Sonic Youth - The Sprawl Lyrics

[Kim]
To the extent that I wear skirts
And cheap nylon slips
I've gone native
I wanted to know the exact dimension of hell
Does this sound simple?
Fuck you! Are you for sale?
Does 'Fuck you' sound simple enough?
This was the only part that turned me on
But he was candy all over

Come on down to the store
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more

I grew up in a shotgun row
Sliding down the hill
Out front were the big machines
Steel and rusty now I guess
Outback was the river
And that big sign down the road
That's where it all started

Come on down to the store
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
Come on down to the store
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
Come on down to the store
You can buy some more, and more, and more, and more
You can buy some more, more, more, more

    Kim Gordon ❤️❤️❤️

Typical Sonic Youth. Seemingly simple song, but sounds just right. Musicians' ears

    b.... ....

Simple beautiful hardcore. This album has the most hardcore sensibilities over any of the others. Sister yes but Steve really let the punk rock out in Daydream. Long live Thurston and Lee for the revolutionary guitar works but we all can not deny Steve is the straw that stirs the drink in the band.

I'm currently writing a thesis for a physics degree. There's a section about finding the area/volume/hypervolume etc. of a type of distribution. In the intro to this section, I'm quoting Kim:

"I wanted to know the exact dimensions of hell/
    Does this sound simple?"

Obviously can't include the "fuck you" lol

  11. Y.... ....

I'm really trying to get into Sonic Youth so what kind of music genre should I expect? some people are saying they were a punk band and that's what is confusing me I'm not getting any punk vibes

    Y.... ....

noise rock, expect dissonance and noiseeee.

    Y.... ....

This definitely has all the punk vibes

  12. S.... m....

Love sonic youth...can't rationalize buying a Honda tho

  13. A.... P....

    A Revolutionary band!

  14. T.... G....

  29. R.... H....

aaah, good ole sonic youth never get old

  30. 6.... ....

I want a jazz/bossa nova band recreate the ending of this song with just drums, horns, guitar, and flutes. Something like Nelson Angelo and Joyce Moreno

    6.... ....

  31. D.... G....

  36. H.... M....

This song is like dystopian fiction, somehow it conveys a whole narrative

    H.... M....

The enTire album is kind of a cyberpunk concept album.

    H.... M....

This song is based of a series of novels by William Gibson including Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Their song Pattern Recognition is also based off a William Gibson Novel.

  37. j.... m....

I love the fever dream that is the second half.

  38. g.... b....

    Does this sound simple?

  44. f.... d....

My favorite Sonic Youth song (along with "Tunic.") The riff is fucking infectious, I haven't been able to get it out of my head for months!

  45. g.... ....

    Brilliant ;-)

  46. D.... L....

I have seen Sonic Youth live once and it was very kool...They had that these massive light boards pointing at the audience, on the left and right sides of the stage, very bright warm lights,

  47. C.... D....

    i love you, Kim

  48. 6.... ....

Maybe I am crazy for saying this, the noise section at the ending is beyond beautiful it sounds so divine! It's strangely soulful at parts, but it's all kind of shrouded by this thick fog of noise and overheated amps of dissonant guitars bleeding into one another. Sometimes the ending for me conjures images of a dystopian city being washed up and enveloped in a sea of flames, waste, and toxic fuels, the guitars sound like the roaring engines of cars swerving off highways under the floodlight of fading stars, violently and randomly clashing into one another, and being torn to shreds - creating ultimately this disorentiating hypnotic loop of explosions the same image overlapping itself again and again at a dangerously slow rate of time. But you can still hear this heavenly melody gracefully dancing upon the clouds in the background yet keeping all the destruction intact without completely erasing its form. as the song keeps going, slowly the melody in the back grows closer and closer to the foreground of the painting (camera) while the surface of noise begins to pull back and recede into the curtains of a rainstorm

    6.... ....

That part makes me dream like crazy

    6.... ....

it's awesome, but i like more the part in the middle of total trash. btw, both are masterpieces

    6.... ....

I know what you mean but I just can't take the time to articulate lol

    6.... ....

    Sonic youth really

    paint a picture!

    K.... W....

Best lyric. A good snappy comeback if someone doubts your decision-making skills.

    K.... W....

    Good band name

I was blasting this song in my room the other night, and low and behold my sister came in, telling me to "turn off that noise, I'm trying to sleep!" What a glorious moment 'twas.

  52. I.... ....

"Are you for sale? Does fuck you sound simple enough?" Damn that's a great lyric.

    I.... ....

I also love that line, but really, it could've backfired - the guy only had to answer, "Yeah, that's what I meant!"

  53. M.... E....

Gets better every time I listen to it.

  54. Y.... A....

    how good can this get?

    Y.... A....

I bought this album out of a box on the floor at Tower Records in NYC when it was hot off the press. Nothing like it !
