Stereophonics - Before Anyone Knew Our Name Lyrics

I miss you, man
Before anyone knew our name
We had the fire, had desire
But what went wrong then?
It seemed so big in the eye of our storm
Couldn't have been further away from our norm
Who did we become? The men we were meant to be
Was that really your destiny?
Was that really your dream?
I don't really feel anyone else came close to how we see

We had the prize before our eyes
But we already had it all anyway
Driving round for hours on end
With the music on loud
Driving round in a scrapyard van
With the music on loud
I've laughed and cried, I've confessed and I've lied
We built this thing from a dead end street
And now I'm looking around for you to see
I miss you, man

Before anyone knew our name
We had the fire
Before anyone knew our name
We had desire
Before anyone knew our name
I miss you, man

Streets so quiet now
Run down and heavy
It used to be alive
Swimming pools of cries
Yeah, we said our sorry's
Yeah, we made our make ups
But that don't make up for what's missing now
We built this thing from a dead end street
You couldn't drive through, just take the bus or just meet
The mountain tops, they don't seem so high
The trees I climbed, they don't seem so high
I take my kids to see the world where we played
I miss you, man

Before anyone knew our name
We had the fire
Before anyone knew our name
We had desire
Before anyone knew our name
I miss you, man

Before anyone knew our name
We had the fire
Before anyone knew our name
We had desire
Before anyone knew our name
I miss you, man

Stereophonics Before Anyone Knew Our Name Comments

75 people with thumbs down have no music taste..

I am completely smitten by this song. It makes me cry every time I hear it and I listen to it frequently. I remember getting Word Gets Around and telling all my friends about this brilliant new Welsh band. And then the album won the Mercury music prize and everyone was asking me if I'd heard it! The song resonates with me so much because of that, because of the social references (my town Tredegar is similarly subdued) and the cultural references...i used to drive around all night with my friends (because there was nothing to do). Such a haunting, moving song.

  16. C.... D....

Great thoughtful song, but you should be making up with his mum and family, before making up with Stuart's memory mate.

  17. J.... D....

67 dislikes? We have all lost someone close to us one way or another. If you can't appreciated this song even if your not a fan of the band. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

  18. T.... C....

First time hearing this I had tears in my eyes, now it make me smile. Never the same without Stuart. Stereophonics were a big part of my teenage years. Been a fan since 1997.

  36. T.... S....

    Breaks my heart

  37. M.... 8....

Lost my best friend in a work accident yesterday.
    Miss you Martin x

  38. c.... ....

,,,, concur with all the drummer threads on here. Javier Wayler's energy suited the band, he was an able replacement for the irreplaceable. Javier always gave %100. The new bloke Morrison pales in comparison and is no where near his predecessors if he drums for another hundred years. Soulless and forgettable...

  39. A.... H....

Met the band back in 1999 just lads living the dream was class to watch .....✊🏻 RIP Stewart

  40. E.... O....

Beautiful and heart-felt, can't watch it without bawling 😭

Nobody could ever replace Stuart!   He was a top man with a character larger than life!!  RIP mate.

  45. A.... L....

THE best voice in music today!

  46. K.... T....

Been a phonics fan for years now, this is just so raw and powerful. Actually brought me to tears. Doesn't take long to figure out what or who this song is about. R.I.P Stuart, legendary drummer with a heart of gold. Coming to see you boys live at the metro in Newcastle in March. Can't fucking wait!

  47. m.... a....

9th march m.e..n  cant wait what a band best band ever

Absolutely beautiful. Love you guys 😘

  51. S.... ....

    Always bautiful

  52. D.... ....

The loss of a best friend is devastating- I have been through it. You have braved so many obstacles (your sorry's) and yet you still love him- you are a true friend. I am so sorry for your loss, and I am so sorry that he couldn't hang on. The first 10 seconds of this song I knew it was about Stuart- baby, he loves you too.

  53. j.... c....

