Smashing Pumpkins - To Forgive Lyrics

Ten times removed
I forget about where it all began
Bastard son of a bastard son of
A wild eyed child of the sun
And right as rain, I'm not the same but
I feel the same, I feel nothing
Holding back the fool again
Holding back the fool pretends
I forget to forget nothing is important
Holding back the fool again
I sensed my loss
Before I even learned to talk
And I remember my birthdays
Empty party afternoons won't come back
Holding back the fool again
Holding back the fool pretends
I forget to forget nothing is important
Holding back the fool again
I forget to forget me
I forget to forget you see
Nothing is important to me
I knew my loss
Before I even learned to speak
And all along, I knew it was wrong
But I played along, with my birthday song
Holding back the fool again
Holding back the fool pretends
I forget to forget nothing is important
Holding back the fool again

  3. B.... O....

This song has a total Gish vibe to it. One of the best cuts on CD 1

chills every time, when i hear this album i feel a lot, i felt asleep when i was a kid to this album i remember so clearly my cd player the emotions that i felt by sleeping to this. I remember i didn't want this album to end because i wanted to stop time and fix my life my childhood.

For those that don't know....... If this song is played in a car with a sound system with sub woofers- it produces much more and deeper bass than you would hear in most rap songs. This song could easily help you win a bass competition. Forget the fact that this is an all around great song; it hits hard.....

  6. Q.... ....

🎶I sensed my loss before i even learned to speak.... and all along i knew it was wrong... but I played along...🎶

  12. A.... ....

How can you make those notes tremble like in 0:07 - 0:09 ?

    A.... ....

Maybe an e-bow? James Iha was already using it around this time, think he might have done some background guitar with it in this song

  13. D.... ....

Thank you entirely for uploading! This song has always spoken to a painful place in my heart. Beautiful and timeless❤

    D.... ....

    You and all of us

    D.... ....

It truly is. I'm 40 and actually bought this when it came out and I just played To Forgive for a 23 yr old girl co worker of mine who had never heard it and she was pretty much like, o.k , that's a truly beautiful song. Sad but beautiful, and like you said timeless.

  14. S.... ....

A birthday song, with love from Scotland, wrapped up warm in a French-Canadian blanket, eating rainbow unicorn cookies :-)

  15. D.... F....

I wanna die to this song

    D.... F....

If this song is the last song I ever hear, then I’ve died happy

This song talks to me in so many ways... my goodness

  23. B.... T....

    That organ man!

  24. K.... L....

The fool withheld from the most cherished one...

  25. C.... S....

Alot of people don't actually think that this is one of the greatest double albums ever released not to mention SP sound can never be duplicated. My opinion it's in the Top 5 ever released... It's truly a timeless masterpiece

    C.... S....

Couldn't agree with you more on absolutely everything you said. I just know these 2 discs stayed in my multi changer CD player for a very, very long time

    C.... S....

I brought this album on double cassette tape back in 1996. This song is a standout in a magnificent album.

  26. A.... ....

    I forget to forget me
I forget to forget you see
    Nothing is important to me

  27. L.... G....

Sometimes I forget how truly great this band is..

    L.... G....

    I forgive you

    L.... G....

@thisistheguy good. I needed forgiveness. I'm alright now.

    L.... G....

    you have to forgive

    L.... G....

I'm 40 so I really don't. They're 1st full album Gish is 1 of the all time heavy alt/rock albums of all time. Other than a few brilliant bands from Seattle, Smashing Pumpkins is 1 of the only other bands to play alternative music heavy, that being said though, this is their best album and To Forgive is definitely 1 of my favorite songs on it. Billy Corgan was and still is a musical genius right up there with Cobain and Reznor.

    L.... G....

Dont forget them. They were a miracle

  28. M.... G....

the part about 2:40 - amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I love it very much!

    M.... G....

    Marcela Gogolová agreed

  29. S.... ....

    Masterpiece

  30. D.... ....

Damn right there isnt any dislikes

what's the genre of artwork depicted in the backdrop? Like "Tonight, Tonight" paying homage to "Le Voyage dans la lune" - 1902, the artwork feels like something from that particular era, but what's the genre? It definitly has an affiliation with old children's story books; As a particular example, I own a Cole's funny book from way back in my childhood and it's filled with these kinds of illustrations - but what is it?

    e.... ....

I would love to know this too! It also reminds of the film James and the Giant Peach, somehow. Late 19th, early 20th century obviously, with all the space/science/flying machine paraphernalia. Related somehow to cut-out animation/puppets perhaps? Magic realism maybe? I don't know what I'm talking about really. Gorgeous song anyway Pumpkins :)

@evilslig I took several Art history classes in college, and to me it's like if Hieronymus Bosch made paintings in the Rococo style, then added Pop culture collages to it in the manner of Winston Smith.
