Stone Roses, The - Somethings Burning Lyrics

Don't count your chickens, 'cause they're never gonna hatch
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'Cause you're too dumb, baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow, baby
You just couldn't get off your knees

Don't count your chickens, 'cause they're never gonna hatch
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'Cause you're too dumb, baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow, baby
You just couldn't get off your knees

I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind the disguise
What you gonna do, and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way

It doesn't pay to disorientate me
It doesn't cost to be someone
I am the vine
And you are the branches

Don't knock a young man, you don't know what he'll get done
You can't kick an old man, see what he's become
You're far too lazy
You stick to your pillow with ease
'Cause you're much too lazy
You just couldn't get off your knees

I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do, and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way

It doesn't pay to disorientate me
It doesn't cost to be someone
I am the vine
And you are the branches

Don't count your chickens 'cause they're never gonna hatch
You can't catch a monkey with a shotgun and a sack
'Cause you're too dumb, baby
You can't see the wood for the trees
'Cause you're too slow, baby
You just couldn't get off your knees

I can see the love and the hate in your eyes
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do, and what you gonna say?
I'm not the only one believing there's an easier way

What you gonna do with the rest of your life?
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do with the rest of your life?
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do with the rest of your life?
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise
What you gonna do with the rest of your life?
Penny for the thoughts behind your disguise

I am the vine
And you're the branches

Stone Roses, The Somethings Burning Comments
  1. N.... B....

    biblical

  2. G.... D....

If only Oasis could be as cool as f@ck as the Stone Roses.

  3. M.... ....

That period from ‘89 - ‘91 really saw the Stone Roses hit the crest of a wave. In that very short time they probably produced more British classics than any other band before or since (The Beatles, Oasis and The Smiths aside).
This little known gem of a track kinda captured them at their youthful peak and was an absolute snapshot of the times, before Evans and Silvertone destroyed one of the UK’s greatest ever bands due to pure greed.
I fully understand why The Roses reformed in 2011, but unfortunately 20 years can take its toll on the creativity and relevance of even these once untouchable indie deities.
In 2012 ( the reformation) all I saw was a jaded (and in a lot of ways, comical) pastiche of the revolutionary, pioneering and attitude laden geniuses that inspired at generation youths and musicians alike all those years earlier.

  4. N.... T....

Its interesting that at the core of the Roses' split/differences (apart from management/money) was Squire's insistence to go in a rock direction, heavier guitar etc rather then keep up the groove they had established. That's understandable as a (great) guitarist. Groove Harder (it's on youtube) is an example of perhaps somewhere in the middle as a compromise. Personally (it's all personal taste) I think Something's Burning was a great sound and a perfect direction, hopefully fun for them to play on tour etc too. A great band. I'll always be a fan.

  31. A.... J....

God the roses helped me through an adolescent nightmare. Thanks John, Ian, Reni & Andy.

  32. S.... ....

This & 'One Love' are the Roses @ the apex of their powers after coming off their classic debut and groundbreaking 'Fools Gold'. Truly what the world was waiting for. I always try to imagine what a full album of songs like the previous 4 would have sounded like. Coolest band ever.

  33. D.... C....

I am the vine ... and you are the branches

  34. e.... w....

The stone roses were the smoothest and coolest motherfuckers ever..I mean no band can ever sound anywhere near like this, fool's gold, one love,i am the resurrection instrumental etc

  35. W.... W....

love this roses tune, great lyrics and reni is so good on this one, like always

  36. T.... M....

underrated single for sure, and this is a great b-side

  37. t.... ....

    Four of fusion ‼

  38. L.... G....

Finally found this song!! Heard it for the first time in the made of stone film months and months ago and couldn't find it anywhere

    L.... G....

It was on " Turns Into Stone" from '91, easy to find and buy, how did you miss that classic release, some of their best songs?

  39. H.... ....

I got into Miles Davis 'Bitches Brew' because of this track, still great after 25 years...

    H.... ....

