them afterwards.

  18. S.... O....

I guess Glen was upfront because a) he was the best-looking member, b) he fit the mold of "hair band" singer, and c) Styx was full of 40-somethings and were seen as unhip due to the ballads and Mr. Roboto debacle. Too bad it was a few years too late and nothing really separated them from bands that had unique sounds or good-looking lead singers.

    S.... O....

This song is very hair metal tbh, I wonder if that's what they were going for? I bet also there'd been too many years since the last Styx album (1983) and some of the youth in 1990 might've not remembered or given a shit about them. If they'd reformed in like 1986-87 it probably would've worked out better

  19. P.... B....

    Burtnik brought an edge!

    P.... B....

Tommy had the edge and J.Y. isn't dull, he's just pissed off.

  20. B.... t....

It is a good song but it just isn't the Styx. comment if you agree.

    B.... t....

I think their ability to make different types of music is the magic of Styx that has kept them relevant with many different audiences and not just the original Stygians of the 70s.

    B.... t....

    Damn yankees

    B.... t....

You're right; it wasn't. It was Glen Burtnik. It was intended for his solo record and Styx convinced him to put it on their album instead. The song is basically the demo with different drums and a new vocal.

    B.... t....

So, DDY, James, and Chuck aren't actually on the song?

  21. J.... F....

2:53- Did I hear Glen Burtnik correctly sing that? Was Dennis DeYoung a fan of "Flowers In The Attic"?

  22. J.... ....

Maybe the best song of Styx! I love the synthbass!!!

    J.... ....

    Not the Styx though.

  23. d.... p....

sorry, I just don't like it. And I'm a huge styx fan, but I prefer old school styx. Why can't they write songs like crystal ball or suite madame blue, renegade, blue collar man etc....

  24. A.... F....

    LOVE IS RITUAL !!!!!

  25. D.... M....

    So hooked on this...

  26. z.... ....

Great song, but its just not Styx.

  27. T.... ....

Love this song. Such true Hard Rock. The drums... LOVE IT.

  28. A.... ....

My least favorite "Styx" song. The should have changed the name to something more appropriate. At least John's still in the band.

    A.... ....

At this time, all of the band members(except Glenn) were original.

  29. M.... G....

    Very cool song.

  30. D.... M....

    Rocky metal calmon kids

  31. Y.... ....

    Sounds kind of like Winger.

    Y.... ....

Ya it reminds me of Can't Get Enough. Turns out that Michael Bay directed this video as well which adds to the similarities for both songs and their music videos.

    Y.... ....

Yo! as soon as i heard the intro i'm like this sounds exactly like Winger's 2nd album (that also came out in 1990). Spot on comment great call...Signaled the end of hair metal, for sure.

  32. C.... R....

I think this song was written by Glen Burtnik,  and well said Glen "Genesis 2:7"

  33. h.... ....

This may be the oddest song/video released by Styx, and that's saying a lot. First, it's a got a "hair band" kind of sound to it. And for some inexplicable reason, the 4 original band members are barely shown in the video. If you're going to call it a Styx video, then maybe you should actually show Styx. It's not like Glen is SO hot that they need to push him the front for 95% of the video!

    h.... ....

+hutch What most people don't realise is this song is by a member that was in only for a very short time, Glen Burtnik. He had a very different style than Styx.

    h.... ....

@The Criminal Violin I understand that. And I get putting him front and center. But Styx didn't join "The Glen Burtnik Band".....Glen joined Styx. And Styx is barely shown in this video. When Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, did they hide Eddie and the other boys?

    h.... ....

@hutch I know that. I was just pointing it out. Also YouTube never showed that there was more to your comment. It only got as far as the Hair Band sound which is why I said what said.

    h.... ....

he wrote the song he has all the right to be in the video most of the time

    h.... ....

@Roman Ciervo Nothing wrong with him being in the video most of the time. It's just that the band "Styx"....the members who were in it for 25 years at that point, are barely shown. He wouldn't have a record label or a video if he hadn't joined Styx.

  34. T.... ....

    Directed by Michael Bay

  35. K.... S....

Another interesting fact is that eventually Tommy Shaw did come back and they booted out Dennis DeYoung because he had some illness that made touring difficult. Glen Burtnik hung around and played bass when original bassist, Chuck Panzzo was diagnosed with AIDS. He's still considered a member of the band, but only plays with them as a special guest sometimes.

