Steve Hackett - The Return Of The Giant Hogweed Lyrics

Turn and run
Nothing can stop them
Around every river and canal their power is growing
Stamp them out
We must destroy them
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour

They are invincible
They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering

Long ago in the Russian hills
A Victorian explorer found the regal Hogweed by a marsh
He captured it and brought it home
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge
Royal beast did not forget
He came home to London
And made a present of the Hogweed to the Royal Gardens at Kew

Waste no time
They are approaching
Hurry now, we must protect ourselves and find some shelter
Strike by night
They are defenceless
They all need the sun to photosensitize their venom

Still they're invincible
Still they're immune to all our herbicidal battering
Fashionable country gentlemen had some cultivated wild gardens
In which they innocently planted the Giant Hogweed throughout the land
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge
Royal beast did not forget
Soon they escaped, spreading their seed, preparing for an onslaught, threatening the human race

The Dance of the Giant Hogweed

Mighty Hogweed is avenged
Human bodies soon will know our anger
Kill them with your Hogweed hairs
Heracleum mantegazziani

Steve Hackett The Return Of The Giant Hogweed Comments
  1. M.... H....

This song's intro make me so happy. The rest of it too

  2. M.... ....

The Hogweed is also becoming a threat here across the pond...I've seen pics of guys eradicating it while wearing hazmat suits. Holy crap, what a vile life form. But it sure made for a great song!

  3. R.... M....

From Jonah Goldberg, American political writer: what made England great was being so weird, weirdness as a seed of tolerance. This music is beautifully weird.

  4. P.... S....

A good rendition of a great old Genesis song. Arguably the heaviest track the classic line-up ever recorded. Even my heavy metal loving elder brother used to like this! The version on the first Genesis live album from 1973 is probably my favourite; the band develop a tremendous power and the track has so much juice it would play itself in a power cut.

  5. G.... ....

Old fan of Genesis here (1970's), wonderful to hear Steve's Band. Dare I say this is as good as Gabriel/Genesis days, maybe better with todays technology.

  6. R.... ....

    👁 El ojo

  7. R.... O....

musicals are great but the listener neds to know the story behind the music ,not knocking your talent and no dought it will sell all over the world but for me just a jumble of wellplayed beautifull sounds but no storie

    R.... O....

You do realise this is a track from an album recorded/released in 1971 and has probably sold as many copies all over the world, bar a steady trickle of latecomers to Genesis, as it will ever do?

  8. R.... O....

so much talent and so much skill but I can think of a hundred people who woulnt even put this on maybe even a thousand it just seems lile a talented group of guys doing there own thing

  9. j.... p....

  16. M.... ....

Absolutely magnificent. A recreation of the original which was so perfect. The peak of rock music IMO.

  17. W.... D....

I have heard the song a thousand times but I never paid any attention to the lyrics, how does it come out?

  18. P.... R....

Bass & drums here out of this world.

  21. p.... g....

    Fabulous 👍👌👍👌👍🤘

  22. a.... T....

This is the best genesis era, and the singer nails it

  23. J.... B....

This song is a perfect example of the challenges put on the Genesis band members by Peter Gabriel with his overly complex and wordy lyrics. Most of the time it worked well but it must have been tough to work around sometimes. With a Trick of the Tail we saw the music take the upper hand over the lyrics. You can make your own minds up whether you thought this was a good thing. Pink Floyd had the same challenges in the Roger Waters days.

  27. j.... ....

The vocalists did a really good job on this. Great song. I used the original in a recent video, see my uploads on my channel for a couple of recent videos about the Giant Hogweed. July 2019

  28. J.... A....

Wouldn' mind it at all if they renamed themselves GENESIS one of these days.

    J.... A....

Can you imagine if Steve and his band played I Cant Dance! haha

At 64, I dare to say that Steve Hackett is a being of light who has come to this world with his wonderful music to illuminate and deliver beauty to the earth ... I do not have the technical knowledge of music, I just know that from the beginning of the 70s, where my musical taste was sealed mainly by progressive rock and Genesis mainly.
Here in Chile I have had the opportunity to witness their live shows and what can I say about this experience. Only thanks to life for having had this opportunity.
Thank you Steve for always demonstrating that great simplicity as a person.

  30. E.... A....

Pardon my ignorance but whose the singer? Amazing job. Sounds as much as PG as PG

  34. R.... ....

the animations on the screen were a bit reminiscent of the kind of stuff you'd see on Geocities in the early 2000s (not a compliment) but other than that, everyone was on point here. Absolutely fantastic rendition of an absolutely fantastic song. I can't wait for Steve's concert in Philly!

  35. f.... R....

The Rickenbacker sound is so powerful
