Steppenwolf - Sparkle Eyes Lyrics

Oh Woman, don't you know me?
Has it been so long that you forgot
I thought of you just yesterday
My time it has been dragging
And I've changed girl but so have you
Please don't turn your face away
It's in your eyes I know
Where did the sparkle go?

Sparkle eyes used to shine ev'ry day
God, I wish I never had seen you looking this way

Can't recall just who was wrong
Guess it doesn't matter now
To dredge the past I've no desire
But it hurts to feel your sadness
And to see the life you've led
Faceless fountains cooled your fire
It was mine not long ago
Where did the sparkle flow?

Sparkle Eyes used to smile at the rain
Don't I wish that I could see it again
Where did the sparkle go?

Now if I only knew where to begin
Girl, I'd try to break your fall and stop your spin
But time has changed us both too many ways
And I'm looking at a strange and empty face

And your eyes used to shine every day
If I had only never seen you lookin' this way
Those faceless fountains they cooled your fire
It was mine not so very long ago
Your eyes would laugh at the rain
You don't know how I wish I could see it again
I just can't stand to watch goin' down slow
Where did the sparkle go?

When it comes to great music with true meaning Steppenwolf covers all the bases

  2. B.... B....

After all these years, still brings tears to my eyes. Times past and people gone.

  3. g.... ....

Her Eye's still Sparkle after 45 years of Marriage and will till I'm Gone . Love Eternal. Mine Too

  4. M.... B....

I know this woman!! She's in Utah.

  5. B.... M....

Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Budgie, Sabbath, Zeppelin! Even the Beatles had so many great overlooked songs. I desire a radio station to play all the great overlooked songs and bands ( Vanilla Fudge, Mountain, Canned heat, Edgar Winter, etc... the list is too long)

  6. I.... V....

John Kay sings on just six songs out of 10 on this album.  Jerry Edmonton sings two songs, George Biondo one, and one song is instrumental.

    I.... V....

George sings two, "Jaded Strumpet" and "In hopes of a garden". Jerry only sings "I'm asking".

Cool car on the inside cover of the album...

    P.... W....

Paul Williams oh I wish I was a Oscar Mayer weiner lol

  9. k.... k....

I still have the original vinyl.

    k.... k....

Me too! Never be another band like Steppenwolf!

  10. S.... C....

This is an awful song, from the worst album the Wolf put out and which was the capstone to their demise

    S.... C....

You are a total jerk off

  11. E.... U....

My favorite band of all times. So underrated and overlooked. I bought this album when it came out and played it over and over. Just turned 59 and still love listening to Steppenwolf.
Had the opportunity to see John Kay & Steppenwolf live in Atlantic City NJ a few years ago and it was one of the best rock concerts I ever went to. Rock on John Kay - You are my music hero.

  12. P.... Z....

This is my favorite Steppenwolf tune with Renegade running a close second. Both a very emotional and well written.

  13. J.... S....

You have to smell this. It smells like unleaded gas in an old kick start ironhead sportster. Smells like the ohio river when you are riding across the 2nd bridge on a rigid chopper.

    J.... S....

ah.........the ironhead rollin thru louisville smell

  14. 5.... ....

One of the greatest lost album cuts of all time

  15. K.... L....

Man, what a great song !!!!!!  ...  Classic rock stations should be ashamed of themselves,  ignoring so many of these 'hidden' gems.  Thank you, El Groover.   :)

    K.... L....

Kevin Lopez It was called PAYOLA ANYBODY REMEMBERING THAT TERM?

    K.... L....

I hate commercial radio. It's the same crap over and over and over. I've never heard this classic song play on the radio and it should be.

  16. l.... r....

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet the lp is good, for me this the best cut , the guitar is bad ass , a sad song that rocks Kay is such a talented song writer thanks John for the music.

  17. R.... T....

Este album é uma obra prima do grupo Steppnwolf..

  18. P.... ....

    Goldie McJohn great keys!

  19. K.... ....

    What phenomenal band.

