The song you chose to remove was "By Starlight"??? Man, to each their own, but that is one of my all time favorite Pumpkins tracks! And I consider them my favorite group! Also, it is just so damn hard to envision this album any other way than the version we all know and love, but fun to consider. I really think Aeroplane Flies High fits so well in the box set. Take the top 12-14 tracks off the box set and make an album...similar to Pieces Iscariot (which is a damn masterpiece and they were all leftover tracks as well!)

Great song, reminds me of The Police and Sting

I come back to this song sometimes. I think it maybe my favorite song by them. I find it comforting when I feel myself slipping. I'm glad it exists.

Billy was mad to cut this from Melon Collie. It's one of his best tunes. Imagine if they had this on the album and released it as a single. It would have been massive. So much 90's angst and despair.

Rust T this was recorded on the mellon collie tour and included on the thirty-three single a year after the album was released.

I had no idea this was supposed to be on Melon Collie. Hearing this song takes me back to my days as a college radio DJ. We had a restricted release CD in the station library (a 12-song variant of "The Aeroplane Flies High Sampler") that had this song on it. A fun perk of DJing was that I used to sneak CDs back home with me between my sets, rip them, then return them ;)

@Nathan Branson It probably didn't really fit with the flow. I personally can't really think of a good place to insert it; it feels more natural as a B-side, even if it is lengthy.

@loki352 Generally, I think the original post summed it up best. It needed to be on this album because it is better than 75% of the songs on the album and could have got more attention. But if I had to place it somewhere, I would have put it before or after before "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans."

Nathan Branson Fair. I think it didn’t fit anywhere in the track listing, but I’m certain it could have worked. I agree with your placement— it kind of feels like an alternate version of Muzzle that combines itself with Porcelina. Also could have worked where Tales of a Scorched Earth is.

I know the Thirty-Three single was released after the album, but I can’t find any information on when Aeroplane was recorded (though I haven’t looked too hard). I hear some people saying it was recorded and finished after the album, since it was a B-side to Thirty-Three. The fact that a snippet of it can be found in the Pastichio Medley, which was released in April 1996, makes me feel like that’s probably true. I feel like it wouldn’t have been included in there if they already had a song completed using the riff at the time.

I listened to this song every day after my wife left and those lines cut the most.

I always thought of this song as a very dark, sardonic parody of Billy's own narcissistic self-loathing. Those tape recorded parts, especially the way his voice has been altered to add extra emphasis to the embarrassingly unimaginative angst of "I've always been afraid to die, but I think I'm more afraid to live," really drives that point home for me.
The sound reminds me of Abby Road era John Lennon, if he had composed in that style in the 90s.
