Soft Cell - Her Imagination Lyrics
She slips in and out of her dull imagination
That floats around the twilight of her tomb
Clutching her little treasures
That represent a happy moment
Displayed with sad affection in her room
But this life is a prison
And it hurts to hear the children laughing
While they live their pretty little dreams
And frozen all the while
Is a tearful bitter smile
Nothings really what it seems
Nothings really what it seems
Nothings really what it seems
You were standing at the alter
In the tides by the candles
As they burn
Pressed against the mirror
Playing all your favourite film stars
Ready for the camera
That would never, never turn
Push aside the curtain
Of your tiny garret window
And glare out on the narrow little world
You were in your wedding dress
Great expectations more or less
Playing with your dolls like any ordinary
Little girl
Candle light
Candle bright
Won't you light my way tonight
Candle light
Candle bright
Won't you light my way tonight
Now it's the futile bitter feelings
That clutch you in the middle
You were never really given a chance
And the spite that jabs your mind
Hides a heart thats really warm and kind
And the pulse that races with
Each other inquisitive glance
You were always the outsider
And they set you up a childhood
To be just another cuddly toy
And the whisper in the street
When the street corner gossips meet
The woman on the fourth floor
He was such a happy boy
The woman on the fourth floor
He was such a happy boy
The woman on the fourth floor
He was such a happy boy
The woman on the fourth floor
He was such a happy boy
Candle light
Candle bright
Won't you light my way tonight
Candle light
Candle bright
Won't you light my way tonight
Candle light
Candle bright
Won't you light my way tonight

Soft Cell Her Imagination Comments
I love this song. I covered it: https://4trackphantoms.bandcamp.com/track/her-imagination-soft-cell-cover
Fab version
This was recorded as a radio session for David (Kid) Jenson and produced by John Sparrow! It appeared on Soul Inside but only on the 12", a twin 7" limited edition pack and US/Canadian Imports! It truly is a haunting but brilliant track.
"The woman on the fourth floor, he was such a happy boy........." grotesquely beautiful
a soft cell gem.
Would fit in nicely shuffled with Baby Doll, Heat, Numbers.
Wish I heard this before, you know ?.....
And on Basement Tapes too!
I never heard this song by them either. it almost has the same feel as Numbers. Was this left off that album?
@Michael Walz Written and released the same year as 'The Art of Falling Apart', and included some tracks that would appear the next year on 'This Last Night in Sodom'. I'm a huge fan, and I think this EP is probably their best recording. Details at http://www.discogs.com/Soft-Cell-Soul-Inside/master/425733 and if you search, there's another version with slightly different tracks (no Hendrix Medley)
taking good care of devotion
One of the darkest songs ever written. The gloom and despair of this track are sheer examples of its brilliance, Masterpiece of melancholy. GENIUS!!!!!!
oh yeah this is AWESOME
When I first heard this song years ago, I thought that Marc Almond had a very creative and desciptive way of writing lyrics for such a macabre composition. As I continued to actively listen to the song, I began to feel an ironic sense of self-pity for the character of the song, as well as, becoming spellbound by the dark lyrics throughout his composition. I've always thought that Marc has an uncanny ,but creative way in which he describes his characters through song. Thanks for posting.
the best soft cell song (and of course the darkest). no doubt. and that's Trip-Hop ten years before its time!
@MyNameisBeezy From the 'Soul Inside' EP. It might be on some compliations as well.