  20. S.... G....

Mars Bonfire was great,  wrote the national rock anthem . . . .  Born to Be Wild

  21. R.... R....

Another great one by Steppenwolf that brings back the memories of
the early 70's.  I had a good time back then, the music by groups like them never stopped

  22. C.... P....

The love of my life had eye's that sparkled, but the sparkle left from too much crap in her life.  Broke my heart.  Great song, thanks for uploading.  And I love the car on the inside of the jacket.

  23. S.... E....

This only makes me wish we were all back in these days when things were AWESOME, could leave your house unlocked and leave the keys in the car. Now look at today-not better at all..........

    S.... E....

As Barney Rubble used to say to Fred Flintstone, "I'm wit' choo, Fred!".

    S.... E....

No one left their doors unlocked, I'm sick and tired of that phrase. Hell you had theives and murderers back in the 60's and 70's,what with all of the drug addicts and killers back then. Tell that to Charles Manson's victims that you could leave your doors unlocked.

  24. C.... W....

One of the best Steppenwolf songs.

    C.... W....

    Indeed brother.

  25. r.... ....

A truly relevant song to anyone who's loved and lost at one time or another in their life. Timeless.

  26. L.... D....

No Doubt. One of the best and I think underrated from that era or any era. He fills and hit's those snare/symbol shots right with J.K.

  27. D.... M....

    great song,great drummer........

    D.... M....

Dianne Miller Jerry seemed to be a cool guy. I had a dream about him where he advised me about a song to use on a soundtrack for a movie script. Why that particular song, and why he would bother reaching out to me from the beyond, I'll never know.

We never met nor communicated, nor did he even know me when he was alive. No readon why he would know me, I was and am nobody. Nor did I try to contact his spirit seeking his advice.

But assuming it really was him, I'm taking his advice. Who knows, it might bring me luck on my project, which is right now mainly a novel. I'm just thinking ahead to the movie stage lol

  28. D.... M....

Be careful Mars Bonfire is my cousin.........................hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    D.... M....

Then please give him a BIG HUG AND A KISS from all of us fans saying "THANK YOU!!!!!!". And also we are STILL so sorry about Jerry, he was awesome and now rests in peace. God Bless......

    D.... M....

Really? I always thought his song "Ride With Me" was a masterpiece, his magnum opus really, and had the potential to restore Steppenwolf's career at a time when they were spiralling to the end.

Unfortunately, John Kay (I assume it was Kay because he always controlled the band with an iron fist) destroyed the song, chopping it up into a shell of it's original greatness.

As it was, it was still the best song on an otherwise very mediocre at best album. But it could have been so, so, so much more.

    D.... M....

@Second Coming Of Bast It should've been a big hit for them but it was released at a time when music was starting to lean more towards softer rock; had it been released a year or more earlier it would've been a hit but I think it is a fantastic song nonetheless.

    D.... M....

I learned to play drums to this album back in 71 as a kid great times

  29. t.... ....

I knocked tang tang to this song before.

  30. A.... ....

Great, wonderful, and sad. Check out John Kay "Movin On" and Mars Bonfire "Ride with me Baby."

  31. E.... ....

To newworldordersmasher ~ It's a sad story, as these things usually are, when folks are acting on the advice of lawyers instead of doing what they know to be right and fair. I think it's frakking crass that such a conflict should arise from a band that has shown such nous through their music.

In this instance, 'Fat Jack' & 'Desperation' come to mind :-\

♪♫...if you don't know where your goin'
I'll understand, I've lost the way myself
Oh, don't take that old road it leads to nowhere...♪♫ ☼ ;-j

  32. n.... ....

I wish John Kay would give the rest of band they`re royalties. John sued them for the rights to they`re music. John throw them a bone will ya please! Don`t be so greedy...

    n.... ....

newworldordersmasher Besides John Kay, the only one left alive out of the original five Steppenwolf members is lead guitarist Michael Monarch.

  33. L.... F....

John is one soulfull guy. Simply.

    L.... F....

Lukas Fin He is Hitler's slightly less evil illegitimate son

  34. u.... ....

damn fine song, yes a lot of soul, humility shown as well.

  35. e.... s....

Out of all of their songs I think this is the prettiest.

    e.... s....

    erik smith Hahahaha

  36. r.... ....

This song has alot of soul to it. At least for me it does.....

  37. S.... ....

Awesome song from a fantastic album.