I'm really curious as to how this relates to Bitches Brew

    H.... ....

    @Christian Degges
I was recommended 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down' by someone who told me this track sounded like it was influenced by it... and i think they were right...

    H.... ....

Carpets did a song called Bitches Brew too. I really like the bass on it. Carpets brilliant live.

  40. L.... R....

Please play in Manchester boys :) 11 days to go!!

  41. d.... e....

    This is so comforting

  42. h.... b....

This is what their second album would have sounded like... along with Fools Gold and One Love! Such a shame they never got to make it

  43. K.... M....

The complete Stone Roses was the 90's version of the White album.

  44. J.... R....

at first you get hairs on the back of your neck stand up, then the vibes run upwards to your brain and your in heaven

  45. G.... P....

Their best song. Funky as hell.

  46. c.... b....

    try follow this oasis

  47. R.... T....

if they play this in Dublin in 2016 I'll lose my mind! Great song,my favourite stone roses tune!

    R.... T....

Definitely mate, unlikely though. They will probably play more of their mainstream tracks e.g I wanna be adored, I am the resurrection, Waterfall etc.

    R.... T....

+William Cairns they played it throughout there reunion tour a few years back I noticed, but I agree they will most likely play the mainstream stuff but if I hear this,I will lose my mind!

  48. g.... ....

I am genuinely of the opinion that this is (probably) the best Roses track. Certainly my favourite. Oozes class at every turn.

    g.... ....

+spooner0770 Interesting observation mate, after a 2nd listen to 'Beautiful Thing' I can also hear a bit more of the Second Coming in Squires guitar playing, but I'm pleased they've wandered back towards this style after my disappointment with 'All for one' which I frankly hated... I hope they've managed to break a bit of new ground with the new album, they've been a big inspiration to me and I would hate their new work to be irrelevant (although I suspect it will be to anyone under 40 anyway)....

    g.... ....

+Hypnodelica likewise mate. This band literally made me the person I am today. Was introduced to them at a very early age. To be honest, One For All I like. It's a catchy, simple explosive burst of energy, exactly what they needed to get the ball rolling. More of a live song per say. This new tune is exactly what I was hoping for, something a little deeper, more experimental. Although I still feel they're playing it safe, and I'm happy with that. But There's no other band who've experimented more with their sound than the Roses (eg.Garage Flower to Second Coming). So we know they're capable. 'Beautiful Thing' to me is the 21st centuries rendition of what they're sound should have been hadn't they been de-railed in '91. It's funky, fluid, rhythmic and not so guitar driven. But like I said their 50+ now, John you can hear in his playing, considers himself a classic rock guitarist (second coming style) and he won't deviate from that. Im just rambling now haha, moral of the story: Great Tune

    g.... ....

In the years since the Roses went their separate ways i discovered bands like Can and the Beta Band who pushed experimentation much further than the Roses did in their heyday and for me the new Roses stuff feels a little bit dated by comparison to their very best work - i still love them for what they meant to me in the early 90's but i'm not convinced that they're capable of pushing any new musical boundaries now... not meaning to sound negative, i wasn't even expecting any new music from the Roses - it's just that i always measure my favourite musicians against higher standards than i expect from lesser artists... what most disappointed me with the new stuff is the lack of a great song in them, they sound like someone else trying to sound like the Stone Roses, rather than the classic Roses if that makes sense...

    g.... ....

one of their best for sure, too many greats to pick 1, Standing Here always takes me to a different place, 1 of my favorites

    g.... ....

    Nail on head

  49. R.... ....

This is the direction they were going in right before they got de-railed. It's a shame really as this is just pure class to the highest degree

    R.... ....

They could have had an album in 92, they couldn't agree on a sound.

    R.... ....

    RockaFella Absolutely

    R.... ....

3 years later and your still spot on 👍🏻

    R.... ....

