Springsteen, Bruce - Girls In Their Summer Clothes Lyrics

Well the street lights shine
Down on Blessing Avenue
Lovers they walk by
Holdin' hands two by two

A breeze crosses the porch
Bicycle spokes spin 'round
Jacket's on, I'm out the door
Tonight I'm gonna burn this town down

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

Kid's rubber ball smacks
Off the gutter 'neath the lamp light
Big bank clock chimes
Off go the sleepy front porch lights

Downtown the store's alive
As the evening's underway
Things been a little tight
But I know they're gonna turn my way

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

Frankie's Diner's
Over on the edge of town
Neon sign spinnin' round
Like a cross over the lost and found

Fluorescent lights
Flicker above Bob's Grill
Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks "fill?"
And says "penny for your thoughts now my poor Bill"

She went away
She cut me like a knife
Had a beautiful thing
Maybe you just saved my life

In just a glance
Down here on Magic Street
Love's a fool's dance
I ain't got much sense but I still got my feet

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by

La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la

  4. J.... C....

    Bless you Annette

  5. s.... w....

God, I miss how he did his arrangements and SOUND, circa "The River".

    s.... w....

Great point about his arrangements and the key change in "Girsl in Their Summer Clothes" is just perfect and brings an extra layer of nostalgia.

  6. F.... M....

Most beautiful song. Don’t like Springsteen’s songs or voice. This one brings me to my knees.

  7. J.... H....

Bring back Summer UK July 19, cracking tune this

👇 Press here if you love Bruce

  13. K.... G....

The most Ian McNabb song that Ian never wrote.....everything about it. It’s astonishing it’s so similar to IM style of writing and the vocal delivery.

  14. T.... A....

This song begs for a Ricky 12 string!

  15. M.... L....

MAGICAL song. Terribly recorded! Muddy...notice how "There goes my miracle " is CRYSTAL clear!

    M.... L....

Disagree 100 percent. I can’t stand the production on WS and the film version is even worse. Lyrically, the songs are too rhymey and lack narratives. I love everything about the Magic album. GITSC is Bruce’s greatest song about getting older.

  16. D.... H....

Flip me what a artist bruce springsteen is top notch

  17. F.... P....

Bruce has always found a,way to relate to his fans through h I 's songs and that is why he us,the best ever I am 49 saw him 186 timed met clearance Steve Maddog as well as max his songs are my life at different times ty Bruce

  18. R.... A....

    Bruce da boss

  19. j.... ....

Yet another Springsteen classic. Only Dylan beats him as a songwriter as far as I am concerned. Been a huge fan since 1982 and seen him 24 times.

    j.... ....

You're so lucky! I finally saw him in 2016...after 30 years listening to him.

  20. h.... ....

This is one of the two or three best songs he ever wrote.

  21. j.... f....

    Yeah,like that...

  22. c.... p....

Cette chanson est un orchestre de bonheur.

  23. c.... p....

Tout s'envole, dès lors que... Une once de tissus suggère tant de poésie. Nos esprit complices. Légèreté de l'âme. Chaque histoire seulement inouïe et sa contribution musicale. Girls in their summer clothes. Mes pieds battent la mesure. Tout est en joie.

  24. c.... p....

Une belle mélodie or a juicy fruit, delicat and full of love . Tout simplement. Imaginer une histoire, la faire aboutir. Par amour.

  25. c.... p....

  26. T.... ....

I never got Bruce Springsteen, but boy at 53 years old, after an unexpected "Indian Summer" in my mid 40s, did this song song hit me like a cannon in slow motion, going through my body and reverberating in my bones as I became taught to withstand its force. Keeping sadness away and trying not be sentimental. I still can't believe its over, when I thought I had cracked the code. It's over, and they pass me by.

  27. V.... G....

Al mattino quando mi sento giu Metto questa canzone e automaticamente Salto giù dal letto.

  28. M.... S....

I was singing this to myself a few days ago while I was skiing and the wind blew the snow right in my face. It was awesome.

