Smile Empty Soul - This Is War Lyrics

i'm just a normal man
i wouldn't hurt nothing at all
but here we are

our leaders have a plan
i'd only kill if it's for them
now here we are

i drove in a car and flew in a plane
to come to your house and kick your door in
now it's down to this, it's just you and me
i'll blow your fucking head off for my country

i go to church and tithe
i go to work in a suit and tie
but this is war
i'm really not sure why
but the tv says that you are wrong
now here we are

[chorus]

my feet hurt from the sand
but still i march on gun in hand
cause this is war
this isn't what i planned
i wanted to be so much more
but this is war

[chorus]

Smile Empty Soul This Is War Comments

My friend introduced this song to me in the university, 10 years ago. He died after few months we know each other. I still remember this song because of him. May you rest in peace.

  2. R.... B....

This was my platoons anthem in Iraq when I was 19 years old! Now at 35 this song and video just makes me depressed and is sad that most Wars in the long run don't really change anything looking back it was all a waste of blood and treasure!

  3. J.... H....

    War is never the answer

  4. B.... V....

    This world is fucked

  5. B.... V....

    Politicians are the worst religion

  6. E.... P....

If this video were produced and uploaded by a right wing conservative patriot in current year it would be banned for hate speech, promoting colonialism, or extremism. Just look at the perfectly normal conservatives trying to have conversations on YouTube and being banned. Imagine if James Allsup or Vincent James made this video.

  7. A.... M....

What's about real innocent people ??? Are Syrian children terrorists? Are they causing such harm to a giant country such as the United States of America or Russia or even the country borders ?????
What the hell is that I used to love this song and hopefully it was kinda fair for the reaaaaal innocent people all over the world

  8. J.... O....

Peace is the only way ✌️

  9. C.... R....

Reality n word are so differant ... I feel for anyone that has had to take a life it will change u trust

  10. J.... M....

    Good song anti war message?

  11. C.... C....

Strikes me as a despondent acknowledgement of the facts of the situation.
A lot of us, myself included, joined the military with the hopes of doing something great, we had such idealistic concepts as to why we were joining.
The reality is much less romanticized and once the pure zealous initial reason for wanting to sign up faded away, the purpose for our going into conflict became muddled by politicians and eventually we realized that our patriotic ideals were used for further line the pockets of various parties at the expense of our lives, and the lives of our 'enemies'.

Ideologically, i could care less what Islamic countries do. I don't care about communists. I don't care what any other industrialized nation/super power does. We do not belong in perpetual conflict.
However... the reality exists that there are resources we need that are controlled by sovereign nations that are strongly opposed to, or are actively abusing the alliance of, this country.
If we're in conflict because of resources and the need to secure those resources for the betterment of our country, let's just be honest about it. But to be frank, honesty about that wouldn't get votes and the eternal cycle of political power and prestige would be lost.

There's nothing pure about our politicians. Our government. Our country. It is all tainted in some way or another.
The only thing we can do is push forward in our own lives and not worry too much about the bigger picture, because the bigger picture is ugly.

Regardless, and as callous as it might seem, if my country called me back into service to slaughter an enemy of the nation, i would still march along, gun in hand, and kick those fucking doors in.

    C.... C....

    Beautifully said.

  12. N.... ....

One of the best songs from SES. It's fucking raw and real. War is for the elite and rich. They don't give a fuck about the men, women and children dying on either side. Wake up people.

  13. b.... ....

I served in Ramadi 2004. War is not beautiful or victimless. To say we did what we had to for our country is ignorant. This song is great. But I’ll always remember my brothers we lost. Semper Yut

  14. s.... P....

This song is underrated. Way too underrated.

  15. s.... ....

OIF Vet, Thanks for telling the story of so many us like how it really is. We were just normal people doing extraordinary things back there.

  16. D.... E....

It's fucking bullshit that this album isn't on spotify...i mean seriously, it's the only album I love by these SES

  17. m.... m....

South park episode brought me here

  18. S.... ....

I loved this song and listened to it a bunch of times before I enlisted when it first came out, however looking back now the lyrics mean different things. I guess true wisdom does indeed come with age.

  19. k.... k....

Wish this band was recognized more they kick ass

  20. D.... M....

Ironic to show victims of the Holocaust who died because liberal big guv didn't want to do anything about it

  21. I.... N....

My first deployment terrifies me tbh. I keep listening to this song and thinking of my brothers and sisters. I’ve made it a personal oath that I will make sure they come home to see there families. I wanna come home to see my family as well, but my brothers and sisters are family as well. One quote that’s stuck with me ever since I joined is “if not me then who”

  22. S.... A....

Vietnam war was uncle ho's mistake

  23. L.... M....

Paul Tibbets. The Enola Gay. That will end a war REAL fast.