Rip Stuart cable you was the best drummer

  54. M.... H....

On the way into magor service....I needed a piss..as I was entering the building Stuart Cable was exiting...no words were spoken..we just shook hands and passed each other with smiles...he was a top bloke..rip xx

  62. F.... D....

Beautiful song, great tribute to Stu.....!!

  63. K.... P....

    Love that song

  64. F.... C....

I love this....the story just sits so nice....lol...we in that same van doing the same thing.....brilliant tune Kelly...;-)

  65. p.... c....

I could swear this was meant for my dad ❤️

  66. C.... W....

And no drums. Great tribute. RIP To a great character

  67. C.... J....

I still remember the first time I met Stuart exactly 17 years ago. He had a massive smile and was so bubbly greeting fans after Kelly played a solo gig at the Birmingham Irish centre. I met a very different Stuart 3 years later...this song is such a fitting tribute to him. Thank you Stereophonics for being a part of my life for the past 19 years. I'm so looking forward to the live shows next year. Glastonbury in 2019??

  68. R.... M....

I had my friend play the piano from this, so I could rap over it.
If anyone's interested in having a listen, it's on my channel.

  69. P.... B....

What a loss he was, they were never the same again without the might SC. Reminds me of Rainbows and Pots of Gold, which is about one of his chums too.

Maybe he'll write one about me next...

  70. A.... P....

    Beautiful song really touching

  71. a.... 0....

Bloody hell Kelly, thought My Hero from KTVA brought me to tears about my late mum, but then you go and do it again... damn you you songwriting genius!

  72. P.... H....

Stereophonics were never the same since Stuart left in 03. None of the drummers they had were on the same level as him.

  73. j.... s....

One of my favs off the new album. So simple but such a great track. RIP Stuart Cable

  74. J.... Z....

Is he really able to play the piano? I am listening to them since 1999.. but I don’t remember him playing the piano...

    J.... Z....

Jessica Zap he plays piano at almost every gig

    J.... Z....

Matthew Jones thank you for your answer ... unluckily I have never been to their gigs... :-((((

  75. T.... D....

Fantastic and means alot more to hear its about stu ....never forgot the day i first met u both in aberdare and the chemistry between u both xx

  76. A.... 1....

How fitting is it that 20 years on from their brilliant first album, Kelly includes a beautiful song as a tribute to the great drummer that is Stuart Cable. Its good to be reminded of the roots of the band time to time. As amazing as Stereophonics and Kelly Jones have always been, I do miss their old material - those were their golden days.

    A.... 1....

I fully agree and im sure yourself and most will say Kelly/Phonics are still producing such amazing music .... still a stupidly underrated band that is a proper hands down amazing band by far than most the bands we have seen producing so called music these days who are absolute dog $hit and have become massive in the game !!!!! Shows how messed up the music industry really is !!!!! Sad times :-( Kelly/Phonics forever xxxx

    A.... 1....

Can't wait to see these next month, beyond excited, hope he sings this one and some of the oldies!!

  77. h.... c....

    RIP Stuart...really beautiful song.
    Come to Chile guys!!!

  83. A.... P....

    Beautiful beautiful beautiful ❤

  84. m.... h....

    Beautiful

  85. R.... M....

Love this tune! KJ voice is beautiful at the best of times but this is absolutely perfect, you can hear the pain in the story he’s telling us of losing not only a band member but more importantly a friend! I lost my cousin 2 years ago and it makes me think of him as he was also a very proud Welsh man, just his voice and the words ‘I MISS YOU MAN’ Bravo KJ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  86. m.... ....

Oh Kelly that is beautiful. Heartbreaking, yet beautiful.

  87. D.... H....

It's for you son I love you big man dad x.

  96. C.... C....

Saw the original Stereophonics three peice band at Glastonbury 1998 and they stopped me in my muddy tracks, I have followed them to this day and last saw them live at Portsmouth this summer. Amazing group and deeply moving tribute to the one and only Stuart Cable R.I.P Man

  97. A.... M....

The best version of Stereophonics was definitely the one with Stuart.
