Soul Coughing - $300 Lyrics

Lifting me up like a garage door
I need to feel it when the drug starts coming on
I know you, Lord, are a jealous lord
I know the tablet is your competition

And I need for you to be reasonable
I need for you to be reasonable
(How much? She said 'for three hundred dollars, I'll do it'...)

Beating me down just like a rain storm
I need to feel it when the rain starts coming on
I know the skin is a jealous skin
I know the sky, it is its competition

And I need for you to be reasonable
I need for you to be reasonable
(How much? She said 'for three hundred dollars, I'll do it'...)

  10. M.... B....

This song confuses me.. I like it but I don't too..? 🤔

    M.... B....

Same, it’s like I kinda like it but then I don’t think I do. It’s conflicting

  11. M.... E....

Kick ass bands I saw live in the early 90's brought me here ... That's not a TV show

  12. o.... ....

    Majora brought me here.

  13. s.... s....

Run through the desert at mach speed anyone?

  14. F.... J....

Soul Coughing perfectly captured how it feels to be high on opioids in the sound of their music. Especially with El Oso. BTW, X-FILES MOTHERFUCKERS!

  15. D.... M....

Forget house, cartoon Network introduced me to this band. Looked up their songs ever since

  16. D.... M....

    Please explain why they disbanded?

    D.... M....

They pretty much wanted to pursue their own music careers.

  17. R.... M....

    omg I've always thought it's "I want t-shirt for 300 $"

  18. J.... B....

    25 people don't have $300

  19. L.... N....

We met up with Soul Coughing in the early 2000's to talk about using MP3's to promote their band (on a website!) the animation that aired on Cartoon Network, and working with Mike Doughty on lyrics. Check it: https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=Tmls96tpwdM

  20. r.... ....

this song kicks ass....its one of their best songs along with: Soundtrack to mary, the idiot kings, super bon bon, true dreams wichita, janine, and blue eyed devil

    r.... ....

    And St Louise

  21. S.... C....

cries...I thought that background voice said "a wap do wap de le dala do it" //cause 3ds youtube has poor audio quality and now I know wat it says. still is a rocking song.

    S.... C....

Actually, he is saying "How much? She said for $300; I'll do it."

  22. s.... ....

Always reminded me of some lost Radiohead b-side.

    s.... ....

Go to Sleep off Hail to the thief?

    s.... ....

    RADIO HEAD GAVE =HEAD

    s.... ....

    Interesting perspective.

    s.... ....

  23. g.... ....

    R.I.P. House's beard

    g.... ....

+itstoomainstreamtoo lol It's funny because he is shaving when they play this song.

    g.... ....

It only gets funnier when you explain it!!

    g.... ....

    Rip methadone^^

  24. a.... c....

Before Doughty turned into a monster D-Bag

  25. M.... ....

I liked the song more when i didn't know the lyrics. The "how much, she said for 300 dollars id do it" sounded much better when i didn't know what it said and it just sounded like caveman gibberish.

    M.... ....

    omg I've always thought it's "I want t-shirt for 300 $"

    M.... ....

    omg I've always thought it's "I want t-shirt for 300 $"

    M.... ....

    omg I've always thought it's "I want t-shirt for 300 $"

    M.... ....

    sold! @Roosaliisa Manninen

    M.... ....

This song is about the experiences Mike Doughty had in the band where he was on drugs.

  26. 2.... ....

    House brought me here :D

  27. W.... ....

    best album
it was nice of m doughty to start playing lyrics like this on his solo stuff, but it really pales in comparison to the band.

  28. N.... ....

    Reminds me of Fatboy Slim.

  29. R.... ....

Chris Rock brought me here. Just passing through.

    R.... ....

Chris Rock the comedian ?.....is he sampled in this song ?....from what movie ?

    R.... ....

Chris Rock rehearsed his "favorite joke" on an old comedy album, but reversed the audio. The audio was played forwards and sampled in this song. I think Chris Rock mentioned this song in an interview or something, too.

("So I'm walking down the street, right? And I saw this prostitute, right? And I said, 'How much?' She said, 'For $300, I'll do anything you want.' I said, 'Bitch, paint my house!'")

    R.... ....

@REFL0X thanks....I listened to the 'favorite joke' on youtube...but did not hear the $300 line used in this SC tune

  30. l.... ....

    Featuring Chris Rock.

    l.... ....

Chris Rock sampled on this ?.....from what movie ?

    l.... ....

From a backmasked bit on the album ROLL WITH THE NEW.

    l.... ....

Chris Rock did a lot of standup and other work that was recorded before he had movie roles.

  31. m.... ....

then you sir have awful taste in music, go back to your lil wayne vids and leave these nice folk alone

  32. K.... ....

Soul Coughing sucks about as much as Primus. ^^

  33. C.... T....

You fill me up like a gargle door.

  34. v.... ....

thank you and I am sorry to everyone I know and do not know.
    -Ivy Savage

  35. I.... K....

CD? I own this cassette :D

  36. A.... ....

    house <3

  37. g.... ....

I need for you to be reasonable..

  38. M.... K....

I'm pretty sure the only sample here is that slowed down spoken word loop ("how much? she said..." etc), which comes from a Chris Rock album.

  39. q.... ....

    It's never Lupus

  40. Q.... ....

The song begins with 100% musical chords.

  41. Q.... ....

Is the guitar at the beggining a sample?
    Where is it sampled from?

