Springsteen, Bruce - Last To Die Lyrics

We took the highway till the road went black
We marked Truth Or Consequences on our map*
A voice drifted up from the radio
We saw the voice from long ago

Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake

The kids asleep in the backseat
We're just countin' the miles you and me
We don't measure the blood we've drawn anymore
We just stack the bodies outside the door

Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die for a mistake

The wise men were all fools
What to do

The sun sets in flames as the city burns
Another day gone down as the night turns
And I hold you here in my heart
As things fall apart

A downtown window flushed with light
Faces of the dead at five (faces of the dead at five)
A martyr's silent eyes
Petition the drivers as we pass by

Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Whose blood will spill, whose heart will break
Who'll be the last to die

Who'll be the last to die for a mistake
The last to die for a mistake
Darlin' will tyrants and kings fall to the same fate
Strung up at your city gates
And you're the last to die for a mistake

Springsteen, Bruce Last To Die Comments
  1. m.... ....

After the comments I listened to the Pet Shop Boys version. Not my type of music, Bruce is Boss.

  2. A.... g....

I thought this was a psb song

  3. y.... m....

prefer pet shop boys version this is rubbish

  4. j.... ....

People seriously saying the Pet Shop Boys cover is better than the maestro's original ? Give me a break. Bruce blows everyone out of the water. Absolutely incomparable.

  5. H.... B....

Both BS and PSB versions are great. PSB version sounds much more refined and poignant. But this is fantastic, too, That "la la la" vocal in PSB version is a touch of genious, though.

  6. S.... L....

If Bruce hadn't written it the PSB wouldn't haven't been able to cover it.

  7. A.... M....

Just makeing my reservations that’s all.

  8. A.... M....

Well since people are like they don’t want to be left behind. And as it know one cares about me sure family I’ll go last. It seems like I swallow all this tragedy everyday. Been to To many funerals anyway. What’s a few more.

  9. V.... E....

    Prefer this version.

  10. C.... E....

Everyone hear is high, I've never heard of psb, Bruce Springsteen is the boss and one of the greatest artists of all the time and in my opinion the second best and this is his song and he's owns it in a way only Bruce can do. Long live the boss.

  11. .... ....

    Are you all deaf?
Bruce version is so much better.
    Bruce!! Bruce!!

  12. C.... P....

    Love love love

  13. D.... I....

blegh, so many Pet Shop boy lovers here. Electronic music: no skill

    *grabs popcorn*

    D.... I....

    music is music, dumb ass

    D.... I....

funny that you mention popcorn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK3ZP6frAMc

  14. T.... T....

listen to Love is a bourgeois construct by PSB

  15. L.... H....

Am I the only one who doesn't like the PSB version

  16. S.... ....

    The Boss <3

  17. I.... C....

    Me and my baby Doreen

  18. N.... C....

PSB version of Bruce Springsteen's song Las to die. Both are amazing but the beats and melancholic of PSB version are simply addictive.

  19. n.... d....

Why Are you taking this down? I was about to put it in my mix list

  20. P.... K....

    Magic brought me here 🎩

  21. I.... H....

    Great song!!!
Like the Bruce version, however, the PSB did it again in my opinion.
Have you ever wonder why nobody (of established artists) covers PSB songs? Because they are masters of mastering and remixing, and how could you cover their song and make it sound better or more interesting than the original?
    Still, respect for Bruce...

    I.... H....

+Ivan Huljak PSB is a nice cover, but sry, it just ain't the original.

  22. Q.... N....

One song, two versions, two rays of light through a single prizm

  23. A.... K....

    No random song you idiot

  24. A.... ....

I only think in the nahnahnahnahnahnah chorus

  25. K.... K....

Wow!! Coming from the PSB version, I like Bruce's original quite a bit! It's night and and day.

  26. A.... ....

I could say that psb version is sader than the original but ......both are
    great

  27. K.... K....

My partner is a big fan of Springsteen and I'm a big fan of PSB. I like both versions in there own way. But I would say PSB gets in your head with the na-na-na-na-na bit! The words are typical Springsteen. Great song.

    K.... K....

Yeah, The NA NA, is the Best Part !! Peace :):)

  28. T.... ....

    pet shop is brill

  29. J.... C....

PSB's version is great in its own way. Just by having them cover it takes the lyrics away from the original context and puts it in the "Go West" and "Somewhere" school of covers (conjures images of the struggle with AIDS and moves to promised lands that ended in sadness, etc). The versions are not comparable as the styles are so different. Just enjoy them each in their own way.

  30. S.... F....

Love both versions and love the lyrics!
''The sun it sets in flames as the city burns'' part sounds nicer in PSB version I'd say :D

  31. g.... ....

    Bruce!!!

  32. L.... N....

I heard the PSB version at first too. I still like it better, but the original is somehow more genuine.

  33. J.... F....

same here - the PSB remake made me wonder what the orginal was like.  Both of them are very good.

  34. l.... ....

Pet Shop Boys brought me here. Their version is better but this is good too

    l.... ....

Seriously? What they did to Halo Spaceboy was unforgiveable. The UK got weird with discos, fake drums and Juno 106's sad, The had Slade The Sweet..Beatles. Good stuff.

    l.... ....

@Brian Wurch PSB only remixed Hallo Spaceboy. Unforgivable? It's a much more listenable song than the demo-like version on Outside. Slade, The Sweet, and Beatles? You do know time marches on, right?

    l.... ....

Time does march on yes youth to death. Health to sickness. Soul music and Bach to 4 chord nasty rap and gay synth one note video game machine sounds over a metronome. I don't know what  went Shiite first, the actual sterilized inclusive youth or lowest common denominator mass media degenerate drivel they fed the new generations.

    l.... ....

