Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - I Don't Blame You At All Lyrics

I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no
I'm only payin' the price for a trip I took to paradise
'Cause I looked into a pair of eyes
& what I thought was the look of love was only hurt in disguise
Too bad I didn't realize, oh but don't apologize, no, 'cause...
I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
I should've did it myself
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no
I think it's pretty plain: holdin' you would take a ball & chain
Every bet I made was all in vain
'Cause what I thought was an ocean of love was just a wee drop of rain
Too bad that it couldn't rain, oh but you don't have to explain, no, 'cause...
I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
I should've did it myself
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no
I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
That's the thing to do
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no
I said, what I thought was sure to last, to last was just a minute instead
Too bad that I got misled, ah but you don't have to hang your head, no,
'cause...
I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
I should've did it myself
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no
I don't blame you at all 'cause you played it cool
'Cause that's the thing to do
You don't owe me a thing 'cause I played the fool
No no no no no

The dude could write about all the many stories that branch from love situations. The arrangement here is killing and the Miracles are amazing as usuall on background. Did you know they always made up their background? Pete said it during an interview. They were an important ingredient to Smokeys success. Loved them all.

    This song is tight!!!!!!!!

All of the comments here crediting only SMOKEY. That's sad.
This is a MIRACLES song ....and they ALL deserve credit ...not just HIM.
SMOKEY, CLAUDETTE, BOBBY, RONNIE , PETE, and MARV.
    THE MIRACLES are a GROUP.
It's HIGH-TIME that they were given due credit AS a GROUP !!

    w.... ....

Look...You are a "Smokey fan" . and that's OK. I am a fan of ALL of The Miracles ....and that's OK too. Let's just agree to disagree...and leave it at that.

williamg2552 For the record, I AM a Miracle's fan! Like many I followed Smokey's career when he went solo but I love all of those 60's & early 70's hits as well. Unlike you, I don't think people disregard The Miracle's but the focus is on Smokey because he was the leader and lead vocalist of the group. It's the same as The Jackson 5/The Jackson's, the fans don't disregard the other brothers but the spotlight was/is/will always be on MJ. Why? He sang lead on ALL of their major hits, he was placed out front and he went on to blockbuster success as a solo artist. Same thing with Diana...SAME THING WITH SMOKEY!

*Mike X* Writing a song, lyric wise is about as prolific as writing a poem. It's the production values, and the technical values (vocal, rhythm, percussion, keyboard, and horn arrangements that make a professional song. Otherwise u are left with some bullshit that wouldn't qualify for a high school talent show. The Miracles performed many of these tasks themselves. Further, to perform the sang requires many hours of production, arranging, vocal modulation techniques and so on. This is why Smokey can't be considered as an individual with this group. I mean, the chord progressions are worth their weight in gold, and without great progressions, again you are left with a poem. Smokey was talented, but if we are to believe the album liner notes, so were the rest of the Miracles.

The record that's pictured in the video, with the name of the song on it, says "Smokey Robinson and the Miracles."

    w.... ....

interview on BET the other Miracles admitted Smokey didn't need them to write these songs.
name hit songs that they wrote on their own without Smokey. He made sure to include them so they would get royalties to have a steady income.

  21. M.... H....

    My favorite Motown group

    M.... H....

  22. G.... H....

What a beautiful voice and a great soul song!!

  23. W.... M....

I was 10 years old when this song was released. Great Motown hits like this with their incredible orchestrations inspired me to become a proficient violinist!!! What an honor to perform with the George Duke Orchestra for the Howard Theater Gala Reopening in Washington, DC several years ago. Smokey Robinson and Barry Gordy were present mutually admiring each other as friends and colleagues. How could I have known when my mother encouraged me to take lessons at 8.

  24. R.... W....

    Wonderful for Northern Soul dancing

  25. S.... B....

9th grade for me. I've always had a decent (untrained) falsetto. My older brothers always told me to STOP SINGING! So when would leave the house, I'd put on this song and sing it over and over. Today was the first time I've heard the song since 1971. 47 yrs ago. Wow.
