Styx - Crystal Ball Lyrics

I used to like to walk the straight and narrow line
I used to think that everything was fine
Sometimes I'd like to sit and gaze for days through sleepless dreams
All alone and trapped in time
All alone and trapped in time

I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me
Or am I even in it's mind at all
Perhaps I'll get a chance to look ahead and see
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball

Tell me, tell me where I'm going
I don't know where I've been
Tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
And then tell me again
My heart is breaking, my body's aching
And I don't know where to go
Tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
I've just got to know

Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball

["extra verse" used occasionally live]
If you should see me walking
Through your dreams at night
Would you please direct me
Where I ought to be
I've been looking for a crystal ball
To shed the light
To find a future in me...
To find a future in me...

Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball

Styx Crystal Ball Comments
  1. G.... E....

I'm only two months old and I love this song. My great great grandparents listened to this stuff. I forgot to mention that I'm listening in 2019 and it reminds me of my best bud who tragically died while jerking off.

  2. G.... E....

Fan comments are always so mind numbing. Go to ANY Youtube music vid and you will hear the SAME comments about the music in the vid. Only the names of the performers change. This is why performers have such dislike of their idiot adoring fans, even though they like their money.

  3. R.... M....

Tremendous harmonies, great song writing, great execution...in other words, everything.

  4. G.... A....

Oh the real deal here! I have been jammin to theses guys since the late 70's! Thats right, grass roots listener here!

Saw them in 1979. Where does the time go? Better consult my crystal ball.

  15. D.... L....

I think they fade out the beautiful end solo too soon. Fortunately there are live versions with extended solos. Probably Tommy’s best solo and song. And his first in Styx!

  16. D.... K....

Tommy Shaw is brilliant and one of the most talented people in music. If you think about it this was a super group with a lot of talent and as much as I love Dennis DeYoung as one of the best singers ever that does not takeaway from the brilliance and talent of Tommy Shaw, great guitarist, fantastic singer what an awesome song writer. Glad I got to see him so many times. Styx has so many great songs and should easily be in the hall of fame, How could I not include Styx in my top 10 of all time?

  17. D.... M....

Please don't drop your crystal balls,,,

thank You M.P you have a special place in my heart ever forever.

  28. f.... ....

I haven't heard this for so long. Funny how when you get older, you forget what you just did two minutes ago, but you hear a song that you haven't heard for years, and remember all the words. Music is one of God's finest creations. Sense of smell. My Grandma gave me a bookmark with a tiny thin wooden cross. I still remember the smell. A beautiful turkey candle for my birthday because it falls on Thanksgiving. The scent i fell asleep to when i was very young and chose to sleep in my closet because it was dark and peaceful. Every day at work i can smell her house. Olfactory cells kick ass! Thanks God. And thank you Grandma for fanning me till i went to sleep when i stayed the night with you in the summer. I Love You.

  29. C.... T....

They dont know how to make music like this anymore, pure talent.

So melodic, the melodic nature and depth of 70s music was just a beautiful journey

  33. T.... H....

Styx was one of my favorite bands back in the day. Suite madame blue was one of my favorite songs. Greatest hits album is awesome ♥️

  34. C.... S....

This song makes me yearn for my youth...

One of Styx's greatest songs ever...one of _the_ greatest songs ever, actually.

Hey Mr President, if your ever going to make America great again, you better do something about the music.

  40. C.... R....

I had a chance to see Styx last year, Tommy did a great job. I will always remember this song from when my son was kidnapped by his mother, not knowing where he was for almost a year.

  41. b.... d....

  59. I.... M....

The classic in classic rock. Enough said.

  60. Y.... ....

I saw Styx tonight live where I live perform this song. Tommy Shaw is incredible. The whole band is incredible.

  61. D.... K....

I used to like to walk the straight and narrow line

  62. R.... L....

Life was sooooo great in the late 70's and 80's.

  63. M.... ....

Tommy Shaw was the missing piece in the puzzle. When he joined, the perfect Styx team was established. The band was never just about Dennis DeYoung.

  64. M.... D....

Takes me back to the sweet 70s !!! Styx was definately the band of the 70s !!!

  65. r.... ....

Maybe it's me, but Star Rider by Foreigner and Crystal Ball by Styx have the same 'feel' to me. I'm not saying they have the same riffs or structure, but something about those two songs remind me of the other.

  66. S.... M....

My first concert. 1983. Tommy Shaw came out into the crowd on the floor with a guitar and we were mesmerized.

  67. S.... F....

*....I don’t even Believe in “Crystal Ball’s” but I Love the Melody, Dynamics, Vocals, Outstanding Keyboards and Guitar....drums and bass are very complimentary.....”God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands”*

  68. c.... ....

Every time I hear this, I am 16 again, terrified of what the future holds. Time has passed, many of the fears have faded, many I have had to face, and some I still face. And then there are new ones. The ones where I wonder whether I have left my children with my own fears instead of finding how to inspire them. Such is the power of music and the frailty of man.

    c.... ....

It's not always about inspiring your children "to be the best the best they can be". One can also inspire them to not be as fucked up as we are ! Setting a good example is one path, showing them how easy it is to screw up is another. Give yourself a break.

    c.... ....

@Ken Spurlock Thank you. Sometimes it is hard......

  69. A.... B....

one of my favorite written/sung songs of all time

  70. T.... ....

This song was actually written for harvest. Shaw claimes he wrote it with styx but his band harvest released it one year earlier. Mind blowing.

  71. H.... D....

My heart is broke, my body's aching, I don't know what to do😪

  72. Z.... J....

THEY BETTER PLAY THIS AT SWEDEN ROCK THIS WEEKEND Peace World

  73. k.... ....

Another one of my favorite styx songs.

  74. J.... B....

    Styx was completely underrated IMHO
Crystal Ball is a classic, Suite Madam Blue incredible, and then add in Lady, Lorelei and would guess not a lot of people know them without hearing them first.

  75. M.... M....

Best Styx song ever. Tommy Shaw brought this song to his audition. I think it helped him get the job for sure!

I still think DeYoung is the better singer.. but, MAN, this is such a powerful song. I'm almost 59, and there are still so many things I need to know. (And as Bob Seeger sang, there are things "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.")
