Springsteen, Bruce - For You Lyrics

Princess cards she sends me with her regards
Barroom eyes shine vacancy, to see her you gotta look hard
Wounded deep in battle, I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted
To her Cheshire smile, I'll stand on file, she's all I ever wanted
But you let your blue walls get in the way of these facts
Honey, get your carpetbaggers off my back
You wouldn't even give me time to cover my tracks
You said, "Here's your mirror and your ball and jacks"
But they're not what I came for, and I'm sure you see that too

[CHORUS]
I came for you, for you, I came for you
But you did not need my urgency
I came for you, for you, I came for you
But your life was one long emergency
And your cloud line urges me
And my electric surges free

Crawl into my ambulance, your pulse is getting weak
Reveal yourself all now to me, girl, while you've got the strength to speak
'Cause they're waiting for you at Bellevue with their oxygen masks
But I could give it all to you now, if only you could ask
And don't call for your surgeon, even he says it's too late
It's not your lungs this time, it's your heart that holds your fate
Don't give me my money, honey, I don't want it back
You and your pony face and your Union Jack
Well, take your local joker and teach him how to act
I swear I was never that way, even when I really cracked
Didn't you think I knew that you were born with the power of a locomotive
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound?
And your Chelsea suicide with no apparent motive
You could laugh and cry in a single sound

And your strength is devastating in the face of all these odds
Remember how I kept you waiting when it was my turn to be the god?

You were not quite half so proud when I found you broken on the beach
Remember how I poured salt on your tongue and hung just out of reach
And the band, they played the homecoming theme as I caressed your cheek
That ragged, jagged melody, she still clings to me like a leech
But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way
Like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way
We were both hitchhikers but you had your ear tuned to the roar
Of some metal-tempered engine on an alien, distant shore
So you left to find a better reason than the one we were living for
And it's not that nursery mouth that I came back for
It's not the way you're stretched out on the floor
'Cause I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors
And who am I to ask you to lick my sores?
And you should know that's true

[REPEAT CHORUS]

  17. M.... M....

Truly grear lyrics; i must have missed this version while pulling out a collection of LPs from the record bin in college when i soaked in GREG KHINS version instead, i think now i would have lined up all three with Manfred Mann over air to settle this whole thing

  18. K.... P....

Manfred Man butchered this great song...

    K.... P....

I agree, made pure bubble gum from it.

    Sorry, MM did this better.

  26. M.... V....

First let me apologize in advance for the length of the post, I hope you think it was worth the time.Back in the late 70's I 'metriculated' (as they said there) at the USNA. I was a Brooklyn tough guy among all these Navy engineering guys from the south and midwest. Of course I was Bruce fan and my buddies gave me crap all day long. On the final day of my last year I was going around the dorms saying goodbye and I walked into my best buddy and biggest Bruce hater, Davey's room. He had this song BLASTING on his stereo and when he saw me standing there laughing he turned BEET RED. He looked at me and said " I've broken all your windows and I've rammed through all your doors " It was one of the greatest moments of my life!...lol

  27. s.... ....

Wounded deep in battle, I stand stuffed like some soldier undaunted...

  28. E.... L....

It's not that nursery mouth I came back for , It's not the way your stretched on the floor
Cause I've broken all your windows and ran through all your doors!!!
Probably the best ever written... E.

  29. P.... Z....

I saw Springsteen and the Band in 1972 in a club in Seaside Heights called Fat City and the Newspaper clipping on the front door said Bruce was a combination of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison so I decided to go that night ,great show great band ,the next day bought the album been a fan ever since. Thanks Bruce....

    P.... Z....

    Thanks Phil

  30. s.... ....

.....take your local joker and teach him how to act...

  31. J.... K....

Tragic that he sold out. Tragic.

    J.... K....

    Broke my heart.

  32. T.... D....

The memories associated with this song remind me of suicide but it is so beautiful and redeeming

  33. M.... P....

Bruce could fit more lyrics into a single song than most artists fit on an entire album.
Early Bruce; the words are just exploding from him. Great stuff.