  42. A.... L....

If you think this is all samples, you have no idea what you are talking about. There is one member of the band, Mark De Gli Antoni, who plays a keyboard sampler. The drums, bass, guitar and vocals are all very much real.

  43. J.... O....

But that's kind of like saying "Oh, I've tasted water, and that tastes similar to Coke"

  44. p.... ....

you haven't been enlightened (this song is NOT entirely sampled), you've been misinformed. please go to the Soul Coughing website, wikipedia page, or other reputable website and please don't listen to these lies.

  45. p.... ....

the band Soul Coughing consists of a singer/frontman, a drummer, an upright bassist, and a sampler.
consists entirely of samples? you could say that's an overstatement. you could say it's ignorance, misinformation. you could say it's trolling. or you could say it's a LIE.

    which one are you?

  46. q.... ....

the scene is when he's on Methadone to replace his Vicodin tablets, it was just the perfect scene! worth of the wide screen

  47. j.... b....

LOVE this band! I think they're so creative and the music goes right through me. I I haven't heard another band that sounds anything like them.

  48. T.... P....

I meant that I've never heard any song that sounds like this one does. It begins with something I wouldn't even call music and the rest is almost like music to my ears.
PS! I didn't know this song was composed of samples, thanks for enlightening me.

  49. O.... v....

Yes this song is so original that everything in it is sampled except the vocals. I am not saying this is bad song. I enjoy it. But isn't a bit ridiculous to say that one has "never heard any similar songs" about a song that is composed entirely of samples?

  50. s.... ....

Sounds similar to: Roni Size - "Visiting Angels"

  51. s.... ....

Sounds similar to: Roni Size - "Visiting Angels"

  52. Q.... ....

    SAMPLED!

  53. F.... Q....

I think that the "How much... she said... 300 dollars" is a sample taken from Chris Rock someplace.

  54. R.... B....

Most Solid Bass-lick ever. I think i busted in a pants a lil bit.

  55. m.... ....

    this song smells of death

  56. A.... B....

The "How much? She said "For $300 dollars, ill do it." is a clip from a Chris Rock comedy special about how he said if hes gonna pay a hooker 300 dollars to have sex she better paint his house too. I guess Mike thought it was funny enought to write a song about.

  57. A.... B....

That is VERY close but Tom Waits version is more of a scale from down to up while this is more of a loop of what sounds kinda like a low tuned mandalin.

  58. M.... S....

who else shaves listening to this song now?

  59. E.... ....

    instant classic

  60. E.... B....

What do think about the intro to Tom Waits's "Goin Out West" like reversed though?

  61. F.... ....

Yes .. victory dance (performed by my morning jacket ) - also featured in house md

  62. r.... ....

House MD, s05e16, The Softer Side. :L

  63. A.... B....

Thank you, Chris Rock for making this song.

  64. A.... B....

@stanokus12 I hear it too but this has a raggaeton tone to it unlike Iggy's which has a lot of guitar scratching and distortion.

  65. s.... ....

this song reminds me of "I wanna be your dog" by the Stooges.. Not sure if you can call these two similar though..

  66. D.... H....

    this song is true art

  67. J.... ....

    @SubieRex44 so true man

  68. d.... ....

FWI--the voice-over "how much would you get for 300 dollars a week" is Chris Rock...deepened down in pitch. cool.

  69. V.... ....

@SilverthornRage thank you for your opinion. I will keep mine :D
I really like all their almubs (maybe not all songs) but OK Computer is publicly most favourite, so i had greatest chance of succes by suggesting OK Computer album ;)

  70. H.... E....

why didn't I discover this song earlier

    oh, yeah - I don't watch House

  71. U.... ....

This song has always put me in an intense trance.

  72. H.... ....

"So I'm walking down the street, right? And I saw this prostitute, right? And I said, 'How much?' She said, 'For $300, I'll do anything you want.' I said, 'Bitch, paint my house!'"

  73. H.... ....

    How much?

    She said:

    For $300 I'll do...

  74. R.... L....

Wiki says - The chorus of the song "$300" is a sample of a Chris Rock joke; singer Mike Doughty heard the joke which is backmasked on Rock's Roll With the New. Curious, Doughty recorded it into his ASR-10 sampler with the intention of simply reversing it and seeing what the joke was, and wrote the song around what he found there. The song was used in the House episode "The Softer Side" in 2009.

  75. D.... M....

    House MD :)

  76. V.... ....

@rayzrblayd24 I know you asked this more than 1 year ago, but still i would like to answer
As of singing style i would reffer Beck to you (his older songs in albums like Odelay) he also experiments with instruments like in here
Then another great band which does experiments with sounds is Radiohead and as of quality of music i would tell you to go and check them out... their album OK Computer is rated as best, but i like all of them (literally) :)

    ViRPo

  77. j.... ....

    @kimonocat001

Heard it on House as well. Nice scene too, where he starts to shave if i remember correctly.

    Great song, great series.

  83. p.... ....

  84. k.... ....

First heard Soul Coughing on Cartoon Network as a kid. Forgot about it but then House reminded me lol. Wish they made another CD.

  85. K.... ....

@McSchlagbohrer Agreed! I stopped by my mother's house one night and couldn't figure out why she was listening to Massive Attack in the den...

  86. z.... ....

whats the name of a singer?

  87. d.... ....

And it gets better. Soul Coughing is awesome.

  88. T.... P....

I haven't actually heard a similar song by them nor have I heard any similar songs by someone else. So I guess not. Not sure. This might be a one-of-a-kind song :)

  89. T.... P....
