Springfield, Dusty - I've Been Wrong Before Lyrics

The night we met
The night that I won't forget
You seemed what I'd been waiting for
But baby, I've been wrong before

You held me tight
And everything seemed just right
I couldn't ask for me
But baby, I've been wrong before

He used to smile at me
And a-hold my hand like you do
Then he left me
And a-broke my heart in two

I see your face
And feel your warm embrace
You're all that I adore
But baby, I've been wrong before

Oh baby, I've been wrong before

Springfield, Dusty I've Been Wrong Before Comments
  1. p.... ....

Superb song, vocal and arrangement. The pain and uncertainty of love wonderfully captured by Randy Newman and interpreted by Dusty.

  2. A.... B....

I love Dusty, but Cilla Black's version is better.

  3. s.... ....

well miss dusty you may have wrong before, but your singing, phrasing is so right on this one. thank you

  4. M.... H....

She was a rather tortured soul and this song highlights that.... she was bisexual way before it became trendy.... she had a lot of guts... and an incredible voice.

  5. S.... G....

Love this, let's face it, love Dusty full stop. But why, oh why, do I think Cilla's version slightly edges it?

    S.... G....

Cilla's voice is *horrible* in the upper ranges, so there's more of a feeling of danger when she goes there. IMO I also prefer her version...you know Dusty won't have a problem with any of the notes

  6. L.... R....

Very emotional and effective vocal by Miz Springfield. Not sure about some of that background music. Probably would have been a stronger recording with only the piano backing her for this track. Orchestration too busy at times. A great song.

    L.... R....

Absolutely Agree. The Voice. The haunting piano. Needs nothing else.

  7. N.... ....

Wonderful . she is such an accomplished singer. Put all her contemporaries in the shade

  8. Y.... ....

Great upload. Much thanks!! So beautiful.

  9. B.... f....

Better voice than Cilla Black, but less feeling of vulnerability. Great song by both performers though.

  10. O.... M....

Brilliant, Dusty's  voice and that eerie piano!

  11. A.... E....

    Beautiful rendition Dusty, Just Beautiful.

  12. a.... ....

Dusty sings the definitive version of this song. She is sheer perfection, Thank you for posting.

+ay986 Totally agree with you : Dusty was the by far the best

I adore Dusty, an amazing voice . . . but I still like Cilla's version more. Much chillier down the spine. If that's good?

    A.... M....

They do have different strengths on this tune. Cilla is more theatrical, and is better able to telegraph the meaning of certain lines. She takes more risks in this regard, and some of them pay off (while a couple don't). But Dusty is more rhythmically natural--she's not phased by some of the trickier, 'note-ty' phrases (like the line "you see what I've been waiting for") that Cilla can sound a little stiff on. I think in the end I prefer Cilla too, by a hair, but Dusty's version is very good, one of the stronger tunes she sang in the mid-60s. Both deserve to be heard. As does Elvis Costello's 1991 version, which shows the song works well with a male voice too.

    A.... M....

Cilla has issues with the mystery of the song and shows little subtlety or any of the fragile hope written into the lyrics. Dusty nails it however because she is a better singer and has a more delicate touch which the song deserves

    A.... M....

It feels like Cilla is gonna fall off the tracks at any moment, because let's face it, her voice sucks when she sings high and has to belt. There's an element of 'what;s gonna happen'

    A.... M....

Anyway, Dusty has ...almost every track she sang, where she did the definitive version. Let's give this one to the mean 'ol curious orange

  14. S.... ....

I think the strings & piano here have the edge over even the divine George M...