Agreed. This and One Love on one record. A bunch of mates making music like this. So cool. Will always be one of the best bands to exist. To me. Seems the 'management' around them really messed things up, money, power and BS. Gareth Evans being one for example. Look him up if you can stand to! All the best to everyone.

    R.... ....

Stuff like this doesn't sell though. They'd have become like the Stereo MCs. With Second Coming, they did absorb the dancey tribal beats in to a folk/heavy rock style. I think songs like Something Burning suggest an easygoing yet deep groove that it's not as easy or as fruitful to move in the direction of as it seems unless you have a really big character like Shaun Ryder to push it through who can bring along all the beer and cigs crowd along with him too. Beautiful Thing's a bit of this nature and it's nice but I wouldn't want a whole album of it. Basically, Ian Brown's solo career kind of went in a similar direction and it's nice - it is LOVE just like him - but starts to lack bite.

  50. R.... H....

You're far too lazy....you stick to your pillow with ease....

    R.... H....

+Reidos House you can kick an old man see what he's become

  51. C.... M....

Penny for the thoughts behind the disguise

  52. N.... ....

    Utter masterpiece, end of.

    N.... ....

    Here here.

  53. A.... T....

I remember buying this in town in 1990, then going to Afflecks Palace to buy some joe bloggs flares and funky hoodies with my mates.. Piccadilly gardens and the Arndale were full of students etc wearing baggy jeans and kickers.. Wild and brilliant days back then..This song and One Love was the Roses at their Zenith..Class

  54. F.... ....

b-side to one love. This is a top choooooooooon!

  55. W.... x....

Something deeply nostalgic in this track of theirs for me - brings me back to early university days, exploring all kinds of things. :) thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for the upload!

  56. c.... M....

Ain't heard in years just stone roses revisited haha class ;)

  57. W.... M....

It does not get any better than this...
Way ahead of their time... Brilliant

    W.... M....

    Love it, William

  58. L.... M....

I don't really understand why this isn't more popular.

    L.... M....

Because it's so laidback and it's a quiet funk. Despite being catchy, it's too classily subtle for masses of people to get how good it is. It's a great encapsulation of the humble positivity of 90s youth Britain.

    L.... M....

Lot of punters out there don't know shit Cocker!

    L.... M....

@Picnicl What on earth does that last sentence even mean?

  59. t.... m....

    the best!

  60. P.... .....

    Amazing at glasgow green live

  61. D.... F....

Tell me, how does one "shut up" on a posted comment? Do you always talk with profanity to complete strangers; is this how your mother raised you to be? I bet they are incredibly proud of you. You clearly lack the intuition and forethought to have an intelligent conversation; it's kill first and ask questions later. Lemmings have always struggled to get out the matrix box, and one such as yourself that is an advocate of free speech is a case & point! Good day to you.

  62. D.... F....

Why would you pander to a pathetic notion brought on by society that you have to be "cool" and set a trend in order to gain popularity; thus somehow succeeding in this existence we call 'life'? It goes against everything The Stone Roses stand for. One likes a song because of what it stands for; they can relate to the lyrics or the music is something they enjoy. Not because it's "cool". Only a 12-year-old would say such a thing.

  63. s.... ....

yeah it should have, Ian brown also said they should have made this the A side he thought one love missed the mark. They defo should have just put this out as the A side nobody else can make music like this

  64. c.... ....

    They ALL should've been singles!

  65. D.... O....

    Hipsters Paradise !

  66. T.... O....

this should have been a single!

  67. s.... ....

I can see the love and the hate in your eyes x

  68. b.... h....

completely one of the best ,most impactful, most real bands ever. Anyone who has any taste knows anything about music, records etc. will greatly respect this band really ahead of their time to me I feel quite 21st century when I listen to the stone roses. beautiful every time

  69. p.... m....

"What you gonna do with the rest of your life?"

    p.... m....

Listen to this I expect. Thanks Roses!

  70. B.... B....

    4:23 that sound :O

  71. M.... M....

I was there Sunday and they were sublime!

  72. s.... c....