  24. P.... 4....

i love this song and i hate that people never gave this band the credit they deserved

  25. S.... ....

Literally used to listen to this in Helmand 2011

  26. L.... S....

It is amazing to me to see how many people believe this to be a pro-war song. Here's an interpretation of the lyrics I found online: It is not literal.. He is being sarcastic and resentfull in the lyrics. When he sings about only killing for our leaders it's him being resentfull towards the fact that our nation makes people fight in wars. The military and the media and then goverment strike fear in Americans so they fight wars politicians start. When he sings about going to church and tithe he is being sarcastic to that fact that he is a drone like americans. How he goes to church and prays and pays dues. Also when he sings about going to work in a suite and tie meaning he is a drone with work as well as other americans. He also compares the facts of being a civilian drone and not killing compared to the same person in the military killing. It's all the same...

  27. T.... S....

My great great grandfather served in world war 1

My great grand father served in world war 2

    My grandfather served in Vietnam

    My dad served in Iraq

My brother is serving in Afghan

    Now I’m breaking apatt

  28. a.... ....

War may be ugly but all of us here wouldn't be in the comfort of our homes safe. Happy independence day everyone.

  29. Z.... D....

    Love these guys

  30. A.... F....

Saw these guys the other day.

  31. J.... O....

All of the misery, and all of the beauty of the world is reflected perfectly by the surface of the world that we create
There is no justice and love without the sacrifices of you brethren, my father was in the 101’st airborne devision in Vietnam. Grandad spent 6 years in WW2, my great uncle was a digger of the Anzac in the First World War. I am descended from 10 generations of soldiers. The only assuring fact about war is that the repercussions of it are the birth of a new war. The misery, bloodshed & disparities that are reaped by war create a new generation of people who are thirsty for blood.
That is the sad reality of life.
Many blessings to you all, namaste to all POW/MIA veterans. If the whole world is burning to the ground I will be there with you. Hooahh!

  32. G.... T....

Every time I’d think of my uncle in Iraq, this song pops up

  33. O.... 5....

War exists because of an idea.

  34. M.... S....

I wonder Sometimes If it was Worth Serving For A Country That Really Doesn't Give A FUCK! For those who Sacrificed!

  35. A.... S....

why these songs are so underrated

  36. W.... S....

Something most people will never realize is that sacrificing your body is one of the easiest parts about being a soldier. Sacrificing your heart, your mind, your soul and your family.......thats the part that really destroys soldiers.

  37. N.... T....

Patriotism leads to nationalism which leads to fascism which leads to the dark side. Search your feelings you know this to be true. On on a more serious note all forms of government (including all forms of republics) eventually lead tyranny.

The only escape from this cycle of suffering is to find a way to make anarchism work. I'm not saying it's easy or will happen anytime soon but it's the only righteous course.

"That government is best which governs not at all" Thoreau

  38. N.... M....

War is as old as human history, it is a gruesome inevitability.

  39. G.... A....

Why was this band never given the credit they deserved,so underated

    G.... A....

I always looked at these guys like a more refined Nirvana. That's probably why. U can't outshine Kurt Cobain

    G.... A....

    Honestly.

    G.... A....

Really? Seether got famous and they have pure crap so it has nothing to do with the songs because actually this band has pretty good songs!

    G.... A....

Because this song. They don't like anti war music.

  40. t.... ....

You're all a bunch of pituitary retards, and the members of Smile Empty Soul are ashamed to have you as fans. This song is a anti-war song about the futility of armed conflict when peace is the true state of mammalian existence. If any single one of you could believe that war is the way to peace then you are a part of the problem, and I have no regrets if you blow your fucking brains out right this second. Truly, humanity would be better off without your existence holding us down, and I hope you liberate this world of your existence as soon as humanly possible.

  43. V.... t....

    Such a great song.

  44. j.... ....

most of you dont understand that this is written from the prospective that war is a ugly fact of this world and real people are affected everyday. humans are inherently violent and will fight each other until we all return to dirt. peace is an illusion as long as there is difference in this world there will never be peace.

  45. M.... Y....

Oh yea, and some friends to

  46. M.... Y....

WOW! Really powerful, i have grandparents, greatgrandparents, couple of uncles that served, and a bro that was in marines, much love to all vets, but i wanna know, when the fuck is this wars gonna be over, our vets did so much for sooo long !?

