St. Vincent - Paris Is Burning Lyrics
I write to give word the war is over
Send my cinders home to mother
They gave me a medal for my valor
Leaden trumpets spit the soot of power
"When nobody is, 'cause nobody is
"Come sit right here and sleep
"While I slip poison in your ear"
We are waiting on a telegram
To give us news of the fall
I am sorry to report
Dear Paris is burning after all
We have taken to the streets
We are dancing a black waltz
Fair Paris is burning after all
Enclosed in this letter there's a picture
Black and white for your refrigerator
Sticks and stones have made me smarter
It's words that cut me under my armor
They say, "I'm on your side
"When nobody is, 'cause nobody is
"Come sit right here and sleep
"While I slip poison in your ear"
We are waiting on a telegram
To give us news of the fall
I am sorry to report
Dear Paris is burning after all
We have taken to the streets
In open rejoice revolting
We are dancing a black waltz
Fair Paris is burning after all
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris to the ground
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris, ashes now
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris to the ground
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris, ashes now
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris to the ground
Dance poor people, dance and drown
Dance fair Paris, ashes now

St. Vincent Paris Is Burning Comments
I remember when this song was an iTunes free download of the week.
"Come sit right here and sleep while I slip poison in your ear" was that a Hamlet reference? I freakin love this.
Is this based on the War of US and France against Germany?
15 april 2019 - literally
Annie...how could you...
Notre Damn
THIS WOMAN ACTUALLY PREDICTED THE FIRE HOLY CRAP
It's happened before too, not to Notre dame but....
This song is named after a documentary about gay ballroom culture in the 80s
I thought of this song when I heard that the Notre Dame cathedral was burning
SAME X 2
And during the riots
Same as you
Yes!!! Plus the opening in the novel Terra Nostra by Carlos Fuentes. If you can find an english version I highly recommend.
I'm sobbing so much I can't even hear this
Yes it's burning
This played today at my work. In love already.
That song length tho
Wow did you tell the future?
Note to four months ago:
Wait until April. xD
It seems like a Queen's song of 70s

BIG Fan of St. Vincent, especially Annie Clark. She is such an immense talent. This song feels reminiscent of Kate Bush (who I dearly love as well).
I'm burning too
Is this song about the Rothschilds buying England?? Thats the first thing that came to mind
It's actually about hurricane Katrina
Man, I love the main verse riff in this, but the "deedledeedleedledeedee" riff of the chorus kinda detracts from it :(
Nihl Echo I love it lol
play it in 1.5speed normal speed is to slow
What the heck you guys.. I literally just played this and it smells like something is burning. That’s spooky.
Spotify recommended this beautiful song for me awhile back. I tried to listen to some of her other stuff but I found it wasn't as good. Any of her fans know of any songs similar to this one?
Kate Frost All My Stars Aligned, pretty much the whole album of Marry Me, Oh My God (from Actor) and the Strangers.
Its like Shape of my heart with Paranoid Android.
This song is so surreal. I love it to death.
I don't know why this makes me so emotional...
Bill Burr's podcast brought me here :)
Only 9 people disliked this song... what the fuck is wrong with them?
she would be awesome in a metal band
Almost too good to be famous. Maybe she can elevate popular music yet.
Can't believe I've only just discovered this, this song is so amazingly eerie and gorgeous!
Definitely my favorite song off Marry Me the intensity The track builts is astonishing.
Just like Marrow: eerie start, then a loud chorus (just how I like it), then a bit less eerie and then BOOM! One of the best from Marry Me.
How chilling and ironic is the fact that I first heard this song at le Bataclan, the hall that was attacked in Paris ! It was November 2006. She was opening act for Sufjan Stevens
This is extremely applicable to current events
@Joel Sebagala again super late but where did you find this explanation ?
It's applicable in April 15, 2019
@Mark Jose makes me so sad
Spoke too soon buddy
I feel like this song is the centerpiece of the album (even if it's at the middle of the tracklist I think it's deeper than that). Anyway it is one of her best ever
the intro of this song is insanely beautiful
Olivia Sun the whole song is insanely beautiful.
THE WHOLE ALBUM IS INSANELY BEAUTIFUL
"Sticks and stones have made me smarter, it's words that cut me under my armor."
I love that line
+Storråda Sygr-yda HoNk :o)

The Left must be jizzing in their pants at this song
Man. I listened to her newer albums first. I think I like this better.
I really like the first 16 seconds :)
I don't know why, but I really like the bit from 3:06–3:15.