  29. D.... ....

    Such a beautiful song

  30. R.... G....

I remember standing outside the stadium during his Glasgow gig in 2016 waiting to get in and we could all hear them soundchecking with this song. Under rated song.

  31. M.... P....

Other than Born to Run this is the only song I truely loved by Springsteen. Totally different than anything else he did.

  32. R.... D....

Glad to see all the other folks that love this song! I did hear a cover of it by some band, always a mark of something special.

  33. B.... L....

I love this song - LOVE IT. Fantastic production and incredible singing and instrumentation. Lucky enough to have heard Bruce perform it live years ago in Newark. After reading his autobiography, I'll always be grateful for his heart and soul. He speaks to the generations.

  34. J.... V....

    GREATEST song

  35. d.... m....

I just came across a video of all my animals in it that have since passed away. I went around petting all of them, it was a good day. The song in the background was this song.

I want to hear the string arrangement alone. I love this song!

  41. R.... B....

Heard this song for the first time today, and I was like 'Oh no, this sounds like Bruce and I really like it." Guy is so unusual how i can dislike so many of his songs and love a bunch too.

  42. S.... F....

    its a great song...ty

  43. M.... L....

This song just does it for me. It sounds like vintage Boss in some ways.

  44. j.... f....

It's not Asbury to me. It's New Castle,Indiana...

  45. A.... A....

    Simplesmente magnífico

  46. R.... F....

I've only recently properly discovered the pure songwriting skillage of the Boss (just a day before my 36th birthday) - this is one of my faves, can't wait to dig out more of his gems.

  47. A.... L....

Halle there i'm a brasilian fan

  48. A.... L....

The Best of all time....Bruce the King. ....

  49. J.... R....

Makes the hair on your neck stand up,such is this song's brilliance. It's a mystery why this song isn't better regarded. It's a classic feel good Summer Song

  50. J.... R....

The essential start of Summer when i heard this song.May 1st tomorrow and seeing girls in Summer clothes is always delightful even at my age. Bruce always Rocks and he's no Spring Chicken.Gives a real lift hearing this fine song

  51. D.... V....

As I'm 4 days older than Bruce, I can always relate to his music. Can remember when I had a shot at those girls, now, too old. Oh well, time was!!

    D.... V....

    David Viar
Don’t give up yet mate. Some of those blue rinse ladies look damn fine in a certain light on their way to the post office.

    D.... V....

There also some pretty feminine grandpas out there in a judgement free zone i have to say, really low on test at their age, but pretty experienced and well-behaved.

  52. R.... S....

Such a happy inspirational song I can almost feel spring and summer coming on

  53. v.... b....

    Best song EVER 🍺😎

  54. J.... B....

what's wrong with girls with no clothes. just a joke.

  55. B.... H....

In the cool of the evening light

  56. A.... J....

I heard this song once on my vans radio a couple of years ago.from that one listen, I never forgot the tune and hummed and whistled it while I was working right uptil recently when I heard it on YouTube. Great songwriting.

  57. S.... A....

    Great Bruce.

  58. j.... ....

    Yet another Springsteen masterpiece

  59. G.... ....

Listening to this in January is such a bad idea. Now I want summer again. But Bruce is so good I can’t stop listening

  60. A.... J....

This cheered me up one morning driving to work along Southend seafront in Essex England. It was the first time I’d heard the song. I’ll never forget the moment. Put me in a great mood for the whole day working on my own. Couldn’t stop whistling the tune till I got home.

  61. T.... O....

    Excellente

  62. d.... ....

Keen fans of the Magnetic Fields brought me here.

    d.... ....

It really is crazy how much it sounds like a Magnetic Fields song, right down to the "La, la, la" outro. I saw one publication speculate that Bruce might have been turned on to them by Arcade Fire, since they've run into each other a lot.

    d.... ....

MagusMirificus yup even right when the song starts. The percussion and sound is way deep with that unique Magnetic Fields Sound. And then his vocal delivery and melody choices. Bruce probably got way into the Magnetic Fields and then wrote this later without really noticing. It happens.

    d.... ....