    Shared, memorial day 2017.
The last just war the US fought was WWII.

  58. T.... V....

As a war veteran, this video is insanely hard to watch but combined with the song, it is one of the most powerful and direct anti war anthems I have heard. Their entire debut album was gold.

  59. T.... M....

I went in 04' USS George Washington, VFA 81 we saw shit and shot some fuckers even off shore. Its hard to justify peace when the people you're trying to help are shooting at you.

  60. d.... d....

draft started in the 1960s and parents sent their kids up to Canada because they didn't want their kids to go to veitnam

  61. T.... ....

This song got me through a lot in my 2 tours. It's stunning how much these people are like us. They just believe that their world is correct, just like we do. It's stunning that it pretty much comes down to who has the bigger gun.

  62. N.... N....

They should play this at the next Berkeley protest. Might pull a few heads out of some asses.

  63. J.... O....

War doesn't decide who's right. Only who is left. Nobody actually ever wins war. It leaves terrible and atrocious desolation in its wake. The misery and horror stain the souls of those not responsible for war. Then it festers, like an infection, worming its way into the children's hearts. Seeding vengeance and hatred. Then... it turns into another war. War perpetuates war. The birth of war is the same as it's consequences. Nobody who goes to war ever leaves the same. Whether you go home breathing or in a box. War is the antithesis of life. End of story.
War will never be in my name.

  64. D.... E....

    Such a great song !!! #SES4life <3

  65. G.... ....

Music is, by it's very nature, open to interpretation. If you think it's a pro-war song then it is a pro-war song. If you think it is an anti-war song then it is an anti-war song. If you think that it is definitively one thing or the other and anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong then you are an asshole who is missing the whole fucking point.

  66. K.... P....

    Great compilation

  67. J.... R....

unless you are Soldier or veteran or attempted to be a part of a military you have no room to talk back or say anything unless you know firsthand what they go through

moral of the story: we should nuke more bad people...

  69. I.... L....

The soldier's duty is to kill for his country, unfortunately.

  70. X.... ....

I realize American men have watched subscribed and liked this video and died in the line of duty for our Great Nation. God please allow them all free passage to Heaven for eternity! I cannot wait to meet them! Thank you American Armed Forces!

  71. L.... B....

This video hits me very hard. I am a combat veteran who now advocates for peace. I took part in the bloodiest battle of the Iraq war, Fallujah 2004. My heart broke in that place, though it took me years to realize it.

    L.... B....

This hits me hard to Brother but somehow it explains my feelings perfect.

    Brandon Gibbs
Completely agree. The fact that we think we are better, makes us worse. . .

  79. 3.... ....

Best war song ever. I've noticed that there are two kinds of veterans - some of them hate war so much, that they avoid everything what reminds them of it even articles or tv reports. Others love it and can never leave it behind - it's always in them, till they die.

    3.... ....

Chris Kyle was the second type. My great uncle was drafted in the Vietnam war and hates it.

    3.... ....

    Im that second type...

    3.... ....

I'm caught somewhere in the middle.

    3.... ....

Well I think the best WAR SONG is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83cZ9h5NAo8

  80. T.... A....

most people seem to think this song is either anti- or pro- war. But I think it is like most of the best "war" songs, i think it could (and should) be seen as either, or both (i.e "fortunate son" and "born in the usa")

  81. s.... ....

What this song means to me, is that a person is many things. Father, son, soldier. Fight for what's right. And if you do stupid shit, you deserve to die. Period. I have been on 3 combat tours. Not once have I said what I did over there was for country. But for the men/women next to me. Interpret this song how you want, but at the end of the day. Freedom isn't free.

    s.... ....

Freedom isn't free and it is being taken away very slowly day by day until Martial Law is declared then our freedoms will no longer exist as long as Martial Law is in effect. I am gonna predict this will take place right before a new president is voted in. As long as Martial Law is effect then the president leaves the seat but is still president. Scary part is if this happens and Martial Law remains in effect then Obama might as well call himself King.

  82. P.... M....

amazing that a bunch of ballsacks think this is pro-war! demonstrates that your education wasn't what you thought it was - wise up - you're being exploited.

    P.... M....

  84. D.... M....

Eh. Kill or be killed. Once you are behind the wire no one gives a shit about politics or opinions.

    D.... M....

but everyone should give a shit about politics and opinions when you see non-sense happening. There is no pride in being a soldier - it's just being dumb. Enrolling in the army by definition means high risk of fucking up your life, not to mention it also implies killing innocent people pretty often.