  36. K.... S....

Actually Dennis DeYoung is still in the band at this point. Glen Burtnik replaced Tommy Shaw, who refused to come back from Damn Yankees. This whole album was incredible (Edge of the Century). I saw them in concert on this tour and they were great. What's interesting is that Glen Burtnik plays the guitar upside down. I don't mean he plays a right handed strung for a lefty, like Jimi Hendrix did. I mean he actually plays upside down, with the bass strings closer to the floor. It's really cool.

    K.... S....

Ken S Tommy Shaw and Damn Yankees already signed a record deal... In 1988 Styx was gonna reform with Tommy but MCA took to long releasing Dennis DeYoungs third solo album

    K.... S....

Not according to DDY on Behind The Music. He decided to reform Styx because Tommy was in Damn Yankees.

  37. S.... B....

Let me tell you something...when Dennis DeYoung got all butt hurt because he tried to turn them into an opera band and got fired for it...Styx FINALLY got back to its roots of rock. This song rocks hard and anyone who thinks otherwise is a douchebag.

    S.... B....

Dennis is in the band dumb a$$

    S.... B....

    No, he isn't.

    S.... B....

Yeah.. he (DDY) was on this album, Tommy shaw left at this point. You can see Dennis playing keys in the video.

    S.... B....

...but he isn't in the band now.

  38. G.... .....

esta cancio la busque por mas de 20 años... la habia grabado en un casette pero nunca y desde alli no supe mas .... la encontre gracias al bratboard chart 1990.

  39. J.... P....

He sounds a little like billy squier

  40. P.... T....

Sounds kind of Bon Jovi-ish. Probably because Burtnik

  41. D.... W....

The lead singer, Glen Burtnik, is from the same area as Bon Jovi (North Central NJ), and they know each other. As such, you can expect much of the same influence.

Glen is a great guy and as you can hear here, an amazing musician. He also does a really great Paul McCartney.

  42. b.... ....

It's a good song, just not up to Styx standards. More like hair band era music.

  43. M.... C....

its not a bad song taken alone, but its a terrible song considering its supposed to come from one of the great rock bands of all time, and theres no doubt Styx are up there with the very best

  44. M.... N....

I love it! so rock and roll! been listening to styx my entire life! Amazing!

  45. r.... ....

    go away, you know nothing

  46. b.... ....

Well, it is Styx. It's a lovely song as well....that's what I love about them, they never did the same thing over and over again. Glen Burtnik did a brilliant job on this--it's hard but respectful to women, which you didn't really hear then.

  47. C.... E....

OMG the singer is so hot xD and the song is great !!!

  48. M.... B....

This is Styx. This is one of their shows I went to.

  49. T.... ....

@rockofhysteria Too bad, because this is one of their worst (but still not bad, IMHO).

  50. s.... ....

I didn`t know Styx tried some glam stuff during that time, it`s pretty weird

  51. v.... ....

    @rockofhysteria Ditto!!

  52. r.... ....

This album is really the Only album of theirs I can listen to Front to Back without skipping a single song :)

  53. r.... ....

@TevMorales Yes this is Styx it's the Opening Track from their album Edge Of The Century their only studio album with Glen Burtnik who replaced Tommy Shaw who was with Damn Yankees at the time

    r.... ....

rockofhysteria Burtnik replaced Dennis deYoung on "Cyclorama" (2003).

    r.... ....

When Jack Blades got replaced with Gary Moon. That one Night Ranger album Feeding off the Mojo was terrible in addition to Hole in the Sun.

  54. S.... M....

Closest thing Styx ever got to going glam

  55. T.... ....

@tjrtherocksponge You probably haven't heard any Extreme past More Than Words, then.

  56. T.... ....

@cesear123456 Tommy wasn't present on their first 5 albums either.

  57. T.... ....

@tjrtherocksponge Extreme aren't shit...They're not as good as Styx or Supertramp, but definately nor shit either.

  58. E.... ....

Maybe it's just me, but I rarely find a music video that is as good as the song, and this is no exception. This video makes no sense to me, it's random and kinda jerky and annoyingly flashy...but OMG THIS SONG IS SO GOOD. Styx is frigging amazing, miles ahead of most of the stuff coming out nowadays.

  59. B.... ....

    @johnluvswwe

Styx minus Tommy Shaw and added Glen Burtnik. This is also from 1990 and it fit right in with music at that time. But agree, the classic stuff is better... but Glen Burtnik was a great find for the band.

    B.... ....

