St. Vincent - Marry Me Lyrics

Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone

Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so sweet to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I'm gone

Many people wanna make money, make love
Make friends, make peace with death
But most mainly wanna win the game
They came to win, they want to come out ahead

But you, you're a rock with a heart
Like a socket I can plug into at will
And will you guess when I come around next?
I hope your open sign is blinking still

So marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone

Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I'm gone
You won't realize I've gone

As for me, I would have to agree
I'm as fickle as a paper doll
Being kicked by the wind
When I touch down again
I'll be in someone else’s arms

Oh, John, come on
We’ll do what married people do
Oh, John, come on
(I don’t care what you are)

Let’s do what Mary and Joseph did
(I want to marry you)
Without the kid
(I want to marry you)

So marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I've gone

Marry me, John, marry me, John
I'll be so good to you
You won't realize I’ve gone
You won't realize I’ve gone

You won't realize I’ve gone
You won't realize I’ve gone
You won't realize I’ve gone
You won't realize I’ve gone

Many people wanna make money, make love
(Marry me, John)
Make friends, make peace with death
(Marry me, John)

Many people wanna make money, make love
(Marry me, John)
Make friends, make peace with death
(Marry me, John)

She is tantalizingly pretty. Looking at her lips as "any" passes across them puts me into almost a trance like state. Then the outro which I can only describe as beauty connecting with chaos is brilliant! Annie you have gained yourself a new fan! P.S. your Music man guitar is incredible

    Annie thinks she isn't annie

  5. C.... ....

Holy shit the meaning behind these lyrics is just too good for how simple they are.

The lyrics make me think that the topic of this song is depression:

''I'm not the carpet you walk on'' (Trying to convince yourself to be more confident)
''I'm not one small atomic bomb'' (What most people see as the stereotype for depression)
''I'm not any, any, any, any, any...anything at all''/''I'm not anyone you'll see'' (The feeling that you're not there, that you're ignored/a ghost)
    ''Now, now'' (Calming down)
''I'm not your yellow brick street'' (You're not whimsical at all sometimes/often times)
''You don't mean that, say you're sorry'' (Your beliefs kind of warp and become more angry, more nihilistic or pessimistic and you not only begin to blame yourself but others as well)

The usage of ''I'm not'' makes me think about depression the most, though. I relate to this a lot and today I just got the message.

I think you're dead on with that. And the chaos at the end of the song seems a lot like how depression feels.

Dayum! Two years later, and such a good interpretation!

Oh hey! I also like that when she says “any any any thing at all”, it also sounds like “Annie Annie Annie thing at all”. Making sound like she’s not herself!

    you asked for it

  11. K.... J....

I always thought it was "Any Annie, Any Annie"

    K.... J....

+Kenneth Cramblit - But...there is only one Annie!

    K.... J....

I wonder if that's intentional, as in "I'm not Annie".

  12. D.... H....

I think Annie Clark intended the play on words with "I'm not any, any..." because it sounds like:
I'm not Annie, Annie, Annie... "  Just a theory.  Whata ya think?  Maybe?

    D.... H....

Funny, I've thought the same thing. I'll be sure to ask her if we ever meet and become friends

    D.... H....

    Definitely.

    D.... H....

    I heard Laurel

  13. e.... ....

I've risen in love. Beautiful music. Thank you.

  14. i.... ....

Wonder if her saying "any" singled out over and over again was meant to be a double entendre for her own name; Annie. If so that's pretty clever writing.

    i.... ....

That's the way I heard it.

  15. B.... ....