    M.... P....

    Exploding with PASSION

    M.... P....

The back cover of the vinyl album has the words to the songs...it's a big, block-o-words...
    He was just so prolific.

  34. S.... H....

There are very few love songs filled with so much detail of the history of a love affair and so wonderfully and passionately described. It would be nearly impossible to imagine that this song wasn't written for one very real and specific person in the singer's life. Great tenderness, knowledge, feeling. Bruce lights the world.

    S.... H....

She ran away with the circus.......when the lights dimmed.

  35. S.... L....

One of the greatest albums of all time! !!!!😆😆😆

  36. d.... ....

    Pure True Classic Bruce...

  37. C.... S....

    3:34-4:00 is life

  38. C.... S....

This song reminds me of when I was young and endlessly hot and sexy.❤️

I saw Bruce perform this on a piano alone and unplugged at Princeton University a million years ago...and it's been resting at the edge of my subconscious ever since...very romantic.

My brother was at that show. I remember watching him leave with his friends. He couldn't stop talking about it the next day

  45. J.... G....

A beautiful song. The fidelity of this youtube version sucks. Please if never heard this song in all its glory. Seek it out

  48. K.... P....

    Love this song

  49. D.... D....

Wow what a big difference compared to Manfred Mann didn't know Bruce wrote it both versions are great, amazing how different though

  50. R.... O....

Like with Dylan, many others have done a good job covering songs by Bruce and done a damn good job too. Manfred Mann did this song solid.

  51. 4.... ....

Top 5 albums all time. True work of art.

  52. D.... D....

Amo esta canción, me costó un poco memorizarla pero valió la pena, es pura poesía beat😍

    D.... D....

Yes, poetry is the word. The entire album is true art. It was by far his best.

  53. A.... ....

I was once told by a man who is now a tenured professor at Tulane this song described me during that era. So true.

  54. .... ....

    amazing

  55. D.... N....

    YEAH this song is ok.

  56. S.... H....

Spirits In The Night, Blinded By The Light, For You: All coverversions by Manfred Mann´s Earthband are from this album. 1975, 1976 & 1979.

    S.... H....

    Nice job Matlock

  57. D.... K....

    Bruce juice!!!

  58. B.... 9....

Wow untill today I didn't know that some of the songs from Manfred Mann are covers from Bruce Sprengsteen.

    B.... 9....

They recorded three covers from Springsteen's debut album

    B.... 9....

Mannfred Manns Earth Band covered Springsteen. Mannfred Manns earlier band, Mannfred Mann, did not (AFAIK). Confused yet?

  59. M.... S....

I still like this song a lot, even knowing it's a Byrds/ Dylan ripoff (My Back Pages) and even if he could have used an editor on some of the wordierr lines at the end...

  60. e.... ....

i made it. i was looking for who create originally this song all afternoon long '(-_-)

  61. L.... T....

In my old age I've come down with CRS ( can't remember shit ) but I know every fucking word to this outstanding song

    L.... T....

Me too. Not the old age and ailments, just knowing the words off pat!

  62. A.... H....

By far, my favorite song of his! What a writer, these lyrics are brilliant.

  63. K.... D....

Why I think he's one of the best writers!

    K.... D....

Dylan was the best writer but only in music not including literature heroes we won't overlook. trading all heroes for ghosts. that's another band to consider.

  64. G.... B....

    All hail the Big Man!!!🎷

    G.... B....

    For you

  65. G.... B....

We saw Bruce and the E Street band perform this album and some of the wild innocent and the e street shuffle! It was wonderful!

  66. B.... C....

Manfred Mann's Earth Band sing better.

    B.... C....

way better original from the Boss

    B.... C....

    WHAT are you smoking???

    B.... C....

    You got that right!

    B.... C....

Bruce did it better, hey, he's Bruce!

  67. j.... r....

ANTHEMS IN THE DAY AND TODAY...ONE OF THOSE .CANNOT DESCRIBE TO "THE KIDS " ..WE USE TO SING THIS ENTIRE ALBUM AT THE FIRE ...ETC. WORD FOR WORD ..

