Springsteen, Bruce - Terry's Song Lyrics
Well they built the Titanic to be one of a kind, but many ships have ruled the seas
They built the Eiffel Tower to stand alone, but they could build another if they please
Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Egypt, are unique I suppose
But when they built you, brother, they broke the mold
And sometimes something comes along and you know it's for sure the only one
The Mona Lisa, the David, the Sistine Chapel, Jesus, Mary, and Joe
And when they built you, brother, they broke the mold
When they built you, brother, they turned dust into gold
When they built you, brother, they broke the mold
They say you can't take it with you, but I think that they're wrong
'Cause all I know is I woke up this morning, and something big was gone
Gone into that dark ether where you're still young and hard and cold
[harmonica bridge]
Now your death is upon us and we'll return your ashes to the earth
And I know you'll take comfort in knowing you've been roundly blessed and cursed
But love is a power greater than death, just like the songs and stories told
And when she built you, brother, she broke the mold
That attitude's a power stronger than death, alive and burning her stone cold
When they built you, brother
[harmonica bridge]

22 people are complete idiots
Dammit Bruce!! this is the first I have ever heard this song and I am have been sobbing since :04 seconds into it. I lost my brother to suicide in 2008 and it crumbled my world. So powerful to hear it put into words. Thanks Bruce.
i had the pleasure of doing some work for T great man RIP
damn fine writing. that whole love is a power stronger than death line just gets me everytime. word.
I played piano and a friend sang this at my dad's funeral last year. He was a WWII vet, went to school on the GI bill and became a successful engineer and inventor - and also one of the most singular, unusual and maddening men anyone ever knew. This song fit him to a T - Thanks Bruce:)
A life is a beautiful, mysterious thing.
Chords?
verry touching
I miss my brother like you wouldn't believe, or maybe you would?!!
Best of luck to all the people that have lost close family to cancer... A pause is great... But it needs to be followed by some action.
RIP CWL

Even though Bruce and I are about the same age, I've always considered him one of my "Hero's...." There is a certain way Springsteen cultivates his songs that turn otherwise ordinary events and people into the legendary, the extraordinary, lifted into the heavens far beyond the scope of this firmament we call Earth. Bruce has a way of making friends with just about everyone, except maybe the Devil and people with nothing but evil in their hearts, but even then Bruce always seems to leave the door of redemption slightly cracked, in his deep heart there is a faith so strong, love and honesty always get entry. I write poems, songs, stories, and tall tales with about the same magic and expertise as "The Boss," we're both sincere and straightforward in our songs, but he adds a luster that's punctuated and polished by that Fender Esquire that no one else is quite capable of, its his sword and shield. Sometimes Bruce Springsteen fights his way across a landscape filled with Angels and Devils hiding around each corner, taking everyone who hears his clarion cry with him up the hill to have a look at the "Promised Land." I believe that Bruce Springsteen is the most talented songwriter of our generation, possibly of all time, but he doesn't seem to project that image in his wondrous works such as "The Ghost of Tom Joad" and "Nebraska," where like John Steinbeck, Bruce serves us the pure and unpolished, sometimes slightly roughed up mirror image of ourselves as we are truly are, and its not always pretty or nice. If Bruce Springsteen were my brother, I could not be any happier than I am now in having the Privilege to have lived among his people during our time in history.
He makes extraordinary the lives of ordinary people.
when i first heard this i was blown away still am
My dad and I are playing this at my uncle's funeral. He was loved by all, brought joy to everyone, and was taken too early in a life that he lived to it's fullest. Farewell from the bottom of my heart to the Pope of Gov'y. I'll miss you Uncle Geoff
Recently I lost an uncle, Terry. He was a brother and best friend to my dad and my dad asked me to listen to this song especially for him. Now I see why . It was basically written for him. RIP x

2 people need a PSYCHIATRIST....for real!
There's a FB page called "There's a Springsteen Song For That"......it's so true. He's able to write a song for practically everything. He is the Master for sure, THE BOSS.