On Saturday at Heaton Park... 75,000 people singing this... Life was perfect.... Just perfect....

  73. P.... B....

You're right, there's more to the roses than what you hear on the radio. Breaking into heaven really does the job too. It's like the rolling stones, everyone knows satisfaction, sympathy etc... but they've put out some stuff to equal those tunes but never released those tunes as singles.

  74. P.... B....

I must say this tune always reminds of heavy come downs and always quite subtly got me off to sleep. It's like a lullaby, It's just everything, Ian's voice, John's echoing guitar, Mani's plodding along bass and Reni constantly tapping along on them drums. Almost hypnotic, it just all comes together perfectly.

  75. S.... ....

They never 'splashed' the Silvertone offices, they 'splashed' the FM Revolver offices.

  76. J.... F....

@CitizenRiko What you say is true about wasted years, but The Stone Roses still came back with Second Coming. They could of carried on under a different record label, but cocaine got in the way of that. 'I am the Resurrection' is about anti-religion. It's making the point that the Catholic church is the biggest and richest organisation that is supposed to be a charity. You worship God, but there's a catch...pay the church too. This is wrong! That's all. Nothing to do with egos.

  77. J.... F....

@CitizenRiko Actually drugs and combined with egos destroyed the band...temporally though I might add.

    J.... F....

Are you sure? Do you know about all the management BS? Maybe you dont. Look up Gareth Evan's and others if you want to. Or can stand to. The business side ruined what they had going as mates. Shame but still great live etc. Roses forever!

  78. p.... p....

The buisness could listen to this for ever dreamy

  79. j.... ....

listen to that guitar...fucking listen to that, amazing

  80. s.... ....

    @honuman39 as well as BADASS!!

  81. h.... ....

@MrManchester316 am sure this is the bside tae one love, true? bought it on vynal with a limited edition postcard in the inside of the sleeve. seen them in a big tent on glasgow green round aboot 1990,memory a bit hazy. who said the second coming was shite?good fucken album, will they be as good this time round? who gives a fuck, was there first time round ha ha ha
    /

  82. s.... ....

@MrManchester316 true roses fans have all the singles with b sides already. No need for turns into stone for us. But its good for those who missed out on the singles at the time I guess

  83. p.... ....

    Great little song love it.

  84. c.... ....

    Soooo Overated

  85. s.... ....

everyone asks what's your fave roses tune? you could pick something obvious like fools gold or resurrection . Be cool like me and say somethings burning

  86. j.... ....

@klinepatsy I don't know how you can compare Stone Roses to The Smiths..? Completely different.

  87. s.... ....

i'm always sad when this song fades out, squire just getting into his stride

  88. D.... ....

First time hearing this song...Smooth Jazzy Funky Deep elements with that "taka taka taka taka"in the background....sooo nice! Thx to my girlfriend for putting me on!....

  89. G.... ....

    Ah, what a masterpiece...!!

  90. s.... ....

I"m a very late SR discoverer, but this track is very nice and kind of jazzy. Reminds me of early Traffic. Anyone out there old enough to remember them? ;-) Cheers from Houston, Texas

  91. C.... L....

The only criticism there should be towards Second Coming is that the interval was too long between the albums and by then the seeds were sown for a new movement in music. The Roses could have pissed into heaven otherwise...

  92. n.... m....

What I wouldn't give to just talk to Ian Brown for one hour...

  93. A.... ....

@MrManchester316 just because there is crap doesnt make other music good

  94. m.... p....

    @honuman39 I'll say!

  95. Y.... ....

doesnt get any better....my fav roses tune..!

  96. h.... ....

man is this song sublime. mysterious, subdued, melodic, hypnotic and catchy as hell. That guitar lick that brings the song back around after the chorus while the bass drops out is some tastiness.

  97. e.... ....

The "Lost Demos" version of this on the special edition Stone Roses album is almost unrecognisably different! Still an absolutely knockout tune though.

  98. h.... ....

    the roses at their zenith........
