Spektor, Regina - The One Who Stayed And The One Who Left Lyrics

He went to visit an old, old friend
And it was long, long overdue
And though they stayed up very late
They never talked out of turn or tune
And every time they'd say goodbye
Well he'd just stay another while
They started from a distant place
And were so happy face to face

The one who left wanted everything
The one who stayed never wanted more
It's not your choice, it's how you're built
It's in a blueprint of your soul
The one who left, he dropped his smile
And they sat quiet for a while
Then The one who stayed began to speak
And in his words, he answered why

I'm just another drop in the bucket
I'm just another song on a jukebox
I'm just another face in the crowd
Another fish in the sea

Something to being one of the many
Something to being one in the masses
Something to being surrounded by others and not alone by yourself

I never wanted the bright lights and my eyes are much too quiet
I never wanted them pointing their fingers at me
Oh no, but...

Something to being one of the many
Something to being one in the masses
Something to being surrounded by others and not alone by yourself

The one who left he knew it then
And he would never doubt again
He loved this life, he loved his friend
But he'd keep running 'til the end
All words they said hovered above
All of the pain, all of the love
They hugged goodbye
And in his room, he sang real quiet to the moon

Something to being one of the many who get to sing the songs on the jukebox
Who get to stay awake all night and dream half of the day
Something to waking up in a new town
Something to singing songs to a new crowd
Something to being surrounded by others and not alone by yourself

I never wanted the bright lights and my eyes are much too quiet
I never wanted them pointing their fingers at me
Oh no, but...

Something to being one of the many who get to sing the songs on the jukebox
Who get to stay awake all night and dream half of the day
Then wake up in a new town
Just another face in the crowd

This song is my favorite from this album 😔🧡🧡🧡

I feel like she’s talking about herself in the Chorus in how she doesn’t want to be treated as someone special, but just be viewed as another face in the crowd.

    it’s a very humble song 🧡

  2. R.... F....

in the end, both just don't want to be alone...

  3. R.... C....

Love all of her songs 😔💙

Okay this song is amazing and all of her songs are but does anyone else think this is a gay love story

    g.... ....

An interesting interpretation.... I think it might be about coping with fame, but that's just my interpretation.

    g.... ....

awwww and they get back together after the fame wears off :')

  6. K.... S....

Regina inspires me and gives me hope.

  7. j.... ....

why doesn't she play this one live?

    j.... ....

    She did in Tucson

    j.... ....

She just did in Kansas City <3

  8. T.... ....

Does anyone else see a parallel between this song and Two Birds? I think this song (which I absolutely love, by the way) could possibly be about a reunion of the two birds who said goodbye to each other

    T.... ....

This song focuses more on the bird who stayed, humanizes him a little, and makes the bird who left seem less like the good guy. This song goes more in depth about the characters of the birds and brings new aspects to the table, completing tha two birds saga in an absolutely perfectly beautiful song

  9. t.... ....

One of my favorites from the album. A universal theme.

  10. A.... ....

why is this not in my cd?

    A.... ....

There are two versions of 'Remember Us To Life': one with the eleven original tracks and another version with three bonus tracks ('New Year', 'The One Who
Stayed And The One Who Left' and 'End Od Thought').

    A.... ....

Yes, thank you!! i can't believe I am walking around the world without knowing those songs

    A.... ....

    same :(

  11. G.... T....

This seems to have connections with Small Town Moon and Two Birds which is really neat

    G.... T....

Greer The Compass Girl could you explain please? (Sorry)

  12. Q.... e....

This is by far my favorite album of hers! This song made sure of it.

  13. j.... a....

i don't know why, but i'm about to cry cuz of this song

    j.... a....

    jeremias asensio Me, too!

  14. K.... N....

Kalle the Finn Exceptional as New Year or truth but Us or How or Small bills are maybe even better. I' in love with you...

  15. M.... E....

Her songs are so beautiful, she seems to understand music at a level I could never even hope to achieve. God forbid this is her last album, but if it is, it's truly amazing and she should be really proud of her work. Thank you, Regina.

  16. B.... H....

    Beautiful!

  17. c.... f....

    I love this song

  18. e.... ....

  19. J.... R....

    J.... R....

    I like turtles.

  20. A.... C....

She considers herself just one out of many - but she can express emotions we all share in such a unique way that makes her special for us.

May I recommend her for Human of the Year 2016?...

    A.... C....

I hope she gets the Nobel Prize for Literature 30 years from now.

    A.... C....

Or way sooner!! She certainly already deserves it.