  69. r.... ....

manfred mann does this song so much better

    r.... ....

everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that is mine

    r.... ....

It seems we have some similar taste in music, so I can't blame your profanity on you being a young ? that knows it all so I can only assume that you are just an azzhole, thank you

    r.... ....

@ryansdad1000 If it is just your opinion write "imo" or something ,cause by saying it as a fact, you are the one thinking you know everything. If you look at the music in general as something two dimensional, of course a well established band would make a better song than a kid on his first album, but understanding the depth of emotions and power of singing your own song is probably something way out of your grasp...

    r.... ....

    Manfred man butchered this song

  70. D.... M....

    Just may be his beat.

    D.... M....

    Agreed, wholeheartedly.

  71. J.... P....

One lyric left out of Manfred Mann's remake: "And who am I to ask you to lick my sores". 3:55

    J.... P....

John Peterson A lot of Catholicism slips into Bruce's works. Sort of surprising.

    J.... P....

@33Luger I don't know alot about religion . Kinda curious what links that line to catholicism?

  72. g.... ....

great song from a great album that never gets old.

    g.... ....

first two albums were labelled flops but they were the best. don't always believe hearsay.

  73. d.... ....

This is a song you either totally get and love ...or just don't get...THANK GOD I GET IT & LOVE IT!!!

    d.... ....

You are so brilliant and a conduit for deep lyrical meaning. Congratulations! Only 7 people get this one.

    d.... ....

i totally get it and love it too!!

  74. J.... M....

" Bar room eyes shine vacancy..." Nice!!!!!!!

    J.... M....

    Yes classic

  75. G.... ....

I think this would be a really hard song to sing - at least Bruce makes it seem so.

  76. m.... ....

I heard this track first in 1980, I was 15 at the time. I still know the lyrics by heart. I understand why some said that Springsteen would become the next Bob Dylan.
The entire album is just awesome. Pure poetry, great rock.

    m.... ....

LOL his body of work far surpasses Dylan

  77. r.... r....

this will go down as some of the finest music of the last quarter of the 20th century

    r.... r....

Manfred Mann made this one Trillion times better.

    r.... r....

2 Different styles !! Both Renditions are Great !!!

  79. M.... L....

One of his best...almost makes me want to compare him to Bob Dylan...

  80. n.... d....

Gotta love it when you sing this song around your girl-friend and she say's 'That's what she said' lol or When she sings it back to you (at least the chorus) hahah :) -Fun Fact: she said that and sang that before I ever played the song for her... Now it's just hilarious and ... fun when ever we sing it (at least the chorus lol).. After hearing the song, she sang it (at least the chorus) a little more Hahahah

    n.... d....

    Cheap-Thrills

    n.... d....

+nick doe -you diss The Boss-Go Away-

    n.... d....

@Linda Reilly What? Okay? I was talking about the thrill of my girlfriend singing this song back to me.. That's a 'cheap-thrill' in life. I never diss'ed The Boss, like you said I did. I Love this song, If I didn't then chances are I wouldn't be singing this song around the house or to the woman I love... Now would I? She heard me singing it so much that eventually, she sang it back to me... Sorry that seems like a 'cheap thrill' in life.., When I see him in march, I hope he plays this song. sorry to offend ya Linda or any other Bruce fan.. He's like my God or Yoda of music and  I've listened to a lot of music in my time. I have his vinyls and cd's and I've read the Big Man's book, I was reading it when he died and I saw the 'E-Street' before the Big Man passed during the Working On A Dream tour. I drew a silhouette of the boss that was from the magic album and I got it framed because it made the art-show that year, and I'm one to draw (at least well) so ya, I a Big fan so please calm-down, I'm the last one to 'diss' the Boss. my comment 'Cheap-thrills' was myself, making fun of my original comment but ya, take care -Peace-

  81. J.... I....

    This is a long song.

    J.... I....

@Joshua Issac When the album first hit radio, the stations wouldn't play this...too long. Had to be around the 3:00 minute limit. Late night DJ and progressives gave it air time on request.