But he had a heart attack.. And I will never give up.. I will live my life for my father.. I love him, And this song is his song.. Terry's Song <3 Rest in peace dad.. I'll never give up..For you..
Perhaps the greatest song ever written. Nuff said.
This song IS my mother. Rest In Peace, and I love you.
My parents bought me this album the xmas before my grandad died. In the 6 months afterwards I moved into his house until it was sold, to sort all the belongings and furniture, and i listened to this album a lot. This song, and Gypsy biker, will always make me think of him.
My dad woulda been 62 today. Gone for 15 years. When they built you, dad....
This is such an amazing song .We have all being unfortunate to have lost someone who broke the mould, but on the other hand it was a great pleasure and privilege to have loved them

I still remember the first time I heard this song at the radio, I loved it instantanetly.I did'nt know this Terry but it brokes my heart evertime I hear it.What a beautiful tribute to his friend, Bruce is a amazing songwriter.
After posting this video when Bruce first released this song, I have been touched by the comments. Both for the Magovern Family, but all others who have used this posting to mourn. Bruce has given us all a gift by writing this song, and allowing it to be posted on Yuotube.
To all of us who have lost loved ones, each one special in thier own right, each one breaking the mold........
Scotty

the greatest tribute song ever written. Period.
My daddy was always a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. He passed away on November 10, 2009 due to cancer. Now, I listen to bruce more than ever. It always makes me think of my daddy. He was the strongest man I ever knew and is now my angel. I love you, Daddy. RIP. -When they built you, father, they broke the mold-
Today is the one year anniversary of my dad passing. This was the last song song that he listened too before leaving this world and I couldn't think of a better one to describe the best man I ever knew. RIP Dad. We miss you.

Hi long time bruce fan but never heard this one before, anyone help me out who was Terry? Thanks
Thanks so much for putting this wonderful tribute to Bruce's close friend together!
Ya got Soul!
O'god, sorry for your loss:(
This is one of the greatest songs of The Boss!
UR grandfather was a great person my dad knew him for over 20 yrs he is the reason i went to see bruce rip terry
He putt so much feeling in to the song, and I don't mean just in the lyrics but in everything, he probably had tears in hes eyes or even cried when he was recording it.
I would like to dedicate this song to my friend Ron Vernon right now... Ron passed on the 23rd of Oct... He was a fellow police officer and my partner in 1998-99... He retired 2 years ago, and is now gone... God Speed Ron!!!
Thats just beautiful
An ode to friendship... moving and emotional... one of my favs from 'Magic'.
No one will ever come close. The boss is untouchable
Your right. Of course he can sing! He has some very good songs. Sorry.
He really can't sing. The lyrics are great, but the melodie is not strong. His voice is very irritating in this song. Sorry.
The song reminds me of my grandmother that passed away last february. I hope they play it in Oslo, this summer. :)
Beautiful song!(L)
For the poster asking what the term meant.
Springsteen is referring to mould casting.
Casting using a mould is a manufacturing process as used in ceramics and metals to create any shape such as unique vase.
"Broke the mould"= one of a kind.
the song touched me....My buddy who passed was a big Bruce fan with me. We went to so many Bruce concerts together. I did a video to this song remembering him. He was also the kind of guy who, "broke the mold." thanks
beautiful video.
rip terry.
Thank you Bruce ...more evidence that you are the best living songwriter. They broke your mold as well, amigo.
Beautifull...
I wanna make something like that myself for my recently passed away friend. What software works best?
its basically doing something never done before--something unique. i guess it can also be seen as, if you break the mold, you out-do yourself.
This is a fantastic tribute... when I first heard this song it moved me... and I immediately thought of our #322 Union Brothers we lost in the Tropicana collapse in Atlantic City in 2003.
Beautiful job. Great Tribute.