Here's what Stephin said: A few years ago he came out with this wonderful song called 'Girls In Their Summer Clothes', and all my friends came out and went ‘OMG Bruce Springsteen is directly imitating Stephin’. And it turned out that it just sounded like The Ronettes, and I’ve written a lot of songs that sound like them. [Springsteen] isn’t imitating me by imitating the Ronettes, but he is definitely imitating The Ronettes. So yes, I consider myself as being like [him] in that we like the same things - The Ronettes and folk music. I also like experimental music, which I think he’s probably not particularly captivated by. He also likes bar room rock that I don’t really care about. I wouldn’t feel too depressed about having to limit myself to the rock of the early sixties, fortunately I don’t have to limit myself.

  63. J.... H....

Innocence and understanding of first love. Poetic wrap around beauty. Cinematic reminder of life and young love.

    J.... H....

    Jim Herd
    Lovely description.

  64. M.... P....

Heard this song for the first time today, didnt even know who it was. Fab.

  65. I.... ....

Puts me right on the beach of Ocean City Maryland between the ages of 10 + 14 years old lusting over the girls in their summer clothes on the beach and you were the dog chasing the car.

  66. t.... ....

Still keep coming back to this great song!

  67. J.... F....

    triumph/tragedy

  68. d.... p....

    Great Song Great performer

  69. C.... H....

Gorgeous, lyrical ballad, one of his best, but horrendous mixing and stonewall mastering....the entire tune is crushed against the "digital zero" level to the point that it is painful to the ears.

  70. C.... I....

makes it seem like summer already

  71. T.... M....

God his voice is so sexy in this song

  81. P.... L....

I'm not normally a Springsteen fan but this one is wonderful!

    P.... L....

@cluesign That’s interesting. I like this song a ton too. It’s in the style of a band called Magnetic Fields, check them out.

    P.... L....

My ex-girlfriend was big on Bwuce and I hated it. Couldn't stand to drive with her. After we broke up, I heard this song and called her machine to let her know I finally found a Springsteen song I liked.

    P.... L....

Sounds a lot like the Icicle Works / Ian McNabb

    P.... L....

Listen to his 19 albums since 1982. The guy is incomparable as a songwriter in my opinion.

    P.... L....

    I meant since 1972 !!

  82. L.... ....

  94. A.... M....

After 37 years..i married my 1969-73 HS sweetheart Alan Guidice on Oct 30 2011. I had this song on the playlist for the day as I loved it. I lost him to illness on sept 26 2015, barely 4wks before our 4th anniv. Yesterday, april 17, 2016, for the first time since our wedding day, I heard it playing in the store I was shopping in. It stopped me cold and transported me right back to our special day. Alan is always with me. Thank you, Bruce

    A.... M....

Ok, that made me cry. 😢❤️🤗

    A.... M....

    It's that sort of a song,Annette.Bless you.

    A.... M....

Annette Maffeo when we lose someone it's those things ..like a song that bring them right back....this is a song that should have had more airplay as it's very underrated...

    A.... M....

What a beautiful sentiment. A song like this can ease the pain a little as it calls back to happier times. I listen to it and it transports me back to days gone by. Good times when life was so much simpler.

    A.... M....

    Un forte abbraccio dall'Italia 👍

  95. M.... V....

This commie son of gun is STILL writing great music...lol ...saw the Boss at the Stone Pony when he was just starting and I am still listening to him

    M.... V....

    That's called humanity - don't buck it

    M.... V....

Nebraska is platinum not multi platinum. The others are though. The first two must have been at least somewhat successful for them to be multi platinum(plus they both made the top 100 in the album charts).

    M.... V....

"Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ," released in early January, 1973, and, "The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle," released in November, 1973," each initially sold fewer than 20,000 copies. Much later, in the mid-80s, after he had become Bruce Springsteen, they sold multi-platinum. I don't think even, "Born to Run," (1975) initially sold many over 500,000, if that, until later, probably after "Darkness," (1978) or, "The River," (1980) were released. I first saw him on the Darkness tour, and he was still playing venues that held less than 5,000. It took 20 years from playing supermarket openings in 1966 to selling out six concerts at Giants Stadium and four at the LA Coliseum in August 1986. He has *earned* his success, his stature, and his income.

    M.... V....

These things are easy enough to look up(well to get some info anyway). Just go to the riaa website. Anyway, for one thing Born to Run was released before albums were certified platinum so it's hard to tell. It did go gold soon after it was released but I'll admit it probably didn't go multi platinum until after Born to the USA and in fact it wasn't certified any kind of platinum until 1986 but then again the RIAA doesn't always keep close tabs on albums or do tallies unless the record company requests figures. But if your point is that Bruce is mainly a back catalog kind of guy I agree with you only in so far as his earlier albums are concerned. With few exceptions most bands and artists don't get huge right out of the starting gate so often it takes a big successful record for an artist to get well known and that sometimes doesn't happen until way later. WHen it happens though usually the fans(at least the real fans)will eventually want to get all the albums. I still don't see how an album can only sell 20,000 copies but make it to number 59 or 60(which both the first two did). However, I won't argue about it because I don't have much in the way of insider information. Still that seems really low to me. I also don't think it sold only 20,000 then all of a sudden after Born in the USA 1.8 million people bought it. That's totally absurd. It must have been a steady increase in sales after BTR and especially after BITUSA. But to go from 20,000 to 2 milllion in the span of a few years after 1985 not buying it. In fact I'm looking at those two first albums in RIAA right now and it says they both went gold in the late seventies and platinum in the early 90's. I guess we will have to split the difference here. ;)

    M.... V....

D'Ascoyne 😁 that made me laugh.... The thought of Bruce being interviewed on the O Reilly Factor.

  96. G.... P....

    Capolavoro!

  97. W.... W....

Talented musician, just wish he'd keep his politics to himself.  Shut up and play music.  No one wants to hear political rhetoric from either side - entertain us.

    W.... W....

When were his First Amendment rights taken away? I missed it. I'm pretty sure that you don't have to listen, either to his political views or his music, which are often one and the same. Take care not to listen to, "Long Walk Home," from this same album unless you want to hear a very angry Bruce Springsteen taking issue with the Bush (W.) administrations use of torture, rendition, secret prisons, and all the rest, and changing, for the worse, "who we are, what we'll do, and what we won't."

    W.... W....

Mike Volpe - "politics, your personal health, your family and your sex life is nobody's business"

Comparing politics to these other things is nonsense. It always puzzles me when people talk about politics as if they're some private matter (of course, usually when someone does this, it's a substitute for saying, "I don't like your politics, so shut up.") By definition, they're a public thing; we're *supposed* to talk to each other about politics.

Furthermore, everything in an artist's life and mind are fodder for what they do. One's politics are about one's fundamental values, or should be, and at some point they're inseparable from one's art, especially when you're an artist like Springsteen, who often sings about economic hardship and about the vulnerable and cast-aside in our society. Why should the man who wrote "Born in the U.S.A." not talk about the politics behind his songs? If an interviewer asks him about that lyric, it would be ridiculous if he said, "Whoa, I'm just a musician, I don't get into politics."

    W.... W....

    Love his politics!! ☮️

    W.... W....

    Majik0715 LOVE that response! ☮️

    W.... W....

    John Hocking ☮️👍

  98. p.... ....

It's 2015 and I just heard this song for the first time on the radio.  Where has this song been hiding?  This is CLASSIC.

    p.... ....

@paulieinct Exactly! I was thinking the same thing.

    p.... ....

Fell in love with this song right away when I got this album when it came out. It totally captures that old 70s Bruce sound. Reminds me a lot of Thunder Road.

  99. b.... h....

In this song he sounds more like Bram Tchychoski than Bruce Springstien  ( I dare anyone to disagree)

    b.... h....

    @bramwell hepburn I disagree.
