Stewart, John - Monterey Lyrics

The good ship sailed out of the harbour that day
Out of the town Monterey
She stood on the shoreline and silently prayed
Send him back home Monterey

Old Riley in the lighthouse had started to sing
"Stand at the wheel while you may"
The beads of her rosary went round on her rings
Send him back home Monterey

Before the wind
And the sun does him in
Ah, send him back home Monterey
And she prayed for the wind and the sailor that day
Monterey

Before the wind
And the sun does him in
Ah, send him back home Monterey
And she prayed for the wind and the sailor that day
Monterey

This is an underrated masterpiece. What is the ship? Who is the woman who prayed for the wind and the sailor? Who is the sailor? The lack of details is the reason why the song is so compelling.

Ms. True Love and I stayed at a B&B just outside Monterey in the late '70's. After a sleepless night, I complained about the owners' barking dogs. The told me it wasn't dogs barking, it was the seals down on the beach. My bad!