@Brian Wurch ah, you're one of those. Go away, troll.

    l.... ....

@Tommy Lamm I'm into classic rock, hate dance music, the closest I get to dance is Pet Shop Boys' the guy is right' they don't cover the song they straight up own it! they are the electronic answer to The Smiths' just listen to their song 'Kings Cross or the Behaviour album, one of the best albums by any artist

  35. S.... D....

One more vote to the PSB version. SO MUCH BETTER.
I was expecting that Springsteen version was superior, but no. I don't think so.
PSB did some arrangement, including some note alteration to the chorus that got even better.
I was ignoring Electric up till now. But it is surely a great PSB album. I hope they keep releasing more albums like this one, under their own label, with more liberty to work and do things like this.

  36. S.... M....

    ONLY PET SHOP BOYS

  37. T.... ....

Don't want to sound cocky, but the PSB version is so much better.

    T.... ....

    The PSB version is lame.

Now, if people wish to offer comparative opinions on one song versus another, try doing so with a little objectivity.

The PSB version may be very good or so much better or the ONLY version basis within the particular genre the PSB are accustomed to uniquely playing. This can also apply to what a listener is accustomed to hearing.. If one continually or exclusively listens to pop-synth-beat sounding tunes then, yes, the PSB version is better

This applies similarly to BS. Within the genre and his unique style alone he is accustomed to playing it is a phenomenal song. Same for the listening audience and their preferences as well.

I've listened to varying styles of music for 50 years. Even heard some of the 1970s precursors to the PSB, although minus the vocals I should add.

But, LOL ah ha ha, after all that was expressed above, objectivity, preference and all, I still find the PSB version of the Bruce Springsteen song "The Last to Die" as invigorating as spent lukewarm dishwater. Or flavor that has leaked out from a popsicle. Or,...ha ha ha.

Are you getting the idea now?
Comparing different artistic versions of one song incorporating different styled genres is somewhat a wasted effort. Kind of like comparing fruit to wild buffalo meat. Enjoy each version for as much as they are and for as much as one can. If not, lol, I'll be back trashing your comparative choice opinions of music if required.

    T.... ....

Roger Hewlett , I lol at your use of 'opinion' and 'objectivity' in the same sentence

  38. j.... i....

Prefiero la de los pet ;3

    j.... i....

    j.... i....

    j.... i....

    rubbish

  39. r.... ....

My mouse and my keyboard brought me here.

  40. M.... H....

Hope this prevents more nations engaging in foreign wars.

  41. M.... G....

    I like better with PSB!!!

  42. C.... P....

ok, PSB brought me here too. Love their version, with that genial rythm, that special voice, that particular sound which make the song epic.

  43. t.... ....

    PSB brought me here 2....

  44. d.... m....

bruce, you the man baby. You write, and sing, from a source inside that resonates with the part inside everybody that is truthful, even if that truth stings. Thanks for grabbing my flailing hand and carrying me forward.

  45. r.... ....

I hadn't known about this great song until PSB remade it! They are genius in remaking songs!

  46. d.... u....

PSB made me rediscover this great song... Springsteen is genial!

  47. S.... S....

PSB - brought me here too.

  48. E.... P....

Actually I find this version much better than PSB's version. The version with PSB is also very good!

  49. C.... G....

It sounds great with his voice and the music adaptation is also great. I love it too!!!

  50. L.... M....

I LOVE VERSION OF PSB THE VOICE OF NEIL IS GENIAL !!!!!

  51. c.... ....

MrMusicMad12 must be wondering what have happened to his video suddenly getting all these comments, well: IT'S THE PET SHOP BOYS darling!

  52. M.... M....

    Here because of PSB!

  53. J.... C....

I'm here cos of PSB too. I hope psb version release it as single. Remember when PSB covered 'Always on my Mind'. Went to number 1 Xmas 1988 (or was 1987 / 89?). Maybe this song too? If only...

  54. r.... ....

    Both versions are great

  55. P.... ....

The PSB brought me here as well. The Boss should be proud. Funny how this all reminds me of when U2 were asked what they thought of PSB doing Where the streets have no name, their reply was "what have we, what have we, done to deserve this?

  56. T.... Z....

PSB cover is very interesting but original is good too :-)

  57. T.... H....

i like the PSB version better... strange but normaly its the original version the best version. But not now

  58. S.... m....

    Pet Shop Boys!

  59. E.... A....

Me too arrived here, curious about the original version of the song, covered by Pet Shop Boys in their forthcoming album

  60. A.... P....

Chris Lowe's sister presented this song to the Boys and they found it great for a cover. Tha PSB version is great.

  61. D.... ....

I likely never would have known of this track, had Pet Shop Boys not covered it on their new album. I came here to get to know the Springsteen original. The PSB version is beautiful, and really highlights Bruce's fine work on this track!

  62. F.... L....

Pet Shop Boys brought me here ! :)

  63. p.... ....

Pet Shop Boys brought me here with their fantastic cover version of this song :)

  64. F.... ....

I came here because of the Pet Shop Boys version.
    Both versoions rock!

  65. c.... ....

Well, Yes indeed. I never heard of this song. Until I heard the news that the Pet Shop Boys will cover it. It will be much better. I hate real guitars and drums and live music. I want synths, drumcomputers and vocal sampled computer sounds. Bruce has some nice songs too, though.

  66. t.... s....

I'm so curious what the PSB version will sound like! I also wonder how they came to want to cover this song....

  67. I.... ....

    I love this !!
