Streisand, Barbra - Martina Lyrics

I can see Martina as a child of three
In the sad seclusion of her nursery
Go outside, Martina! Go outside and play
Never speak, Martina, put your toys away
So her days were loveless
And her nights the same
When she cried for someone
No one ever came...
Is it any wonder that her eyes grew cold?
That she loved nobody and her young heart grew old
All the children crying from the age of three
Grow to be Martina's and me...

I believe that Ray Ellis was responsible for this wonderful arrangement. The piano accompaniment is particularly nice. It is introduced with the horn section as she sings the line "So her days were loveless and her nights the same. When she cried for someone no one ever came."
Ellis was a well respected American record producer, arranger and conductor (July 28, 1923 – October 27, 2008).

During this era, the way the mic picked up Steisand's voice on the softer but full tones was just miraculous.

+Robert -- an astute observation, Mister Lee. I always enjoy listening to Streisand recordings pre-1972.

I find this song to be very haunting, but in a mellow kind of way. It's a beautiful song.

I don't really attempt to relate a context. I just listen to the song and let it do what it does.