    D.... M....

+Provehito in Altum That's okay with me.

    @CatsAndCoffee17
Wow, not sure how I didn't assume that, haha. It sounded like some military term or something.

  88. N.... F....

11 years later, I am still glad I joined the military. I know this song is supposed to be sarcastic but this is what we do, and you either love it or get on the sidelines and watch.

  89. J.... c....

9-11 was Saudi Arabia funded wahabi. Which is funded by the us. So Why are we blowing up every other country, except Saudi Arabia?

  90. J.... c....

If terrorist thought September 11 would be the US to there knees.. guess again.. look whose running like pussies and hiding behind the innocence

    J.... c....

    +John capotosto
Bin Ladin didn't think 9/11 would cripple the United States of America, you fucking idiot. He wanted America to come to the Middle East where they wage Jihad on their own turf. You low-level military meatheads are so fucking stupid.

    J.... c....

    +John capotosto
I don't hate people that join the military, just their overall ignorance. (On average.)

It is clear that you do not know the history of the middle eastern conflict. Yes, 9/11 was about sending a message, not about crippling America.

Because I say that you're wrong, you call me a liberal loving terrorist? Yes, I am definitely liberal, and not just that, I would classify myself as a progressive liberal. That doesn't mean that I condone acts of terror, nor does that mean that I am against the acts of war neccassary to take out terrorists responsible for the deaths of innocent people.

With that being said, you're fucking dumb.

    J.... c....

Well you came at me strong and I don't know you so we do know each other so you do judge people.. your the dumbass... cursing and think you under stand.. he did think he would bring us to our knees because he had other Intel about the banks were doing with financial about giving shit out... it's just amazing that he knew the time to hit the two buildings that had financial ties to everything.. and the economics in america is the strong point.. so he went after that.

    J.... c....

John capotosto if you think that attack was by his hands...good lord. Inside job buddy, get the fuck over it. Quit crying so we can fix this fucking country. Both of you, quit this "side" bullshit. We are both human, yes? LETS LEAVE IT AT THAT.

  91. N.... ....

What i gather from the song is a person who conforms to society and to be what society expects him to be but when the Government wants something he does it. He goes and violates the life of others under the justification of "Patriotism". He goes to church and work with a dress code furthering his Golden Chains. He has become the ownership of the public good and thus has no real choice in what to do with his life. And he suffers the consequences of doing what the State says. It also sees that Television, Marketing and how companies capitalize on Patriotism , almost to an effect of bad intentions. The man depicted had predispositions as what to expect. He saw the movies and tv shows. He saw how patriotic those people were, but what the man doesnt get is the consequences of killing people. And in not understanding that he harms himself even further. And to an effect this video is for people blindly doing what others tell them and what society says to do. Conformity combined with lies that are told to you so you fight for the State. You do have to remember, those who join the military do so for many reason but almost all of them are never told the full story of whats going on. Its that way for a reason. If you knew what was going on in the world before you joined the military, would you still join? I did 5 years myself and i did deploy as an Infantry man in a combat zone during the 2007-2009 Surge in Sadr City. I joined for one reason. I need to know information about what was really going on. So what did i do? I played the game for what it is, i conformed to that culture and people bought it. Nobody really noticed me using the Iraqi interpreter asking a few honest questions. Nobody cared. Nobody minded that i bothered to learn the Customs and Courtesies in that region or new some Arabic. As a student of history i know ignoring Customs and Courtesies can be very insulting. Thus dangerous. So i joined for information and once i was exposed to the State i can now formulate my own opinions today about how the State is destructive simply by existing. Because i joined i found out some information about what we infantry guys should not have known. Foreign Policy, Natural Resources, Psy Ops programs. I was not supposed to know this. The State does not want you to think, it wants you to obey and if you think, then you might formulate some ideas of not listening. This is what this song is about in the larger scheme of things. It speaks to me because people blindly joining thinking its all roses until they have to make hard decisions then your suffering truly begins. Now you can decipher the lies the State tells in order to make War feasible. Many illusions and half truths out there by the State. Once you see them for what the State is only then can you start to make rational decisions on the future in regards to this monster called the State. The Man depicted in the video harbors a strong hatred towards the State since they lied to him. And rightfully so, they used him for immoral purposes and he wasnt even aware of it. When you can enslave a person and the slave protects the Master then you know Propaganda has truly won. When the slaves want more enslavement then you know.