Was Tommy Shaw on the Damn Yankees during this time?

  60. D.... ....

this is the only styx song that I like. but I do Love it

  61. K.... P....

    wonderful song!!! i love it!!

  62. c.... ....

This is NOT Styx. This is crap. No Tommy... Styx died in the 80's!

    c.... ....

    It's Styx.

  63. L.... ....

@johnluvswwe Funny b/c this is one of my favorites.

  64. r.... ....

@ladystrange4769 for sure! check your message.. i left you my info

  65. R.... T....

    @redhed5150
wow! that is weird!!!Lol- im from right around the Pony- LOL_ n i have redhair- we MUST jave bumped into each other at some point(:

  66. D.... R....

i love this song glen is amazing love him they should bring back dennis and glen and just kick ass again

  67. s.... ....

Glen is fantastic, this is a great album.

  68. M.... B....

I love this song as much as other Styx songs!

  69. J.... B....

I actually think this is a great song. It sounds like an anthem. A great song to listen to at midday. I find it kind of uplifting.

  70. b.... ....

Great friggin song. A&M should have stood behind this version of Styx.

    b.... ....

It was PolyGram who ignored Styx and focused on Janet Jackson (who completed transition from pudgy to sex siren) and Extreme. American rock radio played this quite a bit. It was the next single that helped the album sell to Gold sales.

  71. M.... B....

@Celrock It may be different than Styx stile but I love it (like the other Styx songs)

  72. c.... ....

the song is shit ..........But the Guitar parts and sound is Fffffffffat !

  73. A.... M....

This stinks...if he was with them the whole time we wouldn't even know who Styx is...lol...

  74. v.... ....

This guy Glen Burtnik looks just like Ronnie O'Sullivan ( a snooker player )!

  75. r.... ....

also check out Glen's cd "Heroes and Zeroes" and other band Slaves of New Brunswick. If you grew up in Jersey it is a must..

  76. r.... ....

funny thing is Glen didnt do this song like this when he was in his own band.I'm a big follower since the early 80s at the Stone Pony in jersey. Dont care for this version. Glen is a simple muscian, give him an acoustic guitar and he makes music. I was happy for him joining Styx but he was never excepted in that band by the fans.

  77. K.... O....

Tommy is still with them..what are you even talking about?

    K.... O....

Kayla Oliver ~ Tommy was with Damn Yankees during this time. So they brought in Glen Burtnik to take his place. Tommy rejoined them for their 1995 Best Of Release. And he has stayed on since then.

  78. K.... O....

Mmhmm he makes them like 80's retro rock xD Which I love. But have you noticed they are like changing as they get older..I don't like it :( im 14 and have grown up with them and it's makin' me sad seeing it happen.

  79. A.... ....

Glen's voice is very nice, I like very much this cd!

  80. j.... ....

on the other side...tommy shaw was hitting big time with DAMN YANKEES at the time.

  81. s.... ....

Tommy and the guys where ready in the late 80's but Dennis was not.. HE was Doing his Hutch Back stuff and by the time Dennis was ready Tommy joined Damn Yankees....

    s.... ....

Hunchback was done in 1997. That's how Dennis got sick, because he was touring with Styx in their 20th anniversary tour of Grand Illusion, and running back to do Hunchback at the same time.

  82. s.... ....

Better singer then who? Tommy? I like Glen but he will never be better then Tommy....

  83. A.... ....

Yeah, this song is the best, Styx For Ever From Italy

  84. p.... ....

"STYX" IS THE RITUAL!! My bad!!

  85. p.... ....

You got that right!! And this still sounds very good!! You can hear 'Dennis's back ground vocals & keyboards giving it the polished "STYX" I still recognized!! This album should have sold more!! 'Dennis' always left the door wide open for 'Tommy' to return & look how he betrayed him!! Shame on the new "STYNX" - "STYX" IS THE RUTUAL!!!

  86. L.... ....

I guess 18 years later I find less and less to truly dislike about this song. But when it first appeared as the lead-off single from the forthcoming Styx reunion album Edge Of A Century in 1990 it was truly bewildering.
First of all it didn't even remotely resemble anything Styx had released before. Secondly they had the "new guy" both writing and singing it. No wonder the single died at #80. The album didn't really start selling until the Dennis DeYoung ballads started rolling out.

  87. S.... ....

Great song... that bon jovi comment... What ya been smokin dude?!?!

  88. C.... ....

This looks like a Victoria Secret commercial.
